The Village Inn, Thurlestone

The above reviews are obviously out of date, and I would assume it was then a very old and traditional Pub. The original building parts are hundreds of years old. So I've missed a treat here ..... my kind of Pub !
However we eat and drank there in September this year. The Village Inn is sited at the southern end of the tiny village of Thurlestone in the South Hams of Devon. Some time back it was taken over by the sizeable Thurlestone Hotel .... which is situated immediately behind the pub.
The bar areas have been "modernised" to typical standards, so are not the cozy, inglenooked, carpeted, and horse-brassed inns of old. It is however spacious, clean, well staffed and friendly.
Due to the hotel connection, the food was excellent and waiting time was minimal ........ we went at lunch times, though booking is always advisable for evenings and busy periods.
Important to some folk is the fact that it was a dog friendly pub, and the meals on menu could be ordered as a take-away! Excellent if you want to stay in your holiday cottage with dogs rather than take your mutt to a busy evening meal-time.
The beers were St. Austell's Doombar and Tribute ...... a fave for us ..... and Palmers Ales ...... a Devon brew. .... also very tasty,
Parking in the village is at a premium, but there is an overflow car park for pub and hotel users nearly opposite. There's no garden, so children will have to be kept close, especially if sitting outside the front on the several bench tables behind a low wall which is road-side.
Also of note is the fact that the pub was the best place we found to get a mobile signal ...... what an excellent excuse to have a pint !

The Royal Oak, Perranwell Station

First visit to this locale. Staying up the lane. Choose my Hol. accommodation to have a walking distance Pub. Googled area and Pub first. Looks run-down outside but early days for new ownwers. If a pub serves good ale (it does, Skinners and St. Austell) I can live with outside shabby rustic. Inside, from my point of view is near on perfect. Very trad beams and carpet. Love it !
Tiny bar, yes, space is limited but it's an OLD cottage style building, not extended to give spacious but out of character eating areas. (Book first to be safe).
Food we had was excellent, £46 for two mains one desert 2 large and 2 med. glasses wine. (£9.60 was for wine) On par with other pubs we have visited. Staff really great, friendly as are the local folk.
Also very dog friendly to the extent a staff member may pop out with a biscuit for your pooch!
This pub will make my hols so much better, and yours too. When you call in, DO say hello to the folk milling around outside and at the bar and feel at home.
A pub like this can motivate me to return to this area, as I will not drive to a pub for meals/drinks.
Staggering home is so much more fun.

Kings Arms, Tregony

Returned to the area this year (2011) and found time has stood still in the village, as hoped! Pub was the same pleasant friendly place, and the food just as good as before. The hand pulled beer was excellent.

The Borough Arms, Lymington

Popped in while walking in the area. Late afternoon (ish) The owner is a very friendly guy, and the serving lady, also. Had a pint of the guest ale, which was excellent.A decent discussion on beers followed!
Only prob was the lack of food on asking, despite being "open all day" I believed this to mean that the pub does no food at all now.
This is a shame, as this quiet little pub was convenient to us and we eat out a lot on our hols. Many folk don't like to drink on an empty belly, so we only had one. The other customers were locals, and we latched on to their chat and had a good laugh with them. Never judge strangers in pubs until you have made the effort yourself!
The pub in general was rather faded in places and I feel could do with a freshen-up, but that's my opinion, though I did love the traditional pub style.
I would like this pub to do more custom with the addition of some kind of food during the day and evenings, and attract families. There is a huge car park that is wasted at present.

I am not going to rate this pub,as I think you should form your own view. That said, I would love to return if in the area, and stop by for a couple of pints AND A MEAL !!!!!
