The White Horse, Parsons Green
Relieved to see some restoration of reputation with Binghams Twyford Tipple and Brightwater Little Nipper - hope this is not just a flash in the pan though!

White Horse refugee desperately seeking stimulation of taste buds has been forced to take refuge in ale houses in Clapham, Chiswick, South Wimbledon, New Malden, Kentish Town, Highgate, Pimlico, Farringdon, Clerkenwell, Borough, Hoxton, Islington, Claygate, Hackney, South Kensington & Mayfair.

Today - the most boring uninteresting selection of real ales that I have seen for a long time in The White Horse. This used to be THE real ale pub in London but it would appear that they are not aware that there are now more than 1,150 micro-breweries in the UK from which they could select/order!

Great little pub well worth seeking out - great selection of up to eight real ales from micro-breweries served at perfect temperature and in superb condition - sensibly mostly concentrating on ales under 5% - and all at £3.50 per pint! No food, but good scotch eggs/sausage rolls & pork pies supplied by a local delicatessen. Friendly atmosphere. Excellent real ale festivals and live music.

The selective house bitter, Hobsons Best (3.8% ; from Shropshire), at £3.50 per pint is no longer available having been recently replaced by the returning ubiquitous house bitter, Harveys Best Bitter (4% ; from East Sussex), at £3.90 per pint. The other regular house real ales are Adnams Broadside and Oakham JHB. Normally up to five guest real ales are available, mostly from micro-breweries, although the regional Fullers ESB is currently on hand-pump. The remaining 10 hand-pumps on the bar are generally only in use for real ale festivals (about four times per year).

2011 Old Ale Festival this last weekend at The White Horse was the best yet - superb selection of milds, porters, stouts and old ales from select micro-breweries at reasonable prices (bearing in mind some of the strengths) plus quality professional musicians performing live - two top class bands on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon. Another welcome addition this year was the availability of chef's delicious individual homemade pies as sensibly priced snacks to go with the ales. Many thanks to the management and staff for making mine and my wife's weekend so thoroughly enjoyable.

I first frequented The Bull some 48 years ago and was very pleased to see it open up again after having been closed for some years and inhabited by squatters. And what an excellent transformation and delightful refurbishment - but then one would expect no less from the new governor, Dan Fox, who for the past few years has been presiding at the renown White Horse in Parsons Green. Superb debut of their own brews here last night. Made to feel very welcome as well as enjoying seeing some old friends again. After several pints of their own excellent Beer Street at 2.80 per pint and savouring the menu we did not want to leave. But we will definitely return.

Excellent beer festival last weekend - many thanks to Linda, Roger & all the staff. Looking forward to next year's festival now.

You just know that the ales and service here is going to be good as it is under similar management as the Eagle Ale House. And so it proved today on my first visit (which will now be one of many, especially on a weekend) with four excellent real ales including Loddon Hullabaloo, Hepworths Organic Bitter, Tintagel Castle Rock and a Dark Star. The "icing on the cake" though is the superb and good value food dispensed on weekends under a separate franchise by chefs, who have worked in Michelin starred restaurants, using all fresh ingredients and the finest Cornish fare. Food of this quality at this price is a very rare commodity indeed especially in a pub and even in most gastro-pubs.
PS: No fear of ale served in hot glasses or plastic glasses here as experienced in other pubs employing inexperienced management and ignorant bar staff.

Warning - plastic glasses served in the live music room where the bar shuts early without notice. Barmaid in main bar needs a lesson in customer relations. Definitely not a pub to go for an evenings unspoilt civilised enjoyment. I shall not return.

Good value quality three course Valentine's dinner justifiably sold out. Joyfully over-indulged (perhaps?) on delicious Kings Horsham Bitter (3.8%) and returned home a very happy man with my chauffeuse. This place is a real hidden gem. Thank you so much for a great evening.

Excellent beer festival here last week - far more civilised than the CAMRA Battersea Town Hall Festival as well as the ales here at The Falcon being far better kept and choicewise far more to my taste - Thornbridge Brock (4.1%) being outstanding.

Excellent selection of festive real ales on handpump including Sharps Cornish Stout (4.3%), York Centurian Ghost and Adnams Old Ale (4.1%) in addition to more than a dozen other micro-brew real ales including Barnsley Bitter and Thornbridge Jaipur.

Great pub for real ales but noticeably and disappointingly no seasonal micro-brew real ales (e.g. old ale, stout or porter) available on handpump on my visits over the festive period.

Real treat to see and hear jazz trumpeter Dick Pearce here last Saturday and especially looking forward to blues maestro Giles Hedley on guitar, harmonicas and vocals this coming Saturday. This tiny pub is a gem with an ever changing good selection of well kept real ales.

It appears to me that the staff, and especially the manager, are working extremely hard to maintain standards with a rather uninspiring menu compared to that which used to be here - but thankfully at least the innovative grazing boards have remained and there are some inviting specials. Good choice of micro-brew real ales including Weltons, Tintagel and Hammerpot on last visit. Recent introduction of Greene King IPA though tends not to bode well!

What a joy to find - bags of character and friendly welcome by very hospitable landlady who is clearly a real ale aficionado and keeps an excellent cellar. Hepworths Sussex was superb. Also tempting were a real ale from a Wiltshire micro-brewery and a winter warmer from Dark Star. Choice of three guest ales posted on the website plus regular Adnams, Fullers & Youngs (really Charles Wells!) and Thatchers cider on draught. Arrived too late for food but they still managed to provide a small cooked pizza which was just what was needed. Did not want to leave and will definitely return - especially for the Sunday lunch as icing on the cake of the sort of delightful discovery not experienced for some time.

As an iconic CAMRA pub it still defeats me how every time I come here (as little as possible now in view of my experiences) I get my real ale served in a hot glass. Yesterday evening I politely remarked upon this to the response that we are very busy! In my local pub which has 21 hand-pumps and can take over £30,000 in wet sales on a single night and is one of the three busiest pubs in London, if not the country, I never get my ale served in a hot glass. Why, oh why are staff not trained in this much smaller pub about hot glasses despite my past communications with Harveys Brewery on this topic?
