The Grand Junction Arms, Bulbourne

oh dear oh dear.......BOATER STEW sign sat outside the door. I cant believe that the place would encourage these hat wearing, unhygenic, dirty creaures and their flea ridden mutts on rope into the premises! A nice big place-modern in its interior and classy with its style but full of stinking water creatures making the palce look like an up market homeless shelter. Ale wasnt very good either but i would imagine they only sell cheap cider to the locals in a bid to get drun k ASAP. Shame because it has the potential to be a great place and a nice eating establishment but is let down but its choice to allow vermin into its fine hollows.A real shame.......

Red Lion, Marsworth

finally a pleasant country pub in this fine village!! A delicious London Pride and a good although slightly unenthusiastic service. Lot of locals some of which were obviously of th boating fraternity judging by their attire and general hygiene conditions but friendly non the less. Food menu looked sparse which isnt necessarily a bad thing as they obviously focus on the drinks side of the business. Overall it is a lovely old beamed pub eith alot of character and a beautiful garden. Best pub in the village but not what i would call a super pub by any means

The Anglers Retreat, Marsworth

Better than the other pub they own. Immediately after entering the smell of frying oil hits like a smack in the face. However the interior, although dated and dull, did seem somewhat homely-like an old persons retreat. The ale was very good-a decent pint of London Pride and the service was good despite the volumes of people. Was intrigued to see the menu after stupidly eating at their other premises and was suprised to find a homemade, laminated(and sticky) menu offering everyday food at a reasonable price. Not sure about the outdated events guide on the reverse (advertising last years new years party) Nothing too exciting however but at least it they werent robbing you for food. Overall this was a good place-would probably come back but only for the London Pride and certainly not for the atmosphere

I agree with bucking fastard-a neon open sign which would suit an american burger chain immediately gives a bad impression and after visiting i can only judge that it also gives a correct impression. I have drank in many GK pubs before but the ale was foul, cloudy and warm which when accompanied by service from a 40something woman who has no idea what shes doing it results in a bad experience. Much to my better judgement i agreed to eat at my wifes request-oh and how i wish i had followed my gut instinct!!food service was slow despite not being very busy and the food was bordering on the rancid. Im not a complaining person by nature and i wa about to do so but i was so angry at the whole experience i bit my lip this time to avoid a heted confrontation. I last came here a couple of years ago and found it to be a friendly although rather cold pub with a mediterranean menu which was both reasonably priced and fresh-the complete opposite to the fayre presented here now. I hear that it is currently owned by the owners of the pub down the road so we went there to sample what they have to offer in the hope of getting a decent pint.I have also reviewed this pub-The Anglers Retret
