The Old Dispensary, Camberwell
Went on saturday for lunch. The place reeked of smoke so we left. It wasnt that anyone was smoking but they need to sort out the ventillation. I smoke by the way but I dont want to eat in an ashtray

Any chance of Nachos on the menu - would have thought they would have gone down well given the groups and football crowd.

Food isnt the greatest. Its not particularly bad or expensive but then its not great either. I hate the "chips" - just because you cant be bothered peeling them doesnt make them "hand made". I'd rather have machine made, nice, proper chips. Think the service is nice and friendly if a little slow. On the whole though, its not a bad addition to the area.

Went to Gowlett recently and thought it had great potential as a local : didnt try the pizzas but given what the people at the next table were served will definately want to go back and sample. However, we come back to the same issue..... is it acceptable in a pub to let children crawl all over the floor, or even worse, let doting parents come over to your table (because the kids have made their own way there) and tell them that its naughty to play with matches ? SORT IT OUT !!!!!

By the way i love the castle but i like the choice. I hope places like the castle stay "ungentrified" we need places like that for those that want them. Had mixed feelings when the Foresters went. Want E Dulwich to stay accessable for all! I dont want to live in Clapham. I prefer "hand cut" to french fries by the way. : )

for someone who lived in E Dulwich 9 years ago before it 'gentrified', i would agree with anonymous. I remember the only place that used to be decent to go for a drink (or a jug of sangria) was the mexican, and therefore wholely love the variety that e dulwich now offers. Lets not be negative after all we all benefit in the end as each chooses where they would like to go and if old boozers do it for you there are still a few around ( the castle ?) not quite my cup of tea but good if you want a cheap pint and like watching sports so I'm told. For the record, think Magdala is great, good priced food and lovely friendly staff, which is what i look for in a local place

As a pub/bar this place is great. It has a really friendly vibey atmosphere. the wine is great and very reasonable priced. The one thing which is not so great however, is the food. I have eaten here on three occassions with my wife. I have asked for the steak to be medium/welldone. On both occassions it has been cooked very very well done. I have had the fish and chips and unfortunately that disappointed with a bland and soggy batter - the same problem with the skate "knobs". My wife has has the squid with chilli and just about blew her mouth of as a result of way way too much chilli. She also tried the burger which she felt was over dry. All this and the food really isnt cheap at all. The fish is 6 (i think) sounds reasonable but not when you then add on 2.50 for chips. I can go to the Sea Cow and get a whole cod fillet and chips for less - not the half a fillet that I got. Seems like a big moan - its not intended that way as I do like this place and just dont want to see it let itself down a bit whith its food.

The Rye Pub, Dining Room and Garden, Peckham Rye
Look I've said this before, the food is great , the service is great but for gods sake sort out the kids thing. Sunday lunch there was a kid sitting on a potty in the middle of the dining room. It missed and pissed all over the floor. This is a PUB! Either have a family room where the kids have to eat or just ban them all together.

The Uplands Bar and Brasserie, East Dulwich
A few years ago this pub was run by a kiwi bloke who believed in good honest cooking at honest prices. Sadly since then it has just gone downhill. Where their used to be homemade burgers there are now grey cheap "economy" burgers. Havent been there for about a year and a half as a result. Also way too many kids and a large part that resembles more of a Motorway Serive station restaurant than a pub.
Shame too, about the gruesome crew that inhabit the far right side of the bar!

Liquorish, East Dulwich
Went back to Liquorish last night for the first time in quite a while. Was used to getting a decent meal at a decent price. I had the burger and chips and my wife had the fillet of bream with "crostini" and olive tapenade. My burger bun must have been days old! It was soooooo chewy that you could not bite through it or cut through it with a knife! The burger was pretty ropey as well. The "crostini" was none other then a piece of ordinary white toast. If Liquorish think thios is good enough with the competition in Lordship Lane they are fooling themselves as sooner or late people begin to walk with their feet. Come on Liquorish pull your socks up.
