Yates's, Woking

Awful place with awful, chavvy, bouncers. We tried to get in last night - not my choice but we were meeting family and friends in there for a birthday party - one bouncer stamped my hand and husbands hand, then as we tried to get in another jerk in a suit told my husband he wasn't allowed in because he was drunk - WTF!!!!! He was not drunk. These aresholes on the door seriously need to be changed but the biggest joke of all were the hoodies and 18 year old kids that they were letting in - actually 3 of them fell out of the door in a fight while we were talking to the "bouncer" - but they wouldn't let in a couple of professional 30 somethings!! In hindsight I think we had a lucky escape - if thats the sort of clientele they want then they can have it. I will stick to more classy establishments in future!

The Withies Inn, Compton

Ha ha - Bumble1, I have to agree with your wife - the toilets are spotless. A pet hate of mine are dirty, smelly, toilets in pubs. Love this pub! Went there with hubby today - nice garden , good service and yes - horror! they were wearing uniforms/waistcoats!! OMG!!!!!!!!!!! What a pleasant change to be served by someone who actually wants to be there - not like some of the kids you get behind some town centre bars nowadays. Honestly, you ask for a drink and anyone would have thouhgt you had asked them to run down the road with no clothes on!!!

The Prince of Wales, Shere

Wow! Finally this stunning, picturesque, English village has a pub that is worth visiting! I visited The William Bray today for lunch with my husband and was amazed. Everything about it was fantastic! The refurb has been fantastic, the food was cooked to perfection, there was a good selection of wine and beer, the staff were friendly and approchable and of course the setting is quintessensially English. We will definitely be going back and I would say that the owners of "the other pub in the village" need to buck their ideas up - this new pub is serious competition.

The White Horse, Shere

When oh when will the pub company that run The White Horse read the reviews on this site?????? I got married at St James in Shere and have been coming to The White Horse on and off for about 10 years now. Years ago it used to have such a good reputation - good food, good drinks, good atmosphere & good hospitality. However, on my last visit the staff all have the worst attitude you could imagine and seem to be more interested with having personal chats with each other behind the bar than concentrating on customers. You are also not allowed to sit at the back, top end of the pub now unless you are eating - even if they are empty!! We found this out when we were last there and looking to sit near a fire and a member of staff barked at us "are you going to be eating?" when we replied"no" we were quite abruptly told that these tables were for people eating! As others have said this place will always do well because of its location and I will keep visiting periodically (just on the pff chance it has got a decent manager!) but it could be a complete gold mine with decent staff and abit of a refurb.

The Garibaldi, Knaphill

Not very knowledgable bar staff - I asked if they sold Pinot blush and was advised no, so I ordered a white wine and then saw a drinks menu which I had a look at only to see - Pinot blush!! Music only seems to be on if someone has put money in the jukebox and the main focus seems to be the sports screen! The landlady looked liked she had been dragged through a hedge backwards and as we left we took our glasses to the bar and said goodbye and she could bearly tear herself away from the "locals" and the TV screen to even acknowledge us! Won't be going back!

Ye Olde Ship Inn, Guildford

I visited this pub for the first time today and was pleasantly surprised. The staff were friendly and compared to alot of Surrey pubs it was very reasonably priced. We didn't eat but the menu looked very nice and we will definitely be going back to try the food. The only downside was that it was a cold January afternoon and they had a lovely open fire which wasn't lit. One of the young girls did try to light it after we had been there about 30 minutes but wasn't having much joy. I would say to the managers that on a cold winters day people like to walk into a pub and see a roaring open fire - not to see some poor part timer trying her best to get it lit! Overall though very nice atmosphere!

The Abinger Arms, Abinger Hammer

Have to agree with gutzeit. Went here last weekend having always driven past but never popped in and was very disappointed. The pub was dirty and unwelcoming. There was no-one behind the bar when we came in so a man in the corner (not sure if he was the landlord but didn't move an inch the whole time we were there!) yelled "FRANKIE" and a woman appeared after a couple of minutes. We ordered a pint & a dry white wine and tried to pay with a card but was told they only accept cards for orders of 10 or more - fair enough so we asked if we could leave the card behind the bar, which she was unwilling to do - luckily we had enough cash for the round - just! The wine was sweet - either that or it had been open for weeks as it didn't strike me as a wine drinkers pub! and my husband hated the beer. "Frankie" then came down the stairs with a greyhound who took up then entire sofa in an already small pub and then someone else appeared from upstairs with two cats!! That was enough for me - I was just waiting for Rolf Harris to appear!! These people seem to only care about their regulars and animals and clearly if your face doesn't fit you're not welcome!!
Such a shame as it is in such an idyllic location and could have such potential
