Surprisingly good for a pub this close to Oxford Circus. A couple of decent enough ales (Greene King IPA and Adnams Broadside on my last visit) and some good food to much on while you're watching the footie. Recommended if only for the fact that if there are two football matches (e.g. Champions' League) on they'll at least show one featuring a team from London. Unlike all the other Manc/Scouser-pleasing cr*pholes in central London.

Have been wanting to give this place a try for a while, since I was reasonably impressed by the Idle Hour in Barnes. First up, this is completely different in terms of atmosphere: it's quite noisy compared to the original. The front bar is ok, and the decor is fine, if slightly unoriginal. But overall the bar is nothing special, and as noted there are no draught ales. But (there's always a but), the service in the restaurant area is dreadful. I realise that Saturday nights are busy, but leaving customers to stare at a menu for 40 minutes is just plain shoddy. Then there's the quality of the food itself. While my friends enjoyed their koftas and other nibbly bites, my thai coconut chicken soup was thin and watery, and the noodles looked like the variety normally served up with the aid of a kettle. Unimpressive, especially for a tenner. Finally, how can any establishment in this day and age expect to get away with watering down as distinctive-tasting a brew as Hoegaarden? Disappointing.

This is about as far away from the old O'Neills as you could get. As previously noted, non-smoking restaurant downstairs, loungey-type bit upstairs - although no separate bar. Nice decor, if a little dark, decent furniture and a good-quality refurb. Truly outstanding range of beers: I could be mistaken but counted 4 real ales and at least 8 other draught beers, including Erdinger and Paulaner. Reasonably expensive, but not off-putting prices as far as the drinks are concerned - lagers from about �3. Food looked a bit steep though. No real problems with the staff on my visit, and as for "undesirable" clientele, the manager was very quick to eject a girl who tried to use fake ID. Top marks for that.

Awesome range of beers and surprisingly reasonable prices. Didn't sample the food - it looked as though it would have been pretty difficult to get a seat on a Saturday night anyway. A must visit if you're in Norwich though.

Bright. Blonde wood and light colours everywhere. Very smokey... not the sort of place to be if you're feeling a bit worse for wear. Full of attractive women, and therefore also full of pretentious pricks. Ho-hum.

Nice range of 4 real ales, friendly bar staff, excellently placed big screen for the footie. This place wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea, but I liked it. One thing though - they need to sort the drains out. To borrow a phrase, when it's been raining, the bar area smells like a turd covered in burnt hair.

Looks as though it has been subjected to a fairly ruthless sanitisation job at some point in the past - I'd agree with some of the comments about the decor. However, there are far worse places to while away an afternoon drinking Deuchars IPA, eating the (very reasonably priced) food and watching a rugby/football game. Nice.

If I thought I could get away with it I'd plagiarise a bit more of Don Logan's dialogue, because the people that run this place clearly need him to come round and frighten them into doing a decent job. Crap beer, crap decor, food so crap a vulture wouldn't eat it. Oh and full of that horrible mix of tourists and office workers that you normally only get in railway station bars. Great.

Nice pub, tucked away on a residential street in sarf London. Polite staff, decent ales, Victorian (or at the very latest Edwardian) decor makes for a very old fashioned feel. Overall: nice, but I can't help thinking I've stepped into a timewarp when I visit...

Yep. Interchangeable with pretty much any other bar in the area, this is a fairly unremarkable drinking establishment. They did have a 2 for 1 offer on bottled beer when I got there, and 2 pint pitchers are about 6 or 7 quid. Expensive, but not outrageously so for the area. No complete arseholes amongst the staff (although I live in London, and therefore don't tip when buying beer - barstaff take note). Bog troll in the gents' can also be safely disregarded without fear of retribution in the form of being called a "stingy c***". Lack of unreserved seats a major issue though.

OK. So I revisited, and the food is not bad at all, the barman from the previous vist was nowhere in sight, and all in all a better experience was had than on the previous occasion.
However, mr_lunch, I would point out that very rarely is a pub's no-smoking section separated from the rest of the pub by an airlock. Furthermore, if you think that circa 12 quid for a steak without chips is "reasonably priced", good luck to you. I don't; the food here's good, but not that good.

Who gives a sh*t about Magners anyway? It's just a modern version of what we all drank in the park aged 14.
Nice bar, awful wallpaper, and the seating and layout are just weird - doesn't make for a great atmosphere. However, the (bar) food is worth trying, and there's a reasonable range of beers.

S'alright. Nothing special at all, but not as bad as Algis makes out. One of the bar "maid" was startlingly rude on my last visit, and does tend to fill up with staff from the National Archives (hence too busy on Friday nights).

Haven't been for years. The last time was on a weeknight, when it was full of braying besuited tossers drinking euro-fizz lager. I brayed a bit, drank a couple of pints of euro-fizz, and then left. I hope to Christ that this place has improved.

Agree with the comments below about the Soho Red. Worth popping in if you're in the area, but I do agree it could do with a makeover - the layout is all wrong and means that there's virtually no atmosphere at all. And the prices are not what you'd call competetive.

Wandered past the other night in a desperate search for somewhere to watch the Arsenal game (most pubs showing Man U vs. Celtic...in London. Right.).
Point being, it looked very closed. Possibly for refurbishment. Anyway, on previous visits it's always looked like it could do with tarting up, but I hope they don't turn it into a nasty modern shiny bar.

Er...except you can't watch football there because, according to the barmaid, they don't have Sky Sports. Oh well, reasonable (and reasonably cheap) pint whilst I waited under the misapprehension that I might be able to watch a game there the other night. Then I went somewhere better.

Has a fantastic range of ales, a really good reason to visit this place. Proper pub atmosphere - small, dark, smokey - and decent music.
A few weirdos about though, and judging from the state of the place, and the decor, it hasn't been cleaned since last October 31st.

Decent enough range of ales (including Doom Bar) when I visited at the weekend. Unfortunately this place is part of the town hall complex, which means it tries a bit too hard to be all things to all people: Not pubby enough to be a pub and not cafeyeyeyey enough...ok, you get the picture. Point being, it's a wee bit sterile for a session. Also very poorly thought out as a live music venue, and the sound quality is pretty bad. Far from the worst place you could find yourself, though.

Goose On Union Street, Glasgow
Harmless enough during the day. As Donalia has pointed out, a useful meeting spot, being right next to Union St. Station. Cheap as chips (�1.48 for a pint of bitter), although several of the beers were off. Food looked to be bog-standard pub fayre, with a whiff of Wetherspoons (who manages this place). TVs showing the World Cup when I went in, too.
Average, really, but probably not the place for an extended session.

Can't really see what all the fuss is about. Virtually empty last Friday. Very All Bar One inside, and loud and smokey to boot. Will revisit and sample the food but I do not have high hopes.
The barman who served me was an arrogant tool as well. The choice in the area may be limited, matey, but on this showing there are at least two other pubs on this street where I can go without fear of being treated like a tramp.

Hadn't been here for a while until last weekend, and an update is required.
Not much has changed in terms of decor (take it or leave it), range of drinks (excellent, but see below), food (indifferent) or service (f***ing abysmal, and more on this in a mo'). What struck me was that at 10pm on a Saturday night, the place was empty, whereas on previous visits one had to struggle to get through the door.
Dear Mitchells and Butler, there are reasons for this. They are the so-called staff you employ in this shoddy excuse for a pub. Take, for instance, the ordering of wine. If my friend asks for a glass of SA Pinotage, and ends up being served a Casillero del Diablo by a guy who's more interested in looking at his reflection in the mirror behind the bar, how the f*** is she supposed to be impressed? Furthermore, it's usual in the UK to offer your clientele a discretionary 20 mintutes' drinking up time after the bar closes - and not start agressively herding people towards the door at 10:55pm. Oh, and most of your bitter is off too. I suggest someone from the managing company gets a grip. Quickly.

Lovely country pub slap-bang in the middle of nowhere. Good Fyne ales (Somerled in particular) and an interesting selection of locals. Right next to the Atlantic Bridge, so very, very scenic. Highly recommended.

It is what it is. Actually that's a load of rubbish; it's f***ing terrible, but I can see the appeal if you're too drunk or too stupid to get in anywhere else. I'm surprised that it doesn't feature regularly on TV programmes about binge-drinking and antisocial behaviour. Certainly David Attenborough could find plenty in here to base his next wildlife series on.
As for the ridiculous comment that bouncers in tuxedos add a bit of class, this only applies if you consider blue WKD, Coleen McLoughlin, and breast implants similarly "classy".
Anyone who doesn't want to waste their time on God's green Earth should stay the hell away.

This pub is anything but great. Decent enough range of ales. Average food. Crap service. Might be a clone of the Mudlark, just moved upriver a couple of hundred yards. The outside bit is best - you don't have to look at the faux-olde-worlde decor.

It's an All Bar One. Still don't know what to expect? You haven't missed much. Still, the beers are ok (though most people stick to bottled lager in these sorts of places), the food on the acceptable side of average. So why would you go here if you found yourself in the area? Oh yes, that's right. You'd go if you were a complete tool with no imagination.

Spoke to one of the guys behind the counter last week, and they are actually supposed to be opening a bar in the area in the next few weeks... so now you know.
They also stock the Sierra Nevada and Anchor Steam, for those of you with an interest in fine American brews.

The Horniman at Hays, Southwark
Oh dear, oh dear. First visited when I began work nearby a year ago, and haven't been back since. Beers are average, service is poor (I dare you to try and get served after work on a Friday night), food cold and unappetising, the staff are as miserable as sin...Do you want me to go on? No? Good, because it's just depressing.

OK for s swift pint, forget it if you're looking for anything else. Beers are reasonably kept, and the place is clean and smart enough, but it lacks character. Also, can I just point out that although the menu is the same as Horniman's, the food isn't any better. Ploughmans without cheese or ham? Get a grip.

Good pub, but by no means the best I've visited. The range of beers is outstanding, and given how busy it often is (Friday evenings after work epsecially) the staff cope pretty well. However, from reading some of the more enthusiastic reviews, you'd think it was some sort of Nirvana for CAMRA members - honestly, if you've never been before, and you approach it with that attitude, you'll be disappointed. Not slagging the place off, by any means, just managing expectations...

Love it. Quiet, relaxed, good service, outside toilets, Deuchars IPA and pickled eggs. Everything a pub of this type should be. Can't recommend it highly enough.

The Queen Adelaide, Wandsworth
Popped in here for a quick pint yesterday as the Cat's Back was rammed. Agree with the previous comments about Youngs spending huge amounts of money renovating this place, but they have done a good job (unlike say, the Boathouse).
Was still pretty busy but we managed to get a seat in marquee bit outside. All the usual Youngs' beers, plus Leffe on tap (not recommended for Sunday afternoon). Really good food as well. Prices are a little on the steep side. Bogs were the cleanest I have seen in a pub in London.
Experience only really marred by a drinking buddy worrying about whether the door to the garden was open or closed...possibly due to Leffe-induced paranoia.

Good ales (all the usual Fuller's suspects), but very smokey and quite dark. Which is good.

Not my usual sort of joint...so was pleasantly surprised when I found myself enjoying a Kirin here a couple of weeks ago. A tad on the expensive side, and the music is (a) loud and (b) shit, but the some of the female clientele are very easy on the eye.

Lovely country pub, four real ales, excellent food. What more can I say? Er...Friendly staff, log fires, decent tunes on the stereo. Unfortunately the friends I was visiting will be moving from the area shortly, so I'll need to find another excuse to go back!

Odd sort of place. Absolutely shocking range of beers on tap: 2 lagers, Smiths and Guinness. Great. Food seems reasonable (well, the chips were alright) and staff friendly enough. Loses marks for the grubby furniture. The question asked by one other reviewer still stands: what is this place trying to be? The obvious answer is "average".

Not bad considering where it is. Nicely decorated, good range of beer, ok music, and full of tossers.
Food was good, although the service was pretty crap.
Gents' toilets are a disgrace; only the waste traps are plumbed in on the urinals, which presumably means they don't get flushed. Nice.
This place is owned by Mitchells and Butler, who own, amongst other venues, the Jolly Gardeners in Putney, and the Sun in Barnes. On scale of 1-10 this place is about halfway in between.
One more thing for reviewers of this (and other) pubs: Look up the original meaning of the word "funky". Right. Got it? Never, ever, ever use it again to describe a pub or bar. I mean "Having a moldy or musty smell: funky cheese; funky cellars.
Having a strong, offensive, unwashed odor," is hardly selling the place is it? Or is that actually what you meant?

Not so much of a pub as a restaurant with a bar. Dropped in yesterday for lunch on a whim, and wasn't disappointed. Decent beer, though I thought �3 for a Heineken was a tad OTT. On the other hand this is London, I s'pose.
Had steak and chips, both of which were excellent - the chips were the best I've had in a pub in a while. The staff were very busy, but friendly and efficient. Only drawback was that the place was full of young families with kids, and therefore the atmosphere was somewhat akin to a childrens' tea-party.
Would certainly go back, but probably in the evening!

Nice setting by the river. Quite a nice layout in the main bar (hideous carpet in the seating area though). Good range of bottled beers and wines, but the only bitter on tap is John Smiths...ugh! Staff are quite nice and friendly.
Only real gripe with this place was the New Year's Eve party. Was led to believe this would be something special, but to be quite honest, the setup, layout and organisation of the upstairs "River Room" wasn't up to scratch at all. Had a good time, but maybe that was down to the people I was with rather than the venue. Won't be going back next year!

Used to be a bar/restaurant called Dominoes until earlier in the year. The new owners have brightened up the downstairs bar considerably. Can't comment on the food, but it looks good, and they're certainly busy.
Excellent range of Otter beers on tap (including Bright). Poor selection of draught lagers though.
Shaping up to be one of Honiton's finer establishments.

Used to be my local until a couple of months ago. Revisited last weekend to be greeted by jaw-droppingly stupid and rude barman. If I ask politely for a pint of coke, I expect coke (or equivalent) served up in a pint glass - if you can't get that through your thick skull at the third time of asking, you've got no business being behind the bar.
Obviously this guy had been taking lesons off the landlord, who's miserable presence I only put up with in order to watch the footie on his TV...And while we're on the subject, Dan, why p*ss off your regulars by turning off the footie in order to show the rubgy for a bunch of tossers in All Blacks shirts who've never set foot in your gaff before? Still, I suppose your locals couldn't like you any less, so why give a monkeys about them?
On the plus side, decent beers (though expensive) and generally nice locals. A good bit of banter, excellent Thai food, and of course, live jazz. Just a shame that the landlord and a couple (though not all) of his staff work so hard to make you feel unwelcome.

Can't really explain what it is that I liked about this place. Could be the excellent range of beers, the interesting collection of (for want of a better word) bric-a-brac, the friendly atmosphere, or the log fire. Very different from any other pub I've been to, and all the better for it.

Poor, basically. Could be made a hell of a lot better by either turning it back into a traditional pub (of which there is a distinct lack in Barnes) or a more chilled out bar with sofas and decent music (see Jolly Gardeners in Putney). What this area doesn't need is a perenially empty gastropub that doesn't even serve good food.

OK for a drink. Decent range of beers and especially wines. Nice decor, and you can see why the hack from various national newspaper have given good reviews. However, one suspects they only stopped for a drink, looked at the menu, and then left.
Nobody was impressed with the food (there were four of us on my last visit) and it's expensive as well. To be honest, if you're in the area to drink, this ain't a bad choice. If you're eating there are better restaurants across the road and on Church Road in Barnes. A shame, because this part of the world could do with a nice boozer where you can enjoy a bite to eat. At the moment, the Bridge is about halfway there.

Decent Fullers beers (although no Chiswick when I last visited) and standard pub food. Shows footie on several TVs dotted around the place. The main problem is the lack of atmosphere...It's inoffensive and very bland. Not bad for a quiet half or three, but I don't think I'd care to spend a whole evening there.

Agree with the general concensus of opinion in the last few posts. The only Wetherspoons pub worth visiting, probably because of the size and character of the building itself. On my last visit a small marquee outside housed a sort of mini beer festival - excellent stuff. Staggering distance from both main stations as well.
Even if you normally hate Spoons pubs, give this one a try should you find yourself in "Executor". Top banana.

A good pub by Honiton's rather low standards. Decent pint of Otter (on my last vist they were also serving Exmoor). Can get a bit cramped and smokey in the front bar. Having to go outside to go to the toilet is a bit of a joke in winter though.

Fantastic. Proper boozer for proper people. Decent pint of Fullers served by friendly and talkative bar staff. Haven't eaten here yet, but the food served to people at the next table looked decent enough.
Best pub I've been to in Epsom - certainly better than the crappy pubs on and around the High Street.

Have revised the opinion below based on the experience of friends who visited yesterday. As a bar it's OK. Still expensive, still none of the clientele wearing Chavski shirts. However it must be run by a bunch of complete oxygen thieves; food and service was utter cr*p. Over an hour's wait for a sandwich, which when it finally arrived, turned out to have been made with stale bread. Cheers then. Considering that this is more of a bar/restaurant than a pub, you might think the owners would want to get the basics right. A crying shame really.
5 out of 10 for the bar, 1 for the food. Do the maths, and sort yourselves out.

My new local. Nice atmosphere, decent pint of 6X, friendly bar staff, courtyard garden. Large sofas at the front of the bar, and more seating at the side. No TV, which (strangely) I found to be a blessing.
New owners have done a good job on the refurb - smartening the place up while ensuring it still looks like a pub. My only complaints would be that there are not enough seats, and that the area with tables in the saloon bar is very open and a bit barn-like.
Otherwise, good job. I'll be back this weekend to sample the food. And the beer.

Decent pint of Ordinary. Food was excellent for the money - good steaks and fajitas (never seen fajitas in a Young's pub before either).
Funny layout - it's a bit barn-like. I've never seen this place pre-refit, so can't comment on whether it was improved, but I assume it wasn't all one big room before.
OK for watching the football, but there are a few knuckle-draggers, so watch who you cheer for. Saturday nights they sometimes have karaoke. Nuff said.

First of all, there is very little wrong with this place. It has a good range of beers (REAL beers) and good, if slightly expensive food.
However, I cannot believe the number of comments regarding the clientele. Every narrow minded oxygen thief who's made derogatory remarks about sloanes, rugger buggers, Highgrove types etc., take note of the following: Anyone who didn't just fall out of a tree knows that this part of the world has been full of that sort of people since the year dot. If you're so intolerant that you're unable to deal with people of a different social background DO NOT GO - you'll be much happier hanging about with the knuckle-dragging Chavski fans on the Broadway.

Cracking pub. Good beers, decent food. TV, music. Function room. Nice bar staff. This place has the lot. It's fairly traditional in terms of layout, but if you want modern decor and cocktails you're missing the point.
Best pub in the area by a country mile.

The Horse and Groom, Belgravia
Oh, I must have got the wrong pub. Booked the upstairs function room...well I say room, but you couldn't swing a cat in there, and there was no door. Function alcove would be more appropriate. Food was cold, and to be honest fairly crap.
On the plus side, the locals were friendly, there's a good range of beers and snacks (reindeer sausages, etc.). The barman was friendly, but a bit strange, and didn't strike be as being very well organised.
I struggle to think of a reason to revisit this place - probably best left to the locals.

The Grouse and Claret, Belgravia
Held a work function here in the Cellar Bar a couple of months back. Fantastic service - the landlord and landlady couldn't do enough for us. Good food and good range of beers on tap. Upstairs main bar is perhaps a bit gaudy, but overall this place has a really nice atmosphere. Definitely worth seeking this place out.

Pikey-free pub on the back streets of Putney. Seating out front (and I seem to remember a garden-type effort at the back). Nice, clientele, apart from the bloke who spilled his drink down my back and then expected me to apologise. You could always watch where you're going, chum. Other than that, nice people (nice is a relative term - this is London, after all), nice decor, nice music. Nice. I'll be back.

Agree with a lot of what's been said below. OK for watching the sport during the daytime, but I wouldn't bother drinking there during the evening. Food and bogs awful. Staff considerably worse than that. Hey, you're not being forced to work there, are you? If old-fashioned values like politeness, putting the customer first and providing a decent service don't suit you, consider getting a job working on the railway.

Nice. Generally pikey-free, traditional boozer (perhaps the prices discourage them). Handy hint for other users of this site (see below): If you don't like rugby/rowing types it's not just this pub you should avoid - I would have thought most of SW15 would be a no-go area.

Nice refurb. Funny sort of place to find on the backstreets of Barnes though. Visited on a Friday and it was fairly quiet - holiday season so most locals away in Tuscany/Bordeaux I expect. Good range of beers, friendly locals (including the biggest dog I have ever seen in a pub). Large TV, but somehow I doubt that this is the sort of place people go to watch the football. Probably really good when busier - must pay another visit.

Can't believe people are still going to this place. Went back recently to give them another chance and wished I hadn't bothered. Service made me want to tear the barman's arm off and beat him with the soggy end. I'd rather drink turps and p*ss on a bonfire, than spend my cash in here to be honest.

Average by Wetherspoons' standards, which means cr*p by everyone else's. Full of fat girls and blokes in 3/4 length trousers and vests. Change from 4 quid for 2 pints is always nice though!

Superb pub in a town smack bang in the middle of nowhere. For once our American buddies appear to have understood the meaning of the word "pub".
Deschutes Brewery brew their own ales (try the Cascade Ale) and the food is pretty special too. If you're in the area (say within 200 miles), this place is well worth a visit.

The Library, Islington
Nice. First went to this pub after a match up the road, and although there were a few of my fellow fans there, the atmosphere didn't suffer at all. Interesting decor, OK-ish beers (if you like lager) and decent staff. Big thumbs up.
