The Earl of Chatham, Woolwich

Bands are now a fixed feature on Thursday and the brilliant Florenzo, who makes Hendrix' tunes his own, is a regular as well as Be Sharp and Purple who are a Bay City Rollers (LoL - not really, but guess which band) triubute.

Beer is Youngs and London Pride, both kept very well, and an extensive range of other stuff. Staff are all friendly and efficient. I've got used to scaling the stairs to use the toilets, but at weekends they have a chap/chapess who sells lollipops and smelly stuff when you want to wash your hands. Us blokes call ours 'the willie watcher'.

After 11, you can tell a first time customer by the plaintive wail of "HOW MUCH?????".

Devoid of character but full of characters. Bus spotters, singing stripping fat pensioner, Harold Shipman lookalike....

This pub won the Evening Standard pub of the year competition at least twice. Then it was a busy pub with excellent catering. Brilliant lunches and sandwiches and congenial proprietors and bar staff.

But that was 30 years ago.

It had been going downhill for years when it finally expired last year.

Reopens today. Minor changes to lighting & decor. Hopefully they'll have a door policy of some sort.

Comments prior to April this year are out of date due to total refurb. Anyway Jorge, they have sorted out the door policy. Yes it kicks off occasionally but it is always swiftly dealt with and nobody else needs to get mixed up in it. Bar staff are lovely, most customers are nice and friendly. Food (available til 8)is excellent and reasonably priced.

Sunday bands are great- specially Be Sharp.

Downside? Bogs are up very steep tall staircase and the clocks in the tills are 3 minutes fast (important as prices go up 25% at the end of normal hours).

This pub went on going on downhill until it finally got shut down (the first pub ever to get an ASBO).

Probably won't ever re-open.
