The Thatchers Arms, Mount Bures

Hmm. I've got mixed feelinges for this pub. The trouble is, I rememer how it used to be - anyone out there who remembers the days of Gerald and Connie will know what I'm on about. The interior is a bit 1970's bungalow, but to be fair it is clean and tidy.
The views are excellent, and it's worth visiting for this alone. Oddly enough, the pub nearly didn't survive WW2, as a US Thunderbolt crashed nearby, missing the pub by about 75 yards. Also, visit the Norman Motte next to the church - no explanations - just do it.
I can't comment on the food, but on the few occasions we've been there it looks pretty good. I've had a mix of service from blooming excellent, to disinterested. I don't know, suck it and see I suppose. Maybe I visited on an off day.

The Bull, Braintree

I agree totally, even tho' the post is over a year old. You should always avoid Braintree town centre on a Friday/Saturday night anyhow, unless you have a black belt in Origami. They breed them hard in Braindead, especially if there are at least 20 of them in a pack.
However, the best pub in Braintree town centre is probably the Waggon & Horses in South Street - at least you won't get you teeth kicked in and the toilets are presentable. Tom, the Landlord, is a laugh and you always get a decent pint, even if it's Greedy King. Well worth the (short) walk, and you do get to avoid the Braintree dickheads/Dss/scroungers/single mums/drug dealers etc.
Also, a good place to take the wife/mistress/partner, and it's got quite a nice beer garden. And it's handy for Tesco's.
I've given the Bull one a point, 'cos it has a toilet. Or is it a toilet?

Barracuda, Braintree

Jay28 is spot on with his assessment.
Not one to spend time in unless you are waiting for a bus in the rain, or you are aged about 14.

The Bull Hotel, Halstead

Used to use this one a lot, but got fed up with plasma screens on each wall playing footie/music at full blast even with no one watching. This is a 16th century coaching in for gods sake. If you like your beer, go to the Dog.
Nice garden though.

The Speaker, Westminster

All true. But beware - The Conservative HQ is just round the corner, and this is the heart of Civil Service land so the pub is usually full of suits.
The homemade doorstop sandwiches are excellent too, they make them up in front of you, using fresh uncut bread.
Certainly one of the best for this part of London.

The Angel, Sudbury

Currently being refurbished - it needed it!

The Black Boy Hotel, Sudbury

Er, not so - The Black Boy faces the Market Place in the centre of town - the Brewery Tap is another pub in East Street.
The Black Boy is an ancient beamy coaching inn which has a good reputation for food. Two bars, the front being the public, the rear one more a lounge bar and dining room.
Certainly on of the better establishments in Sudbury.

The Dog Inn, Halstead

Well recommended. All the other comments are spot on. It also has a nice sunken garden at the back with a petanque pitch and views over Halstead.
Beware the car park though, the pub is situated on a nasty blind bend and you tke your life in your hands trying to drive out. Better to park nearby and walk.

The Ship Inn, Burnham on Crouch

I'm afraid I don't agree with the last comment. This is the best pub in BoC, great food, excellent Landlord staff and a good mix of locals (all ages) and tourists. It doesn't matter that it's not on the riverside as you get a better type of customer here.
Sit out the front and just watch the world go by.
I just wish that I lived nearer.
