The Ship and Castle, Congresbury

Place is really given over to food with with most tables laid up with cutlery and wine glasses. Small not particularly comfortable area for non eaters. There is extensive seating outside if the weather is nice although near a very busy road

The King William, Bristol

Visited as part of a hectic pub crawl. You better like Sam Smiths, but this place still looks like a pub and you cant always say that in Bristol

The Connaught Arms, Fratton

In 1996 i lived about 30 secs away from this pub. Thats said I didnt go in that often but found it a civilized hostility. Cant comment on the truth or otherwise of EDL connections but it would be sad if it was true.

John Jacques, Portsmouth

Safe choice in this densely populated part of Portsmouth. Early on a Friday evening it was still quite busy. Minimal seating outside.

The Locomotive Inn, Exeter

An unglamorous place completed untouched by any modernization. Didnt feel entirely comfortable here.
On the plus side the pub they have a jukebox which can play every hit since 1952.
A man came in with a carrier bag of meat which quickly found some buyers. Um

The Passage House Inn, Topsham

Topsham one of my favourite places in Britain even if it is on the expensive side.
Great location with outdoor seating overlooking the river, but the weather was not being co-operative when I visited.
Inside is fairly compact with most space given over to eating. Dartmoor Jail Ale went down well

The King's Head, Wells

My favourite pub in Wells. The decor and architecture is interesting. Stone walls inside and at least part of the pub looks like it might have once been a chapel or similar. Cheddar Potholer and other cask ales, good quality.
Small courtyard at the back with patio heaters if needed and they definitely weren't on the evening i visted.
Eavesdropped on four young people talking about various musical shows they were involved in and tutoring at Eton. "He added an extra beat, can you believe it". I felt like I was from another culture but fair play to them

The Crown Hotel, Wells

Visited late afternoon on a recent scorching hot day. The pub has a small courtyard at the back and this was where most of the customers were.
Pub is an old hotel with connections to William Penn. Had a decent pint of St Austell Tribute.
The pub is like Wells, nothing wrong with the place but lacking in excitement. Dont get me wrong the Cathedral is magnificent, but come late afternoon when the coach parties have left and the shops and market have shut there are remarkable few people about, and this is the middle of the summer

The Crown Inn, Bridgwater

A real townies pub this one. Pool and darts being played as I popped in while waiting for my train.
The landlord was friendly and welcolming.Said it was one of only 2 real ale pubs in Bridgwater. Cant remember what I drunk, though.
The gents had the smallest sink I've ever seen. Couldnt get my hand underneath the tap and i've got small hands. Lots of carnival photos on the walls and this pub appears to be one of the main players

The Village Inn, Lynmouth

A great find on a Friday evening in Lynmouth. The Rising Sun looked uncomfortably full so I settled on this place.
A few locals enjoying a bit of friendly banter in the smallish front bar. I sat down at a table with a pint and several minutes later noticed a sleeping dog under the table! So letting sleeping dogs lie I tried to sit as quietly as possible.
The dogs appear to have a certain amount of fame here.
The side and back of the pub are laid on with tables for food. I had already eaten but the smell of someone's fish dish was very appetising.
Had a decent pint of Ansome. The landlord made a point of conversing.
Lynmouth is in a spectacular setting by the sea surrounded by steep wooded hills. Well worth a visit

The Bay Horse, Bristol

Not much to distinguise it from many similar city centre establishments. 10pm on a midweek evening and it was pretty quiet. Still better than waiting at the bus station

27 Jun 2013 11:44

The Saracens Head, Bath

Very quiet on a recent early evening visit with not a rugby fan in sight

27 Jun 2013 11:35

The Imperial, Weston Super Mare

Very much boarded up when I walked past yesterday.
You would someone would make a success of this place as its a decent sized boozer in a prime location.
I used to go in the Imperial a lot when in my late teens/early twenties, but thinking back if never my favourite

The Cabot Hotel, Weston Super Mare

Visited late afternoon, so a quiet time of day. A few people sat enjoying their pints on the adjacent lawns.
The pub is spread over several different levels and easy to get lost.
Had a pleasant enough real ale. Sadly forgot its name while watching some of the tennis.
This is still the old Cabot in my memory as it was the first pub i regularly frequented as a 17/18 yr old. It had something for everybody. Widely different bars. I miss the old basement area with its jukeboxes and pool tables and the children area which was really a hang out for goth types. Still times change

The Red Lion Hotel, Clovelly

Unbeatable location by the quay at Clovelly. Lots of interesting sepia photographs of Clovelly in bygone days. Strange to think that people live here all year round. That hill in the rain and snow cant be much fun. Local Clovelly ale not bad either

O'Neills, Bristol

Now known as Molloys and not noticeably Irish. Probably is unfair to review a bar on a Friday just before Christmas as it was hardly a typical evening.
The place was heaving. Served a quite disgusting pint of supposedly Caffreys at first. Stella was Ok. Had a bit of a dance to get into the Christmas party vibe

Ferry Boat Inn, Shaldon

Lovely beer garden overlooking the estuary. Inside of the pub rather gloomy. Ale fine

7 Sep 2010 17:52

The Llandoger, Bristol

Looks far nicer from the outside than it actually is inside, full of dark corners

Lloyds No.1, Bristol

There are worse things in life than being trapped here on a Friday evening just before Christmas , but not many. Gets absolutely rammed full despite the its size and the music is too loud for anything than shouting the odd word to your mates

15 Aug 2010 17:57

The Railway Inn, Meare

Pub apparently in the middle of nowhere although beautiful nature reserves nearby.
Very thirsty after some birdwatching and had nice pint of Worthingtons.
Gents are outdoors and are horrible. Generations of cobwebs on the walls

15 Aug 2010 17:31

Shooters, Weston Super Mare

Always a good place to watch the footie. Oddly linked to Cheers next door, you can walk from one to another at the back, and not a lot of difference between the two places

7 Aug 2010 19:54

The Britiannia Inn, Weston Super Mare

Was padlocked up when I walked past today

7 Aug 2010 19:49

The Flag, Weston Super Mare

This place has shut for years. It is now flats

7 Aug 2010 19:46

Off The Rails, Weston Super Mare

Very small bar area. Enjoyed a lovely pint of real ale while sheltering from torrential August showers.
Few of the customers appearred to be waiting to catch a train

23 Aug 2008 16:25

New Inn, Priddy

Visited this pub (17 June) in the midst of getting repeatedly lost walking the West Mendip Way.
Friendly, chatty landlord and had an excellent pint of Potholer.
Few customers but it was a weekday afternoon.

19 Jun 2008 10:44

The Cornubia, Bristol

Rather hidden away, you would never stumble across this place by accident. Decent food, plenty of tables outside for a sunny lunch time drink

18 Oct 2007 21:59

The Kings Arms, Oxford

I like this place. Large open room at the front, but some quieter nooks at the back with Uni lecturers doing crosswords etc. Plenty of interesting prints on the walls.
