The Southampton Arms, Gospel Oak

The Southampton has just been voted CAMRA North London Pub of the Year. A richly deserved award, well done to all concerned.

The Southampton Arms, Gospel Oak

I drink a couple of times a week in the Southampton and haven't had a single flat beer over the past few months. The place has become very popular and can be a bit of a squeeze at times, but that's simply a function of the fact that it's a really excellent place for a pint. Keep up the good work.

Quinn's, Camden

I quite like Quinns; the atmosphere is good, nice mix of locals and Camden sorts and it's a decent place for a late night drink. That said, they have a problem with their beer. I go once a month or so and I'd estimate that on 4 or 5 visits out of the last 7, I've ordered a beer that has been completely off. As in tasting like Sarson's. Usually it's the St Edmunds. They seem to have a particularly problem with this and it's bloody annoying. I'm sick of having to take pints back.

The Southampton Arms, Gospel Oak

Annoyingly, this pub opened just after I moved away from the immediate area. But it's still only a twenty minute walk away for me and well worth the trip. On my first visit a few days ago, had 4 ales, including a very fine mild that for the life of me I can't remember the name of, all of which were excellent. Simple grub is available - didn't try it but looks pretty tasty. Good mix of people, decent prices and a generally excellent atmosphere. Was in on a Thursday and it was pretty busy. Hope it stays that way. Highly recommended.

The Pineapple, Kentish Town

The Pineapple is an enjoyable place for a pint. The interior is lovely, the beer decent and reasonably varied and the atmosphere excellent. Thai food is on offer, but I've never tried it.

The earlier comment about a League of Gentlemen "local pub for local people" is simply false. The pub provides a pretty representative snapshot of the people who live in Kentish Town; so you get skinny jeans wearing trendy sorts, to youngish professionals to older men and women. Not the inbred caricature suggested below.

The Old Fountain, Old Street

Rather unpreposessing from the outside and not massively exciting to look at on the inside (reminds me a bit of the look of a university bar - merely functional). However, there the negatives (if you can call the negatives) stop. The beer was excellent; I had a couple of pints of Slater's Supreme, a Crouch Vale Fine Pale Ale and Twickenham Autumn Blaze. Very pleasant. The bar staff were friendly and the pub has a nice, diverse, clientele. All in all, a hugely enjoyable evening. Will return.
