The Kings Head and Bell, Abingdon

I don;t know where this rumour about a wine bar keeps coming from.

It is owned by Foundation Inns who are currently doing the construction work to reopen this autumn or early next year. The planning permission is easily viewable at the district council web site, which clearly show it is still going to be a pub.

I contacted Foundation Inns to find out what it is going on and they said "Cask ales will be part of the offer along with a good selection of other product ranges and we will be introducing a good food offering at reasonable prices."

Nags Head On The Thames, Abingdon

This pub has improved a lot during the year. It now has 4 real ales that change frequently (good enough for the local Camra group to hold its branch meeting there recently). It has a reasonably priced food menu. The beer garden on the island has had new furniture. The interior seems cleaner with several separate areas including a tropical fish tank in the dining area. It does still have TV screens but they are not as loud and intrusive as before. You really need to ignore any reviews from before 2009.

The Old Anchor Inn, Abingdon

Well served beer. Stock whatever guest beers Green King will allow. Enjoyed Abbot Reserve.

The Stocks Bar (Crown and Thistle Hotel), Abingdon

Excellent. Good choice of 4 real ales (if a bit cold at the moment). Friendly bar staff. Good bar food. My favorite pub in Abingdon at the moment.

Prince of Wales, Shippon

Good quality beer... had several real ales on including Timothy Tayler's landlord, Wood's Pot of Gold, Black Sheep bitter, Deuchars IPA.

I was surprised because from the outside it looks like a Greene King pub which is why I hadn't bothered to go in before (Almost every pub in Abingdon and surrounding area is Greene King).

Has a pleasant beer garden out the front. Interior is in 2 sections. Has a pool table.

The North Star, Steventon

Good selection of real ales. Also one of the few places to get a pint of Perry. Friendly locals and a 3-legged neighbourhood cat. Instead of a normal "bar" with hand pumps, the beer is served from a room directly from the barrels. It is like stepping back in time a century or two. Quite low ceilings, so not good for tall people!
