Paul Hexter, an example to landlords everywhere. This is what a village pub should be. Seriously good range of beers (including Paul's own award-winning brews: Dr Hexter's Healer and Wedding Tackle), friendly atmosphere and eclectic (and eccentric) bunch of locals.
If they served food all the time it would definitely get a 10.

Lovely pub/restaurant/hotel in a great location. Food can be quite pricey and not always value for money, but it is great to eat in the gardens on a warm summer's evening. Service is quite slow, so if you're in a hurry find somewhere else for dinner as it can get quite busy.

The Five Horseshoes, Maidensgrove
Used to be my local. More of a gastro-pub but the food is excellent although slightly expensive, with a good range of drinks. The views over the Chilterns are superb and it's right in the middle of some great walks. Nice garden and occasional barbecues which are recommended. It's out of the way but worth the drive.

In my opinion, one of the best pubs in Berkshire. Lovely setting in the middle of a pretty village. Great atmosphere, good range of well kept ales and excellent food to suit all pockets - the chips are awesome. Friendly and efficient staff, great landlord and a nice, if basic, garden.
I wish I lived closer.

Broad Street Tavern, Wokingham
Good crowd and quite nice garden but expensive and mediocre food and pricey drinks. Commented that my food was not heated through properly and nothing was done about it. Manager can be extremely rude and foul-mouthed for no apparent reason as we witnessed recently. Not child friendly.
Rating would be much higher under new management.

The Shoulder of Mutton, Wantage
A proper old fashioned pub serving superbly kept ales. Interior has been updated since I was last there (which has slightly spoiled its circa 1950s look - but still frequented by some of the old locals I remember. Great atmosphere, friendly staff and good beers.
