The Kings Head, Tooting

Good refurb. Not really changed, but tidied up alot, and outside seating area added at the front (in addition to the one at the side).

If only Youngs had been similarly respectful to the Devonshire down in Balham...

The Duke of Devonshire, Balham

what a shame. what were they thinking of when they came up with this re-design of a classic London pub.

The Long Room Bar and Hotel, Tooting

Real ale is an improvement. They started with boring but safe London Pride, but had Black Sheep on last week (@3/pint it's expensive, but in line with their other pricing). Reasonably well kept, but a little hazy and flat. Probably not turning over enough - the pub seems pretty empty evry time I go in, or past...

If they must have bouncers, why do they have to wear those day-glo jackets that make them look like road-builders? Total spoils the up-market image (and prices) they want.

So +2 for the ale, but -1 for the atmosphere, and -1 more for the day-glo. So remains at 6 points...

The Bedford, Balham

Used to live just round the corner from here, but The Bedford was never quite good enough to make it my regular. The ales aren't kept that well, service can be slow - and Friday and Saturdays are worth avoiding unless your going for the comedy.

Comedy: the performances are normally great, but you have to go through the enormous hassle of queuing to enter at 7ish, desperately trying to secure a table/seats suitable for your party and then waiting for the performances to start at 9ish, during which time of course they rake in the money as you've nothing better to do than drink and eat their school-dinner type food.

The Leather Bottle, Earlsfield

Good pub - and not too much of a restaurant. Worth a stroll or bus from Tooting. Well kept ale.

The Kings Head, Tooting

Best pub in Tooting, and has been for the last 3 years, at least. Good, friendly staff, decent food. Always got a couple of real ales, decently kept. Comedy nights, music, quizes etc.

Sky sports in all bars, but not too intrusive, except in the back room when they have it on the big screen, which is fair enough.

Small outside area to the side.

Hoochimama's Bar Bistro, Tooting

This is NOT a pub, but a bar. Interesting selection of foreign lagers on the bar - a shame they normally only have one or two available.

Pizza's great, and reasonable value - but food service can be very, very slow.

Friendly staff, when they're not chatting to their mates

The Selkirk, Tooting

I good reliable pub. Friendly staff, reasonable food, beer garden. Some footie and rugby in the back bar only, but I don't think they've got Sky.

They could do with a little help looking after their real ale - I've had to take a few pints back to the bar as they're cloudy, etc

The Long Room Bar and Hotel, Tooting

Now 'The Long Room Bar'. A huge improvement over The Mitre but, as monkeyboysupreme suggests, in danger of not being a pub anymore - rather more a 'bar'.

Great to see it attracting a younger and more mixed-sex clientele- and non-smoking already, pre-empting the July ban.

Needs a real ale or two.

6/10 for now, and rising... hopefully
