The White Horse, Hitcham

Been here a couple of times in the last 6 months and on both occasions has been great. Lovely old building which somehow managed to escape the Greene King 'modernisation' treatment before it was sold to become a free house some time ago. Really friendly landlord, good wholesome pub food and a real joy to find two real ales from local breweries (Woodfordes and Nethergates) kept in perfect condition. They have started doing B&B recently too, in converted stables at the back. Will definitely be returning and recommending.

The Swan Inn, Monks Eleigh

Not sure why everyone's obsessing quite so much about the food aspect. Yes it is 'restauranty' with a deserved reputation for good food, but they have also been more than happy to serve us just with drinks on the numerous times that we've been there. They have a small bar area which housed several drinkers the last time we visited just last week. And the well-kept Adnams beer is a welcome change in GK country. Not that you'd go there for its authentic pub atmosphere, but if you're after a decent pint and no food, they certainly seem more than welcoming to us!

The Gardeners Arms, Tostock

Have to say agree with most of the negative comments. We used to live in this place - always warm, friendly, classic village pub with top class beer and good value food. Now decor is cold, staff indifferent and beer/ food nothing special. Shame, used to be a real gem.

The Angel Hotel, Bury St Edmunds

Technically not a pub (it's an hotel) but they have just done out the bar to make a very trendy(if expensive) venue. Decorated with pretentious staged pictures of "local Suffolk folk" and staffed entirely by surly youths, nevertheless it's probably one of the smarter places to go in this otherwise poorly-served town. Range of Suffolk beers & ciders as well as long and classy wine list.

The Six Bells, Felsham

Relaxed, warm, great combination of local pub and place to get decent, interesting and well cooked food at wide range of good value prices. Friendly Irish landlord/ lady (he cooks; she runs the restaurant and bar). Love it!
