The Speaker, Westminster

I must admit that the sudden departure of David, the long standing (and smoking and drinking!) barman has come as bit of a shock to all of the regulars. The resons for his departure do seem to be unclear at the moment. (I do hope that Class52 (below) is wrong, and that the parting of the ways was amicably, and correctly, handled).

For all of his, sometimes, absent-mindedness David is a nice fellow - always friendly and helpful, and, from the customer pov, efficient He will be sore missed by his many friends in the pub and hopefully he will soon be "behind the ramp" in equally pleasant PH surroundings.

Joiners Arms, Gower

Very good boozer and the 3 SBC beers that I tried were all excellent.- particularly the "Three Cliffs". Food was also of a very good standard, and loads of it.

Just one gripe, also. I also tried a pint of Breconshire Gower's Well which was, in my view, "not ready" (a subjective thing I know) but when I tried to draw this to the attention of the barman he batted me away with a "it's fresh on!".

Given it a 7 but without the little misunderstanding would have probably marked it 9 - would hope to return when next in the area

As a regular in the Speaker I feel that I must take issue with Robin53 below.

The landlord is in fact one of the most friendly and outgoing I have encountered in 35 years of pubbing.

Wth regards the incident referred to (and I was present at the time): the disabled customer in question is patially sighted and as they were leaving the landlord, very kindly in my view, went to move an item of stray furniture from impeding her progress. There was certainly no attempt either deliberate, or accidental to knock her over and I think Dennis is slightly upset at this reference.

As Robin53 was also present, and seems from postings here to be at least a semi regular, perhaps we can discuss this further over a friendly pint or two - they will obviously know me

Have to take issue with the comment down below concerning the choice of ales in this pub. There are two ever changing, daily, guest ales (and that proves the popularity of the the place and the quality of beer). and if you see the same guest twice in the same month I'd be very surprised! They are always interesting, and quite often come from micros. You might not like all of them but that's down to taste - if we all liked the same thing we'd still be drinking Ben Truman or Grotney's RB.

Also, in response to another post, as a suit wearing "Deadhead" I object to being compartmentalised as a Tory! Don't judge a book by its cover as Mr Lydon said.

Further to my note below:

The pub has now undergone an extensive re-furb which has improved the use of space, improved the lighting and updated the furnishings.

4, ever changing, real ales and 1 cider are on the menu

A great boozer and well worth a visit if you are in the area.

The Station Arms, Southminster

An excellent village pub, with the emphasis on beer - no TV no, fruit machines.

Great selection (ever changing) of ales - both local and far flung brews. Superb regular festivals as well.

Sit and enjoy the banter between the Landlord and his regulars while supping a few

Well worth a day out but do check the opening times (Saturday's are particularly odd)

Vastly improved back street boozer - well done landlord!

The beer quality is tip-top and a good variety of (mainly) local brews are on offer. (And the Huffers are indeed excellent)

If visting the area put this on your "must visit" list.

The Royal Oak, Westminster

Great pub that the Young's pubco interior "design" team haven't got their rookers into.

Very friendly landlord who takes pride in both his pub and beer. Slightly off the beaten track but well worth a visit if you are in the area.

The Barley Mow, Westminster

I was quite getting to like this place for a swift lunchtime pint (they have a good selection) but then just before Christmas it went through a time warp to the 1970's.

On returning a pint which refused to clear the twenty-something barperson took a slug from my drink and informed me that "there is nothing wrong with that!" -haven't seen that sort of thing from bar staff for years. Couldn't be bothered to argue the point and left - won't go back.

The Buckingham Arms, Westminster

A once great pub ruined by a pubco (that's all Youngs is now) makeover.

What was an excellent ale house has had all the atmosphere and enjoyment ripped out of it in the name of pale pine modernisation.

Avoid

Since the sad down-grading of the Buckingham Arms in 2008 the Speaker is now, by far, the best "ale drinkers" pub in the area.

The guest beer policy is excellent; regular changes in the two guests and they are always served in top notch condition.

To just comment briefly on a recent review: The Landlord takes great pride in his pub, its beer and its environment: (It was unfortunate that he got caught out in Thailand during the recent travel problems and that certain standards fell between the cracks in his absence. If you were disappointed at that time - try again it's worth it.
