The Woodman, Highgate

i have a bit of a love/hate arrangement with this pub. it really does change your opinion every time you go...The beer is decent without being brilliant, and the atmosphere is generally good but needs something to bring it to life.

agree with the most recent comments about certain surly staff, but the majority are quite hospitable again. (funny you mention the nose pierced girl - i'm likewise yet to see a smile. it must be torture for her working there!). they really did go downhill at the beginning of this year, but certainly seen improvement recently.

Winchester Pub Hotel, Highgate

This pub is horrendous and it's a massive shame because it could be turned it to one of the best pubs in London. In terms of design and history it has everything going for it but you go in there and it smells and the decor looks unkept.

The beer-garden may as well not bother because it's always empty and unappealling, again it could be given a face-lift.

It's probably about time the management move on because this could truly be made in to a great pub. I guess the small hardcore will keep it ticking over but it should really be attracting a larger more varied crowd.

...and clean the bloody beer pipes. the beer tastes terrible!

The Crown and Sceptre, Fitzrovia

The Crown and Sceptre is always a great meeting venue just off the beaten track of the more prominent pubs in the west end.

A decent range of reasonably priced drinks and the service is good and bar-staff polite. After work is when the crowds gather but you can find occasions when there is room to sit down and enjoy.

As with most central pubs they can be a bit stalin-esque with you are drinking off the pavements (even when a car hasn't passed for about an hour) but i guess this is council policy! decent pub overall
