worth a look in for big sporting events as big screens and a decent atmosphere. Any other time I would avoid like the plague - crap beer, expensive and appears to be the watering hole of choice for the Balham chinless wonder society.

The Tattershall Castle, Embankment
Lets not go over the top ladies & gents - it's pleasant enough for chewing on an ale on deck if the weather is good but dont really care for the inside as it is a tad grubby and clustrophobic as the last post mentions. Would not touch this place with a barge pole on Fri/Sat as it fills up with surburban folk who get the overland into Waterloo - you know who you are! However, am surprised no one has mentioned it but the comedy nights held here on Mondays (during winter months) can be a fun alternative night out.

The George, Great Portland Street
shame - it burnt down yesterday. Thankfully no major casualties.

okay, not bad for a spot of pub grub and a pint but they could turn the lights on as it has a dark and dingy feel to it. lacks atmosphere - filled with the old war veteran type sitting wheezing on a woodbine looking into space vacantly.

nice beer garden in the summer but that really is about it. Unfortunately full of under age drinkers who cant hold their top deck. The inside of the pub is cramped and pokey and the phrase 'a bit of a hole' sums it up nicely

Martin - it's definitely the Spread Eagle that you're thinking of on the high street..

Dimly lit cocktail bar underneath Roku, nice decor and cosy atmosphere but it does get busy and finding a seat can be problem - so book a table. Great place for a date - you're sure to get laid. However if you're looking for a pint and a game of darts this isnt the place.

The Crown and Sceptre, Fitzrovia
get the baggy jeans on and get yourself a silly haircut and you'll fit right in here - just dont forget to bring the latest edition of Face. However a good place in the summer for a lunchtime pint on the pavement, catching a few rays and checking out the trim. Not known for its cask ales, more of a continental lager joint (staropramen, leffe etc), clearly to service the media kids. If hoxton fins arent your bag - try the yorkshire grey up the road - less pretentious.

one of my favourites in the area - great for a lunchtime pint, fag and game of darts. Never tried the food, colleagues have and pass off as 50/50. Strolled passed the other day and it looks like they are finally tarting it up.

The Hope, Tottenham Court Road
very small boozer, friendly locals, good for a post work heart starter but does get packed quite quickly. In summary, does what it says on the tin.

good food, good selection of continental lager/bitter (Timothy Taylor), tend to have a good time when I come here. Staff and management are also very attentive. If you dont get a table it can get a bit cramped but not too much of a problem. Good for Sunday lunch.

lots of character, good selection of ales and pleasant atmosphere. It's off the beaten track so need to be an orienteering champ to find this place! As a historic pub it is on the tourist map, so be prepared to "bite your tongue" when large groups from across the pond descend on the tavern - one of the reasons why they get away with charging the prices they do. Nonetheless worth a visit if in the area.

Have always liked this pub and visit fairly regularly but been a little bit disappointed on recent visits. Is this down to new management? The food is okay if not a little overpriced and agree with previous comments on the service being average - always takes forever to get served. However they have a good range of beers and a decent wine list to get stuck into.

Awful - this was once an okay youngs boozer where you could enjoy a grog and some nosebag. Admittedly there was the odd local pikey from the estate up the road (giro in pocket), half cut looking for a rumble with an unsuspecting punter but none the less a solid public house. Now it's just a pants identikit bar packed to the rafters with braying rahs smoking mummies sobrani's and supping on chablis - all I can say is" Tarquin, Arabella, Algenon..red jeans down, loafers off...lets skull an anal pint..raaaahhhhhh"!!!

decent boozer, good selection of grog on tap and the scran does what it says on the tin - lets face it fellas they're not looking for a michelin star! one gripe is that service is pretty poor and not helped by incompetent aussie/eastern european bar stuff. good quiz though..

The Clarence, Balham
this pub gets my vote - welcome addition to Balham in my eyes. Great selection of beers and like most before enjoyed the Budvar Dark. Tasty food along with attentive service and ambience make this a pub hard to fault...oh and they also sell aspalls cider - love it! keep it up fellas - I will be back.
