The Phoenix, Victoria

How can a pub with so many bar staff have such slow service?

12 Aug 2011 15:58

The Banker, Cannon Street

Nice pub, good beer and good food. Surely staff with little knowledge of how to run an English pub though.

The Black Lion, Hammersmith

Nice location, pleasant enough. But paid 7.40 for two pints of Doombar. Plenty of other nice pubs nearby which are more reasonably priced.

The Czech Bar, West Hampstead

Excllent place, nice to have proper Czech lager in an authentic environment. Wish they would turn the TV down however (which always seems to be showing some Czech soap opera).

The Anchor, Wisley

Nice location, good ales, a little pricey.

Didn't eat here - catering arrangements seemed a carbon carbon of many other similar places. Anyway, this is 'beer in the evening', not 'lunch at the weekend'...

The Phoenix, Victoria

Very busy, noisy, and expensive. But they do have a range of ales on normally, which (once topped up) are normally good.

The Brass Monkey, Victoria

Not a bad pub, they have two ales on, one is normally not yor normal London fodder - however they do seem to run out early. Small place, and busy in the evenings with after an work crowd, and the place is noisy, esp as they play music too loud.

The Bree Louise, Euston

The beer range is extensive, the quality superb - I can't think of many places to match it for this - perhaps the Wenlock or Magpie and Crown only. The place has been done up, but still feels a bit unloved, however some will think it gives it charm that the national pub chains can't emulate.

The Old Star, Westminster

Expensive, busy, yet the beer range is uninspiring - I have seen nothing as good as Pride on, it is Greene King IPA, Morland, Ruddles County and Abbot normally. These are ok, if they are really well kept. They are not really well kept. Go to the Speaker if you want decent ale!

The Bhurtpore Inn, Aston

I can only echo what has been said before. Perhaps the best pub I have been in the UK. When I was there, there was an ale festival on - with 60 ales and ciders. They seem to have about 10 hand pumps on normally with a range of interesting and unusual ales. An eight page listing of bottled ales and lagers, and a one page A4 listing of ciders. 100 whiskeys too. Expansive food menu, and the curries smelt lovely. No accommodation, but a B&B is recommended over the road. If I was being picky, the food seemed pricey, but I suspect it's about paying for quality.

The Hollybush Inn, Witney

Good for beer. Bad for ale.

The Eagle Tavern, Witney

Excellent pub. Brilliant ales, well kept.

Millstone Inn, Hathersage

There was a range of non-standard bitters on handpump, but they were a bit variable in quality. The menu is expansive, but the quality was only average. Location is good, but it is by a busy road. There is a complex arrangement for groups who wish to dine, whereby only four combinations of starters and mains can be ordered. There is also an additional 10% service charge for groups. I would recommend the Scotsmans' Pack in Hathersage as a better pub for food.

The Slug and Lettuce, Covent Garden

This place was the Rose and Springbok pub for a while, now it is The Marquee.

19 Feb 2008 09:34

The Bricklayers Arms, Putney

Four TT ales were on, and in good condition, when I visited, plus two other. Great place.

3 Jul 2007 12:15

Willow Walk, Victoria

A standard JDW. Service is a bit slow sometimes, and the eastern European bar staff come across as very unfriendly and impolite.

3 Jul 2007 12:12

The Harp, Covent Garden

Small, but perfectly formed.

9 Jun 2007 11:22

The Freemasons Arms, Covent Garden

Nice pub, ales have alway been good when I have been. Male staff excellent, (younger) female staff don't know how to pour a pint or what good customer service is.

8 Jun 2007 13:47

Prince Of Wales, Covent Garden

Basic pub, good range of ale in reasonable condition. Somewhat noisy, don't think that the background music was really necessary.

8 Jun 2007 13:41

Royal Oak, Lewes

Popped in on Sunday, nice enough place (wasn't drinking the ale, so can't comment), however the Sunday roast (chicken) was one of the nicest I have ever had!

26 Feb 2007 13:53

The Land of Liberty, Peace and Plenty, Heronsgate

Popped in for a couple of pints on a Sunday afternoon. Two excellent ales from a very good selection of bitters and proper lagers. Friendly and interested staff. Open fire, no TV or music. Perfect - worth the trip.

21 Jan 2007 23:58

The Bavarian Beerhouse, Shoreditch

Good range of lagers, but way overpriced. Somewhat empty when I was there (Sunday evening) and a little tacky, not sure the Ikea uplighters are original Germanic fittings...

6 Jun 2006 09:31

All Bar One, Marylebone

Standard All Bar One. Not very exciting. Was there on Friday early evening - no bitter, no Guinness, and two other beers on tap were off. Bit poor really.

11 Mar 2006 20:02

The White Cross, Richmond

Nice pub - good beer and food, a tad expensive but not outrageous. Beware the landlord, but we found the landlady at the food counter just as bad!

27 Feb 2006 10:02

The Boathouse, Putney

Beer was in good order when I visited last night, not so cheap though. Was a bit surprised when, asking for my pint to be topped up, I was asked how long ago the beer had been poured, and when I pressed the barman he said what he meant was 'have you drunk any of it?'. Bar staff reading magazines rather than serving, and seemingly not understanding the order in which to serve people waiting at the bar, all add up to pretty poor experience.

20 Feb 2006 11:15

The Red Lion, Mayfair

Very nice 'country' pub. Good range of some of the best kept beers I've had in London. Little bit busy with suits and tourists, but friendly enough atmosphere.

30 Jan 2006 14:37

The Hole In The Wall, Waterloo

Good range of ales, most of them in good nick. Bit of an experience, generally worth a visit. Seriously mardy landlord when I was there last who virtually through us out on the dot of closing.

1 Dec 2005 16:06

Spaniards Inn, Hampstead Heath

Stood at the bar for 15 mins on Sunday, trying to get served, not even eye contact from any of the staff. Avoid!

17 Oct 2005 21:47

The Doric Arch, Euston

Standard and range of ales seems still be good. Only thing to have really suffered is the good range of bottled beers that they use to have - and now no longer have.

23 Aug 2005 10:29

The Falkland Arms, Great Tew

Perfect perfect perfect!

22 Aug 2005 11:41

The Countryman, Brighstone

Good ales, welcoming and friendly pub, nice atmosphere.

22 Aug 2005 09:58

The Three Bishops, Brighstone

Mediocre pub, a couple of real ales, very much a locals pub

22 Aug 2005 09:57

The White Horse, Whitwell

Very nice food (but a little too much like a restaurant) and well kept ales. Would benefit from opening during the day (at least during holidays and weekends) as it was really busy as soon as it opened at 6:00pm.

22 Aug 2005 09:53

The Castle, Cambridge

Nice pub, sympathetically done up, with a good range of well kept ales on tap, and an interesting selection of food. Non-existent ringing of the time bell to signal the mid-afternoon closing of the pub caused the bar staff to become rather impatient when we understandably didn't leave immediately. Bar staff generally gave the impression that they wanted to be somewhere else which is coincidentally where I will be next time I fancy a pint.

15 Aug 2005 10:22

The Magpie and Crown, Brentford

An excellent traditional pub with superb beer! Perhaps the worst toilets in West London, and the extensive use of low energy light bulbs doesnt lend themselves to a cosy atmosphere, but what a cracking pint!
