Yes, service (or lack therof) is still the problem. Now made worse by off-duty staff being served first by those on duty - slowly, because of the mandatory banter. At peak evening time: Not good enough really.

Stonecoat thinks that the customers are odd and that when we bring our KFC's, kebabs and fish and chips into The Star - we should clean things up ourselves. I do not agree. Let those who work there do it...like my mum does at home. My mate, a regular here, is in hospital; she has curviture of the spine (its a VERY small pub) - even though she is also an elf.....

This pub has been so run down by a lazy/poor management that, I hear, Wetherspoons are having second thoughts. It seems very probable that the cost of bringing this place back to life will put potential investors off and that our village will just have the one pub.

'by far the best pub in the area?' The area being East Surrey (home to 100's of fine old country pubs) and only after a few months trading; NO way.
Effort is certainly being put in, but a lot - understandably - needs improving; expensive food (mediocre) and average beer is on offer.
The celebrity connection has impressed some, as have the contrived/inaccurate BITE ratings - putting the place as the No 1 pub in the UK !!
Rubbish - its not even the best pub in Shere.

The last poster understates this dreadful hovel - which is mainly caused by lazy/useless staff and the obvious absence of any management.

My frequent visits to Poole are because I have a mate and a boat there - and also because of the Nelson which seems loved by the tourists and hated by the inbreds. Beer quality and service is excellent and the music top class. If you chaps don't like the place, why go in ? Init.

Another great time at the Nelson tonight. There is no better pub in Dorset...init.
Fantastic music, beer and staff. We've already booked our Xmas party there!

Called into the Blue Anchor recently; there was nobody there, not even a barperson.
But, daytime TV was on! I don't think attitude/bottletop (the same) are helping their mates much...

Wiggy - welcome. Because of the vast amount of UEFA football coming up (with about 10 British teams) and the World Cup 2010 and qualifiers (with maybe 4 teams from these islands), the TV's are a good idea.
However, the Anchor's problem (and that of the Red Cross) is business failure - time after time, for years. The reason is primarily the very low calibre of staff and management because the premises and locations are prime in the area; the opposition is not exactly strong.
Indifferent and ever changing staff have been a feature and, having been served a pint earlier this week by a newly arrived Beckenham chap (it just might have been his first!), I have no reason to anticipate changes in the very quiet pre-Christmas months.

Fine Oxford centre pub with atmosphere and history - not least because of the activities of Morse and Lewis (the latter was filming nearby on our August visit). A very wide variety of beers and good food quality.
Just up the street from the Bodleian Library, it is probably Oxford's best - although its diminutive quaintness is a small problem!
In my view, Oxford is the ideal pub crawl venue. The contrast in pubs is unique - with little old wood panelled ones down laneways as well as a wide variety of the usual ones in the City's main commercial drag.

Its nearly a year since the last post and this pub has changed hands (and been closed) a couple of times since. Youngs bought it a few years ago and seem unable/unwilling to give it the capital injection required. The nearby Prince of Wales seems to attract the locals in this part of Dorking - even though it only does rolls.

Excellent town centre pub with friendly staff and regular music. Well kept beers - Harveys and Ringwood; the place does a blinding trade from shoppers and locals. At times, it becomes the Royal Mail social club!

Only Surrey pub with male strippers! Not a pretty sight....
