I really like this pub and feel like the "grubbiness" is part of the charm of the place. Have been going here a few years and the staff have always been pleasant and good humored if somewhat pressured by it being very busy which it seems to becoming more over the years. I try to avoid weekends because of this.
If only they had fewer people it would be much nicer for those of us who have always enjoyed visiting.

Now the best pub in Highgate after the awful changes made to the nearby Red Lion and Sun. Can only hope this pub does not go the same way!

Spaniards Inn, Hampstead Heath
Besides having some of the slowest bar staff in the history of the world they also seem to just NOT CARE.
I witnessed staff taking cutlery wrapped in toilet roll out to customers, and then the staff looking shocked when the customers complained1

The Stag, Belsize Park
The service is reasonably fast unlike some of the other pubs in the area. The food always looks good but am yet to try it. The garden is the place to be on a summers day. If you are lucky you may even get a booth with protection from random rain showers.
