Dun Cow, Sunderland

Recently taken over by Camerons and badged as part of their Head of Steam chain. They've spent a lot of money restoring the interior, and as a result this is a seriously nice traditional boozer. Decent range of real ales, too. Well worth a look.

The Isis, Sunderland

Probably the best pub in Sunderland now, with an excellent range of well-kept ales, nicely restored surroundings and good service. Proper drinker's pub, no food or screens.

The Lamb, Bloomsbury

This is a belting pub. I've come here on and off for 30 years and it remains a classic. A remarkable Edwardian interior, in good nick but largely unspoilt, which is worth a visit on its own; and decent, well-kept Youngs ale.

It's true that it gets crowded. That tends to happen with nice places. It's also true that the food is unremarkable and expensive. But this is a jewel among traditional pubs and should be on anyone's list of the top ten in London.
