Sadly, the menu appears to have been changed - it's no longer the Roebuck's own, it's exactly the same as in every other pub owned by this chain. While that's not as bad as it could be, it's a bit disappointing - first sign that the lovely independent atmosphere might be crumpling under pressure from above.
Still worth a visit for the view.

Beautiful old building, with high ceilings and snug booths down the main hall - and a great big coal fire. It was packed to the rafters with Christmas cheer on my visit, so we ended up hovering at the edges, but still a good atmosphere - and the crowds did thin out over the evening, so if you're in for the long haul chances are you may get a seat regardless.
Sam Smith's always a matter of personal taste - I like Ayinger, and at these prices it is hard to argue with, but if you don't like the range - don't go to a SS pub.

The Jerusalem Tavern, Clerkenwell
This cracking little pub is rapidly becoming a victim of its own popularity, bursting at the seams nightly (and at lunchtime) as the word spreads. Nonetheless, if you can make it in early and grab a table it's still a fabulous local.
The atmosphere is friendly and sociable (expect to share your table and possibly actually talk to the strangers at the other end) and the beer is divine. Food is lunchtime only, but excellent - I've never had to wait more than 20 minutes, even over the super-busy Christmas period.
Also serves the delicious Fentiman's bottled soft drinks as an alternative to the usual fizz.

The Duke of Cambridge, Battersea
We ventured here as a last resort (in search of a local pub not jam-packed already on account of the rugby!), but were pleasantly surprised. Not having much affection for Youngs in general, we found this pub very comfortable, very relaxed and the staff friendly (if a little slow at the bar). The food was a decent Sunday roast, with good crunchy vegetables and tasty cuts of meat. Slightly overpriced, but enjoyable.
