The kind of place that my mum likes, not bad for a 'spoons' but a bit like drinking in a cinema!
4 May 2010 14:57
Not a bad 'spoons' as they go, full of council workers and union stewards and its nice to see that they have provided a lift at the front for all the diabetic amputees that frequent the place!
4 May 2010 14:53
Now a gourmet buger pub!!!! Had a swift pint here recently, only me, the barmaid and a double amputee, you could have cut the atmosphere with a knife!!!
4 May 2010 14:46
During the 80s and 90s one of the best pubs in London, brilliant fun and a great mixture of people, couldn't keep away from the place, but now I wouldn't piss on it if it was on fire!!!
4 May 2010 14:42
Great pub back in the late 80's, saw loads of great bands in the back room, including the Barracudas!, but now sadly just another formulaic gastropub, shame!
4 May 2010 14:36
Dear oh dear Jim Baxter, you must be a very confident upwardly mobile young metrosexual to make such moralistic and damming statements. I've been in this pub several times and all i can say is that it is a friendly working class pub with cheap beer. get back to your gastropub were you belong!
27 Apr 2010 15:00
Possibly the best pub in the area? Lovely location on the edge of a mews, nice interior, good food, good beer and very friendly staff. A little gem.
23 Apr 2010 13:51
4.30 for a pint of kroney, you really are having a laugh! Took my gold-plated pint outside and overheard two suits complaining about 'bloody unions', 'bloody labour' and for some reason 'drunken loutish celtic supporters', drank up very quickly and moved on. Will definitely not be going back.
23 Apr 2010 13:48
The Duke of Kendal, Marylebone
Strange little pub, but very friendly spanish woman behind bar and great fish and chips for 4.95.
23 Apr 2010 13:38
The Lord Nelson, Holloway Road
opening soon as 'The Horatia N7', whatever that means? Club nights and 'mouthwatering food'!
23 Jan 2010 16:22
The Finsbury Park, Finsbury Park
Only ever go in here if desperate for the toilet when coming off the tube at Manor House. Seems to be turkish/kurdish owned now and more off a bar than a pub, had a pint of Kronenbourg and it tasted and smelt awful, strange place.
15 Jan 2010 14:49
The Old Queens Head, Islington
Out for a stroll with the wife on a saturday night, tried to get into this place but there was a queue and bouncers and the same at nearly every pub we tried along essex road and upper street. The ones that didn't have had banging loud music and were packed. Then we tried to get in to the 'Alma' in Newington Green but it was closing 11.30ish!!!!
22 Dec 2009 11:49
Visited recently with my wife who had never been here before, she thought that it was amazing, can't help but agree. The only problem is that it seems to be on the tour bus route, 2 huge groups of tourists were ushered in had one drink then ushered out, very packed and noisy. Still a must though!
22 Dec 2009 11:40
The Old Ale Emporium, Harringay
I think that you were very unlucky RexRattus the OLd Ale is always changing its real ales and very rarely doesn't have one on. Try again!
22 Dec 2009 11:32
The Lord Nelson, Holloway Road
Seems to have closed, hasn't been open for a few days.
12 Dec 2009 16:30
A nice warm friendly pub, good selection of beers. Live acoustic music on monday nights.
8 Dec 2009 16:06
I take it back, still 2.60 for a pint, it must have been a one off mistake!
12 Aug 2009 15:39
Have the prices gone up or is it just my imagination? Being a discount card carrier I was recently charged 2.75 for my Amstell and not 2.60, the 'Happy Hour' is rapidly becoming a joke considering that it used to be 2 a pint and that the 'Old Ale' sells a pint of 'Becks' for 2.60 at any time.
Anyway i'll still frequent the place as some of the regulars 'Big Paul' et al are a joy.
8 Aug 2009 15:45
The Lord Nelson, Holloway Road
Now called 'The Asburton', has had a lick of paint and seems to be catering for the karaoke crowd. I think it's run by the same people who run the 'Wig and Gown' further down the road?

Ship Centurion Arminius, Whitstable
I'm coming to Whitstable for the 'Oyster Festival' on 18/7/09 and will definitely be having a few in the 'Ship', great atmosphere, frindly punters and staff, great beer and pickled eggs, what more could you ask for. One of my favourite pubs anywere.
2 Jul 2009 10:26
Service has improved thank god, good that alex is back. Now have Aspalls on tap, great stuff, but I do agree with comment about the Sunday Roasts being expensive, I have stopped having them since the price increase.
30 Jun 2009 10:55
The Seven Stars, Chancery Lane
A gem of a pub, one of my favourites in the area. Great home cured herring and potato salad and a pint of cold Bitburger and the two barmaids were very friendly and welcoming, what else could you ask for.
21 Apr 2009 14:17
The Old Ale Emporium, Harringay
By far the best pub on Green Lanes, prices still affordable unlike the Salisbury! and a very friendly, eclectic bunch of regular punters. A cracking selection of beers. A great atmosphere when a big game is on and a good juke box.
21 Apr 2009 14:12
A junk shop full of royalist memoribilla that sells beer and thai food!!! also home to the 'Handlebar Moustache Club'!!! obviously not a chain?
6 Mar 2009 11:51
A very friendly posh estate pub, HB lager on draught and a fantastic map of olde london on the back wall. Not a bad little pub if you are in the area.
6 Mar 2009 11:45
A 'spark' friend of mine told me about this place and said that it served the cheapest breakfasts and pints in London. 1.90 a pint for Becks, San Miguel, Krone etc you're having a laugh, this is cheaper that wetherspoons! If i were in the area and there was a match on I would definitely have a few cheap beers here.
6 Mar 2009 11:42
The Red Lion Hotel, Hillingdon
The worst selection of non-real ale beers I have seen in a long time - Carling, Stella, Strongbow and Guinness! Spoilt for choice! Nice looking pub but no real atmosphere.
6 Mar 2009 11:38
The Duke of Clarence, Islington
Walked past the other day and looks as if it's been turned into posh flats?
11 Dec 2008 12:50
Strange creatures, pubs next to bus and train stations, often full of the 'flotsam and jetsam' of the town and the odd shopper or person moving on to somewhere else. I've always been strangely attracted to them and i always seem to end up in this one whenever i'm in Ipswich. Big pub, standard pub fayre and drinks. Not great but not bad.
9 Dec 2008 11:43
Seems to be the only pub in Hadleigh that reguarly shows football? watched the Ipswich v Norwich derby there recently, heard songs about Delia Smith that would make your hair curl!! Also, seems to be a real lads/mens pub, pissed up and apparently on there way to somewhere else?
Food looks good, big plates of traditional food, steak and kidney pudding etc. Wouldn't recommended it for a quite drink but if the football is on, more than adequate.
9 Dec 2008 11:24
OK pub, but with no real character and a bit soulless. Seems to be trying to go down the 'gastropub' route but not quite succeeding. Has 'Aspalls' cider on draught.
9 Dec 2008 11:16
I've got a mate who lives in Hadleigh, so when ever I visit I always pop into the 'George'. It's a friendly, comfortable place, full of locals and families. Has a dining room at the back and a nice outside area. The foods not bad and the beer is ok. Most of Hadleigh's pubs are ok but not exceptional.
9 Dec 2008 11:14
White Lion Of Mortimer, Finsbury Park
Like every other Wetherspoon pub it does was it says on the packet, cheap beer, a vast selection, cheap food etc, not as bad as the one in Brighton!
25 Nov 2008 15:33
The Twelve Pins, Finsbury Park
Probably the best bar staff in the world!! I have been in here on a Champions League night, five deep at the bar and been served with a minute or two. A haven in heartless world (Finsbury Park that is!!)
25 Nov 2008 15:29
"The best pub around crouch end and finsbury park by a country mile"
You have got to be joking, what about the 'Railway Tavern', 'Haringey Arms', 'Faltering Fullback'
It's a lovely building, but that is all I can say in it's favour.
And the 'Larrick' threatening!!! you really should venture into the real world
25 Nov 2008 15:24
The Stapleton Tavern, Finsbury Park
Big barn of a pub, no atmosphere, expensive pints and really nothing to make it stand out - go to the 'Fullback' instead.
25 Nov 2008 15:03
Gorgeous pub with a lovely interior and a great atmosphere. Definitely the best pub in Deal. Cahrles Hawtrey, of Carry On! fame, used to live just down the road, wonder how many times he was barred?
14 Nov 2008 10:55
This pub is now closed, there is a 'For Let' sign on the front
14 Nov 2008 10:44
The Great Northern Railway Tavern, Hornsey
OMG! "sad old men" and "mothers on benefits" in the same pub! I hope you contacted Social Services immediately? Obviously an assualt on your highbrow sensibilities!
14 Oct 2008 15:28
Used to drink here was I was 16/17 with my older brother, that was 25/26 years ago. It was called The Crown then and was a proper Irish pub. I'm surprised that they have a venue upstairs now, they couldn't years ago because of the listed (William Morris?) ceiling in the main bar area.
6 Oct 2008 10:45
What a great shame! My brother, David Wylie, used to be head barman in this pub (when it was the Red Lion) 25/26 or more! years ago. Used to be a proper Irish, with a good sprinkling of Scots, pub. I used to work across the road and had lunch there most days.
Leytonstone High Road used to be a nice place with some good pubs, but on my last visit it looked very downtrodden and depressing.
6 Oct 2008 10:20
The Old Ale Emporium, Harringay
We will all be very sad to see Dave and Hazel going, they created a very friendly and welcoming pub, if you bought a beer! Good Luck.
3 Oct 2008 14:08
Went in the other day, only 3 other customers. They have tried to brighten it up a bit, pot plants, cutains open etc, but the carpets are filthy, fag burns and chewing gum. It would be great to have bands and alternative music nights, something needed in this area.
26 Sep 2008 15:28
The Old Ale Emporium, Harringay
Hallelujah! The front 'al-fresco' smokers area is now open. Onwards and upwards!
26 Sep 2008 15:16
Cracking food, the 'Fish & Chips' is one of the best i've tasted and the feta used in the 'Greek Salad' is top notch. But please could you install a baby changing unit so when I bring my daughter in I don't need to change her on the floor or benches, it puts people off their food!!!
By the way 'Pablos13', I know exactly what John Bonser was saying, he emailed me and told me, so well done for trying to stick up for him, but I think your efforts were misguided!
26 Sep 2008 15:14
Winchester Pub Hotel, Highgate
Used to drink here 15 years ago, lovely Irish family ran the place and I had a bit of a fling with a young Kiwi barmaid, Heather I think her name was. Great place for playing pool and watching football.
20 Sep 2008 14:34
The Old Ale Emporium, Harringay
Dave and Hazel have now got bottled Erdinger, and only 3.30 a bottle, a bargain. There is also Becks and 'Star' on tap. A great, friendly place to relax and watch Liverpool beat Man U (Hallelujah!!) When the refurb is finished it will be one of the best pubs in the area.
20 Sep 2008 10:39
I've been drinking in this pub for more than 20 years, not very often mind you, but every time I'm in China Town I usually pop in. They have some lovely beers and the upstairs room is usually always empty, a great place to escape the tourist hoards.
20 Sep 2008 10:34
In desperate need of refreshment I ventured forth, only to be very warmly greeted by the landlord who them served me a very cheap pint of lager. I talked with one of the locals and left, the landlord hailing 'see you soon' behind me. Genuine, friendly local pub for local people.
8 Sep 2008 16:10
The Sir Alexander Fleming, Paddington
Another soulless paddigton pub!Had a dodgy pint of flat Grolsch here recently. Full of white van drivers.
5 Aug 2008 15:32
A scottish theme pub!!
Characterless, soulless place selling dodgy lager. The Royal Exchange acroos the road is a much better option.
5 Aug 2008 15:30
Best pub on Holloway Road, great Thai food and a good selection of lagers. I work just down the road from it and often pop in for lunch or after work.
5 Aug 2008 15:27
I have been drinking in this area for years, used to sneak into the LSE bar for a cheap one, but I have never noticed this pub before untill the other day. What a liitle gem! Being a discerning lager drinker I wasn't impressed by the range, but they seemed to cater for the CAMRA fraternity.
25 Jul 2008 15:13
Stumbled upon this pub the other night, very friendly landlady and nicely renovated inside. I had a pint of the HB lager, OK but a bit hoppy! reminded me off the Sam Smith's Pure Brewed. Like the fact that ambulances are parked outside, might come in useful!!!
25 Jul 2008 15:08
Great pub, pitty the governor is a Chelsea supporter!!, and a great safe friendly place for children, especially the back dining room (don't tell Social Services!!) But could I please request that the management consider fitting a baby changing unit somewere, would be really appreciated by the parents who use the place.
9 May 2008 13:14
Great pub because of the location and the clientel but standard selection of beers and chips with everything, but then again thank god it isn't a gastropub!
25 Apr 2008 14:56
The Whitstable Brewery Bar, Whitstable
Great location, great beers but never bloody open!! I've gone there twice in the last few months at different times and always shut!
25 Apr 2008 14:49
Ship Centurion Arminius, Whitstable
Can't keep away, great pub, great lager (bitburger, erdinger & Black Budvar) and very welcoming staff and locals. I'm thinking off moving to Whitstable!!
25 Apr 2008 14:46
Where is this English Community that JohnBonser talks about? And why is he so sad about living in an area with cypriots and turks? Maybe he should drink in Beckton or Canvey Island!
25 Apr 2008 14:43
A bit surprised at the other comments, but then again im not a regular. What a selection of lagers, beers and ciders!! too many too mention, and a nicy cosy interior.
1 Apr 2008 16:56
Pearsons Arms, Crab And Oyster House, Whitstable
Visited a couple of months ago, desperate for something good but not overpriced to eat, so what a great surprise when we tried the new meze style menu, bloody brilliant! Lovely aubergine salad, flat bread, olives etc. and couldn't be more helpful even though she was the only person behind the bar and serving. The regulars were friendly as well. Will definitely be going back.
1 Apr 2008 16:48
Coke and speed, people shagging in the toilets, Andy Ross and his proteges, Coxon, 'Cat in the Hat', Mr Mustard & Nigel & Bruce, chasing young american and japanese girls, Scottie behind the bar, 'I wanna be your Dog' on the jukebox AHH those were the days.
23 Feb 2008 14:07
Babylon's Burning!!!! Used to be (15 years ago) one of the best pubs in London, I had a stall behind it under the arches and drank there every day and every night, as well as the sorely missed Stags Head. I'm sure Kate, Amy etc will pitch in for the refurb!
23 Feb 2008 14:00
I have been told that this pub is closing down and is going to become a gastropub? Is this true? I would rather see it become a music venue again.
23 Feb 2008 13:45
The Faltering Fullback, Finsbury Park
I have heard through the grapevine that this pub is closing down or being taken over. Is this true???
23 Feb 2008 13:41
Generally most people I know like or love this place, but their main gripe is the unattentive service, which is a shame because the bar staff are a nice bunch. The back room is great if you have kids, they can run around and the staff are relaxed about it all.
Also, the pizzas are bloody great and I like the Litovel!!!
What does rampantwurzel mean by "otherwise dreadful area of North london", doesn't he get out much???
29 Jan 2008 15:35
I don't know what Wolfen is on about "dying a slow death"!!! Everytime I go in here it's busy and buzzing, last saturday night it was packed. And anyway whats wrong with a few diehards enjoying the 2 a pint happy hour?
29 Jan 2008 15:15
Ship Centurion Arminius, Whitstable
Great boozer, go here everytime im in Whitstable. Friendly staff, friendly punters and great german draught lager.
21 Jan 2008 15:14
The Pig and Whistle, Earlsfield
Went here yesterday, with three friends all very tired after nearly completing the Wandle Trail from East Croydon. Good Beer, peroni on draught and my real ale drinking buddy said that the 'Special' was excellent also the Roast Dinners were the best we've had for a long time. The only gripes were the prices and the souless and non-descript interior.
21 Jan 2008 14:52
Stopped here recently half way through walking the Wandle Trail. Very friendly old fashioned 'irish' boozer, like a throw back to the 1970's! Drunk guy singing! Good pint of guinness and snacks on the bar.
21 Jan 2008 14:43
The Alma Tavern, Wandsworth Town
What a beautiful little pub, great decor! Food a bit pricey, but the draught peroni is great! Very lively and trendy crowd.
21 Jan 2008 14:37
The Royal Standard, Wandsworth
What a little gem! reminds me of pubs I know in Whitstable and Brighton. Relaxing atmosphere, good beer and you can bring your own food. As a boy from Haringey, Wandsworth seems to have a wealth of great pubs!
21 Jan 2008 14:21
The rudest, surliest landlady anywhere!! She would rather sit on her arse drinking than serve. This used to be an alright, relatively lively boozer, but now the beer smells of rotten eggs, the live music and karaoke are laughable and no food. This could be a great boozer with a little imagination, the only thing i'll say in its defense is that its a good place to watch the football, that's if there is no rugby or tennis on!!!
14 Jan 2008 17:53
Just moved into Enfield, this pub seems to be one of the better ones. Not a bad atmosphere, more students than chavs, which can't be a bad thing? Great location.
12 Jan 2008 10:33
The Lincoln Arms, Bush Hill Park
I thought that I had walked into the set of 'Shameless'!! dodgy, druggy, moody. Reminds me off some of the worst housing estate pubs i've walked into by mistake!
12 Jan 2008 10:28
Better than the Goose in Wood Green, but then so is sitting on a park bench with a can of White Lightning!! OK for a quick cheap pint after work but a chav hell hole on a friday and sat night.
12 Jan 2008 10:25
I have just moved to Enfield and have naturally been trying out the local pubs. This place is a rip off, 3.70 for a pint of Stella, do they think this is Covent Garden? Also, blaring banal MTV music and overall atmosphere very souless.
12 Jan 2008 10:20
I used to drink here (and the Stags Head across the way, now sadly gone)years ago and it was one of the best pubs in London. Once saw the governor stick a meat clever in the bar and whatever happened to the barman with the woolen socks, dirty fingernails and silver sandals? Seems to be a bit up its own arse now!
22 Nov 2007 16:52
The Old Ale Emporium, Harringay
Proper pub, no fancy dancy! Becks Vier on tap, Celtic and Liverpool on the telly, good laugh with the regulars, especially the Scottish lads!!
22 Nov 2007 16:46
The prices have come down on the beer, but the menu has changed again (burgers and pizza)'not very appealing.Good eclectic jukebox. The bar staff are a nice lot when you get to know them but the service is still awful, prancing aroung preening themselves when the punters are waiting to be served, i've given up on a number of occassions.
26 Apr 2007 15:15
Excellent new addittion to the the sparse Green Lanes drinking scene. Good selection of lagers and real ales (happy hour 4.30-6.30 2 a pint!), great food and lovely bar staff. Nice relaxed chilled out atmosphere, but they should re-introduce the open decks night.
26 Apr 2007 14:48
The Effra Hall Tavern, Brixton
Just been told that it has closed down, is this true?
20 May 2010 15:26
