The Angel and Crown, Richmond

I used to be a regular here in the 1980s, the best pub in Richmond then. Doesn't quite have the same atmosphere these days, but still a good place. One of the very attractive barmaids in the 80s was Suzy Lamplugh who was murdered when she was working as an estate agent

The Bear Tavern, Smethwick

Decent place. Nice mix of customers , young and old, good buzz about the place

The Midland, Bearwood

Very much a middle aged male pub, with a smattering of Camra types with beards and beer bellys. No music or TV, but a very wide ranging choice of beers. The Bear, a few doors away, has a much better mix of customers.

Dogma, Nottingham

More like wine bar than pub . they even give you your change on a plate as if expecting a tip. However it has been shut for months due to a stabbing

The Orange Tree, Nottingham

It is a little on the expensive side, but a very pleasant pub. One thing is that the bar staff are allowed to wear their own clothes rather than being dressed in drab all black outfits which seem to be the norm in almost every pub I have been to recently

The Golden Slipper, York

Small Tardis type pub, which has three bars in a tiny space including a library bar. Excellent pint of Tim Taylor's and a good curry for less than 10. Very close to the Minster. So many pubs around there I'll have to make another visit to check the rest of them out.

Coopers, York

Most pubs attached to or nearby stations attract a " dosser" type of customer, like Nottingham , Birmingham or St. Pancras. This was a pleasant surprise. Very smart place, and friendly bar staff. Well worth a visit while waiting for a train.

The Merry Widows, Derby

Small old fashioned pub opposite the station. some great pictures of old Derby footballers like Steve Bloomer , Raich Carter and Leon Leuty. Good pint, and worth a visit unlike the pub next door

The Quorn, Nottingham

I used to live a few doors away when it really was a dive, but has changed its name and looks a better place. However a lad got shot dead in the car park last week, so this may affect its popularity.

The Waterfront, Nottingham

Very modern looking place but very few seats and this is another pub with inaccessable toilets. I can only assume that hedge fund managers get a discount on the privet parties.

Canal House, Nottingham

Very gloomy pub with little natural lighting, even at lunchtime it had the feel of a night club about it. One massive anti is that the gents are fully four flights of steel , dimly lit stairs away.Plenty of good ale , but also plenty of better pubs nearby.

The Cross Keys, Nottingham

They've done a fantastic job with the decor and they have a good choice of real ales at decent prices. Just far enough away from the city centre to deter the riff raff, so well recommended.

Joseph Else, Nottingham

One of the worst Wetherspoons pubs around. Ok for cheap beer but the chances of getting served are nil. Large dosser element in evidence.

The Newshouse, Nottingham

Rather surprised that this place has become Nottingham's Camra Pub of the Year, though Camra do tend to judge pubs purely by the ale they sell and ignore any other considerations.

Although in the City centre it is just too far away from the shops etc to attract much passing trade and is therefore not very busy, at least not at lunchtime or in the early evening. It is normally just two old men in there staring into their pints and not the most welcoming atmosphere. Rather grim decor.

Beer is fine as you would expect, but I recommend the Fellows ( about 200m on the same road) for more pleasant surroundings

Langtry's, Nottingham

Traditional pub, hasn't changed for years. Usually very busy but sevice good. A decent selection of real ales. A big mixture of clientele, old , young and male and female. Not the sort of place for 18 year olds though which can only be a good thing. Highly recommended

The Plainsman, Mapperley

A truly astonishing makeover. The place is totally unrecognisable from it's previous days. I have been going in here since about 1972, though not as a regular, but more often since I moved nearby 2 years ago.

It used to be a mainly pensioners pub , but with a public bar for the younger element. It is now much larger, well furnished and attracts a wider range of punters. They have also taken the wise step of having both Sky Sport on as well as live bands. The two pubs next door ( Woodthorpe Top and Bread and Bitter) are both ' silent' .

It was very busy at 3 in the afternoon whereas previously I doubt whether you would get two people in there at that time.

We now have three excellent pubs all within a two minute walk from me.Just a year ago we only had this one which was then a pretty boring place.

Mapperley is now attracting hundreds of new visitors, just to go on a pub crawl .

The Woodthorpe Top, Nottingham

This is a very new pub, and there are now three pubs all next to each other in a suburban area ( The Plainsman will be reopening shortly). I doubt whether all will survive.

This place seems to be very popular, at least 50 people in there at 12.30, the other two pubs at that time would be lucky to get more than half a dozen at that time of day. They have done an excellent refurbishment job.

As with all Wetherspoons pubs it does attract the 'dosser' element due to the cheap prices. A chap told me that he was a 10 pint a day man and was now able to afford a taxi home as he saved 5 a day!

However most people in there were very respectable and there was a good atmosphere in there. Service good and a good choice of ales.Recommended

Hog's Head, Nottingham

I'm surprised that there are so few comments as this must be one of the most popular pubs in Nottingham. Not my sort of place later in the evening but busy earlier on with an age mixture. Large TV screens for football etc.

Sometimes have a problem getting served but usually fine. Good food , though a limited choice of beers.

All in all one of the city centre's best pubs.

Lord Rosebery, Scarborough

Very grand looking pub opposite the station, with a large selection of real ales.

However, I endorse the other comments about the service. It really was a farce in there where they had one barman trying to serve about six people whilst other members of staff strolled about collecting and cleaning glasses.

I have noticed this staffing problem in other Wetherspoons pubs and they ought to do something about it.

Larwood & Voce Tavern, Trent Bridge

Amazed at some of the comments. I had no idea this was a chav's place. I've only been there during the day when attending the cricket at Trent Bridge during the summer. Always thought it a really decent place. I'll be interested to see what it's like after the makeover. Very amused at the Yummy Mummy remarks , very true at the Casa across the river which seems to have closed, I imagine temporarily. The last time I was in there one of these women complained to the the management that I was smoking (OUTSIDE) because her precious Dominic or Nigella had a cold!!

The Bread and Bitter, Mapperley

New pub and a welcome addition to the area. Large selection of real ales which attracts a large (in more ways than one)number of real ale enthusiasts. This may change in due course but it is very much a male environment. There seems to be a lack of comfortable seating, most of the space being taken over by restaurant type seating. The food is excellent though. I would have thought that a new pub should have made more provision for smokers. There is plenty of space outside for a covered patio area and it is a great pity that this has not been done. On the whole though I like the place, friendly staff, and good service.

The Horn in Hand, Nottingham

Only recently discovered this place, a nice surprise. Excellent atmosphere, friendly (and fit) staff.

11 Feb 2008 10:40

The Rose of England, Nottingham

This Pub certainly attracts some of the dregs of society. Marginal improvement in the evening but a place to be avoided.

11 Feb 2008 10:35

The Orange Tree, Nottingham

An excellent pub. Good beers and pleasant surroundings and a nice outside area. Plenty of students but seem to be the more sensible type. Certainly a better place than the nearby Newcastle which seems to lost it recently only partly due to the smoking ban.

Cape, Nottingham

I wonder whether the reviews were posted by employees of the Cape.Nothing wrong with the place although some of the staff seem a bit surly (not the girls). Decor is very good

The Anglesea Arms, Chelsea

I suggest Zagreb uses a spell checker himself before he mocks others. This pub is known for good beer and efficient (Zagreb please note) service.

The Southbank Bar, West Bridgford

Just the sort of pub I like. Fairly busy, lots of Sky TV screens. Does not seem to attract some of the more dubious characters that frequent the Trent Bridge Inn nearby. My only criticism is the fact that one is not allowed to drink outside during the day due to some jobsworths bye-law.

10 Aug 2007 12:44

The Two Brewers, Covent Garden

I used to go here a few years back when there was an eccentric landlord who was keen on slapping (female) customers on the behind. There used to be lots of women in there but when I visited recently it was full of theatrical men and a bit off-putting.

31 Jul 2007 12:08

Fellows Morton & Clayton Ltd, Nottingham

One of those rare CAMRA recommended pubs that has a good atmosphere as opposed to to having 6 old men staring into their beer in complete silence.{CAMRA note, some of us like Sky TV and music as well as good beer].Excellent service and attractive staff, especially the girl doing the food with the tight trousers.

7 Jul 2007 22:47

The Green Man and French Horn, Covent Garden

Not quite the place it was a few years back (too many tourists) but still a pleasant enough place.Service very good , but the lay out of the pub is not the best.Could do with brightening up a bit.

3 Jul 2007 19:50

The Pillars of Hercules, Soho

I used to go to this pub 20 years ago and I was pleased on a recent visit to see that it has changed little. This is a pub that is over 200 years old and has not become a theme bar .The atmosphere was excellent , the staff very attractive and efficient and I had an enjoyable evening.Well done!
