The Holman Clavel Inn, Culmhead
Something must be done! If pubs such as this fail, then the land might be green but pleasant it won't be. The very fabric of English society is threatened.
19 Sep 2010 02:44
The Lamb and Flag, Blagdon Hill
One would look west of the quantocks, to williton and watchet, and across the channel to Llantwit Major
19 Feb 2009 02:12
The Lamb and Flag, Blagdon Hill
The Bristol channel, and thus Wales, might and I say might, be visible from here. I will have to see for myself.
11 Jan 2009 19:50
Boat and Anchor Inn, Bridgwater
Food pub under a motorway. It is next to the canal, but the garden level is below the canal so no view of the one redeeming feature
11 Jan 2009 19:25
Not bad for Minehead. If for some reason you find yourself in Minehead, e.g. you've upset an angry and vengeful god: you may as well walk out to this place and have a beer.
11 Jan 2009 19:17
Don't take my comment about being tired of St Austell Ales the wrong way. This is best traditional pub in Taunton.
1 Dec 2008 02:24
The Lamb and Flag, Blagdon Hill
I'll believe views to the Quantocks, or maybe even the Poldens, but to suggest views to the Mendips is topping it the knob.
1 Dec 2008 02:19
I was wondering if things had changed but it seems they are the same here.
9 Oct 2008 02:59
The last time I was in here it was an "all day carvery" type of place. I only wanted a drink at the bar and it seemed to spawn fear and suspicion.
9 Oct 2008 02:52
I've upped my rating after 2 recent visits. Ordinarily I don't have food or wine at a pub but I did at this one and had two very enjoyable meals.
9 Oct 2008 02:41
There's a very nice family running the place, two ales on the pumps, and a friendly Saturday afternoon crowd.
17 Sep 2008 20:42
Echo Music Bar, Bristol International Airport
They've got Butcombe on the pump. Standard airport pub.
21 Aug 2008 16:35
Perched high on the quantocks this place could be great. But there's something a bit lacking and I don't know what.
21 Aug 2008 16:26
Sorry about the previous post, the reviews for this pub are listed under the section for the former name of Harpoon Louis
21 Aug 2008 16:21
WTF...where are all the previous reviews to this pub? I can't abide that all the previous reviews and ratings are gone.
13 Aug 2008 16:29
"yoyo, what a tosser - why not visit the pubs you comment on?"
I didn't comment on the pub, I commented on 3 suspicious reviews.
"Are you a bitter owner of one of the less friendly pubs in the area as you left a rating without even mentioning whether or not you had actually visited the
hostalery."
I have not rated this pub, nor am I a pub owner.

The Harvest Moon, North Newton
A major refurbishment on the inside. Dark polished wood, arrays of wine bottles, mirrors, zofting blondes. Everything you don't expect in a somerset village pub
31 Jul 2008 18:46
Am I the only one that finds St. Austell beers a bit tiresome? They could really use a guest beer.
31 Jul 2008 18:18
No ales available. They don't even have pumps, or any codgers anymore.
22 Jul 2008 21:49
I had to lower my rating after the last visit. The ale was good enough, but they still have roaring drunks at the bar with consant angry conversation with every other fcuk or fcukin' or tawt or cnut punction by wha violent action he's going to take. Finally a cab came to take this sorry drunk away, but the staff just laughed it off.
The have a sign in pub telling you what to do ... no swearing etc.
It is that kind of place.
22 Jul 2008 21:44
How did I miss this place? Who knew there was a friendly little pub so close to the the tube, with 8 different ales on? If I worked in the area, this would be my local.
9 Jul 2008 22:12
It lost more than its mojo, it lost its name. The sign says: The Globe
9 Jul 2008 21:31
Otter and Cotleigh on the pumps. The one bar, "The Belfry" seemed for the eaters. The lounge bar was for drinkers, pool players, and fruit machinists.
Just a regular pub.
3 Jul 2008 18:22
The Black Horse, Clapton in Gordano
This is a great old pub. The stone walls, stone floor, and low beams in a perfectly proportioned space make you immediately feel like you've entered upon one of the great country pubs. The lively number of people in there at a weekday lunchtime lets you know everyone thinks so as well. But it wasn't overly crowded, everyone that wanted a place to sit seemed to get one. The crowd seemed a mix of regulars and pub explorers.
The menu is appropriatley simple and the service is cheerful and quick.
Why isn't this place my local?
The only drawback is that, as others have pointed out, that despite have 5 or 6 ales available there didn't seem to be anything intriguing.
I went with a Butcombe, always enjoyable but available everywhere in that part of Somerset. Spitfire, Courage etc while not being dreadful are even more dull. However, I didn't want to leave so we stayed for another round.
3 Jul 2008 18:17
Not a bad pub, but nothing to go out of your way for. Typical Wadsworth selection on the ales zzzzzz
It seemed supported well enough by non threatening locals.
The town of Ilminster itself is a quick visit and this pub is right in the centre.
3 Jul 2008 17:59
3 ratings and all of them 10's, at time of writing.
The first two reviewers never reviewed anything else on BITE, but both of them were inspired by this pub to register and then make one, and only one pub. review. All within one day of each other.
27 Jun 2008 15:00
We had a decent lunch in here the other day and the food was ordinary. The landlords seemed nice enough, and the pub itself had some atmosphere.
27 Jun 2008 14:51
The Queens Head Hotel, Minehead
Good beer selection, but the pub is just too big for me to really enjoy it.
28 May 2008 14:40
3 well kept local ales, a local cider, amiable regulars ready to chat with a stranger (no blaring music here - just conversation), attentive & knowledgable landlord, warm fire on a cold rainy day, dog friendly, this place is ticking all the check boxes.
28 May 2008 14:30
I blame all the spelling and grammar mistakes in my previous review to the "bridgwater effect"
28 May 2008 14:15
Avoid. The pub structure itself has decent bones and could possible be turned into a place with some sort of charm. However, they have failed to make the best of it decor wise, and had blaring music in the early afternoon, and the customers in there looked stupid, really stupid. Even by Bridgwater standards these guys looked stupid.
28 May 2008 14:13
The Harvest Moon, North Newton
The village hall has opened its bar to the public so that there is someplace to drink. I found it very, very enjoyable and I applaud the the community effort.
28 May 2008 14:05
The Pitcher and Piano, Taunton
"This is one of the best bars in Taunton. Fact."
That may be true, Emilina, but Taunton doesn't have many bars worth visiting. This place is just passable.
28 May 2008 13:55
This was decent bar, not pub, but it seems to have it mojo a bit. No real complaint, but it seemed a to have lost a bit of its liveliness.
28 May 2008 13:50
I can only assume the CAMRA folks have this pub confused with someplace else.
15 May 2008 22:57
The landlord and landlady are friendly folks, as is the dog. A beer in the garden on a sunny day is real treat.
15 May 2008 22:47
I returned recently and still rate this place up there. Good selection of ale, engaging landlord/staff, friendly locals and good looking dogs.
15 May 2008 21:51
I suppose I should mention that it still manages to hang on to 2nd place though in the Watchet Pub League Table.
15 May 2008 21:47
2 years later I return and I'm trying to remember what I ever saw in the place.
Music was far too loud. Blasting shitty dance music at 5:30 on a weekday?
15 May 2008 21:45
The Lord Poulett Arms, Hinton St George
Food was excellent and quite reasonable. I seldom ever say that about a pub. Drinkers are quite welcome here.
The village is worth poking about as well.
15 May 2008 21:42
The Bell Inn, Creech St Michael
I hear the Riverside is open. Maybe they should get their own listing in Bite.
7 May 2008 22:47
So does that mean we won't be getting mad cow disease from this pub?
7 May 2008 22:42
The two times I was in there it was unpleasant. The other two pubs on the same corner are much better. A bit ironic with cricket just coming on.
7 May 2008 22:37
We just received a flyer in the mail from the Kings Arms. Voucher for a free drink, pudding etc.
1 May 2008 19:17
Royal Artillery Arms, Highbridge
They had 8 pumps, and 6 different ales on when I was in there. The landlord and other customers are a friendly lot too. There's not much you can ask of a pub.
1 May 2008 19:13
The Dunstan House Inn, Burnham on Sea
The staff was very friendly and working hard and plenty of Young's beers available. The pub itself is too large and too restaurant-ish for me.
1 May 2008 19:05
This pub had 3 ales on, not too bad. They were from the Princeton brewery and I had the "Jail Ale".
What were the names of those horrible blue creatures from cartoon back in the 80's..Smurfs? Well if you're a fan of smurfs they have a display full of little plastic smurfs. It was smurfs, right? Smurfs?
1 May 2008 19:03
The Locomotive Inn, Newton Abbot
Well I didn't meet any females, but this was very good pub nonethless. Most villages or towns would do well to have a pub like this.
28 Apr 2008 19:34
The Dartmouth Inn, Newton Abbot
They had at least three of their own beers available the other day. Good beer and a proper beer drinking atomosphere.
28 Apr 2008 19:32
A top pub without any beer? Yes the cider selection alone makes it one of the regional greats in my opinion. Isn't the West Country supposed to have lots of such places? Sadly, it does not. If you don't care for cider you have your choice of many "wines" such as Elderflower, Strawberry, Parsip, etc.
Nothing fancy going on here, low wooden benches, tables and stools. Flooring a mix of parquet in some spots, concrete in others.
I was waiting at the bar to get another drink and I overheard one bloke say to his mate: That's it, I'm moving to Newton Abbot.
28 Apr 2008 16:20
The Farmers Arms, Combe Florey
We had a nice lunch in here the other day. 3 ales, good food, seats by the fire. The garden looked pretty nice too, it will be nice to enjoy a pint there on a summer evening, streamside, next to a lovely thatched roof pub.
28 Apr 2008 15:55
The Harvest Moon, North Newton
I decided to check it out. The pub is available from Punch if you want to make a difference and run your own pub. Do it!
28 Apr 2008 15:53
I keep walking by and looking for this massage parlour but don't see it.
25 Apr 2008 14:04
What a great pub for enjoying your an ale. Sit by a fire, watch the dogs, drinkers, diners, and choose from at least 5 ales. No pumps, the staff goes in the back room to fetch your pint. The current ales have their badges on a pole behind the bar, the coming soon ales have their badges on another pole.
You know you are in a proper country pub when you have to head outside for the gents. In case you get too worried on your way there the fresh, festive paint job will cheer you on your way.
Staff was very good, and so are the locals. Pubs this good are too rare, yet they make it seem so easy.
21 Apr 2008 14:50
A nice enough pub. It seems well supported by lively locals. The public bar had a phony electric glow fireplace, the lounge bar a proper fire going. 3 ales.
21 Apr 2008 14:39
I've checked back and this pub is worth a stop. It is a typical small country pub: simple menuy and choice of 3 ales and some farmhouse ciders in a friendly environment. Plenty of parking too.
18 Apr 2008 16:28
Has the dust settled yet what kind of pub this is going to be? When I was in a couple of weeks ago the mix of customers seemed a bit unsettled and the entire spectrum of drinker was present. That's a good thing of course, but will such diversity be maintained over time?
They had 6? traditional ciders available, but priced too high for the stereotypical cider drinker. They also had 4 local ales on.
The service was spot on. I'm still admiring how well a barman handled a difficult customer.
I'm giving this pub a good rating for now.
18 Apr 2008 16:10
We were in here the other day, still a good place for a meal and a variety of ales.
7 Apr 2008 17:58
Maybe I spoke too soon. The service is good enough and they do have 3 ales on, but my last visit saw too many yobs.
5 Apr 2008 18:43
If the weather is nice, you can enjoy a drink in the garden. In that sense, it really is an oasis. As pointed out below, no ales.
29 Mar 2008 18:23
Yes, I drove by today and the sign still says it is closed.
29 Mar 2008 18:14
This place was a find on a rainy Saturday lunch time.
A good town centre pub that strikes just the right chords. Traditional, but not too much Olde Worlde Charme. Warm, but not overpowering fire going, 3 kinds of Palmers on tap, varied pub menu, a bit crowded but if you were willing to wait a bit a table would open up. The kind of place that makes both a good boozer and good food destination. It isn't spectacular in any way, but it hard to fault.
29 Mar 2008 18:07
The Fiddler Den Haag, Den Haag
This one was a bit of a suprise. Usually when you see a large English pub in a continental city, in the very heart of the tourist district, it is better to walk on by. But as other posters have pointed out, they do their own beers here and the staff is friendly.
24 Mar 2008 11:50
Bristol and Exeter Inn, Bridgwater
If you had to choose one pub to represent Bridgwater, this would be it.
23 Mar 2008 18:08
I liked the place. There was a fire going, a selection of ales and whiskies, and a friendly landlord.
19 Mar 2008 21:00
The Pride of Spitalfields, Shoreditch
I meant to point out what was on the pumps:
Doom Bar
Brewers Gold
ESB
London Prid
19 Mar 2008 20:57
The Pride of Spitalfields, Shoreditch
I felt like I was in a small town, back street, local known for it's ales. Is this London, just a somosa throw away from Brick Lane?
19 Mar 2008 20:54
There's potential here, but no ales and the want over 4 pounds for a lager. Shame
19 Mar 2008 20:48
The Princess of Shoreditch, Old Street
This area is full of interesting places. This isn't one of them.
19 Mar 2008 20:35
This place had 8? ales on, people singing along with the girl playing piano, friendly harmless drunks, locals, folks with maps, kriek on tap, dogs, and when some locals arrived the others would sing their name, etc.
16 Mar 2008 18:11
The Merry Monk, Monkton Heathfield
Another large roadside food oriented pub with so so ale and a bit lacking in atmosphere.
12 Mar 2008 12:58
I hear conflicting reports about this pub from talking with others. I've been in there several times now and I haven't had any problems or objections with the clientele. Calling them rough would be to They have some real ales that I drank without complaint, indeed I go back for more. The interiour is well worn, and another reviewer called it an "old-fashioned town pub" and that fits the bill. When you consider all the other pubs in Taunton town centre this is really one of the better ones.
8 Mar 2008 19:41
I was impressed with the beer choice yet again. It is worth investigating.
8 Mar 2008 19:22
The Rose and Crown, Cannington
The reviews below mine sum the situation up nicely. If you're in the area, be sure to get a drink here. They don't do food.
7 Mar 2008 11:20
Nice enough staff, the garden looks like it might be pleasant in good weather.
7 Mar 2008 11:17
That's too bad. I've had food here, a couple of years ago, and really enjoyed it.
7 Mar 2008 11:13
I think that review sums it all up. However, I will add that the service was decent enough.
7 Mar 2008 10:54
The Ship and Shovell, Charing Cross
The one side isn't always open, but you must have a drink in both halves to count as visiting. However, I don't think you need to purchase a pint in both sides. Drinking half of it in one side and half in the other should suffice.
29 Feb 2008 21:21
Gordon's Wine Bar, Charing Cross
If more wine bars were like this, more beer drinkers would go to them.
29 Feb 2008 21:18
This pub is still a must for those exploring the Quantocks.
25 Feb 2008 23:21
Convenient to the mump, with some ales on tap. The landlady and locals are friendly enough. Worth stopping for.
25 Feb 2008 23:18
The Cross Keys, Norton Fitzwarren
This pub was part of some pubco's "Chef and Brewer" concept. It was corporate a bit phoney, but they did keep 4 different ales on, and the food decent if a bit overprice, and fires going in the winter. But sometime in the last few months they a did refurb changed the look from country food pub to Big Estate Eatery. Hundreds of houses within walking distance are going up and I guess they don't want to pub to be too upscale.
25 Feb 2008 23:10
Here's another pub that I thought had reviews before.
This seems like a nice enough village pub, with the stone, beams, fire place, and some ales etc. Worth stopping for.
19 Feb 2008 12:30
The Bird in Hand, Bishop's Lydeard
I thought this place had reviews before?
Of the three pubs in Bishops Lydeard, this one is the most basic and least interest to the passing ale drinker.
19 Feb 2008 12:28
The Worlds End, Bradford On Tone
I meant to add that the place was all about serving meals.
19 Feb 2008 12:26
The Worlds End, Bradford On Tone
Big busy roadside pub, not a place for the serious pub explorer.
19 Feb 2008 12:25
The sign outside said "roaring fire" and that was enough to pull me in. The beer was good too.
14 Feb 2008 20:02
My experience was friendly enough, but I did find the public bar dreary and in need of some sprucing up.
There's a bookmaker across the street and you can find all the betting slips you need right there at the bar. Make of that what you will.
14 Feb 2008 19:59
The King William IV, Curry Rivel
I had a positive experience in this pub one afternoon.
14 Feb 2008 19:55
The Rose and Crown, Nether Stowey
Open fire, porter on pumps, nice way to spend a winter afternoon.
14 Feb 2008 19:24
I like the smoker's shelter. It may be the nicest one in Somerset.
9 Jan 2008 19:13
I've been in here since the new owners arrived. The menu is simpler, but that's about the only change I noticed. I think pubs should keep food simple in the first place. New owners seem nice enough, but the beer selection seemd diminished. I'll check back to make sure.
9 Jan 2008 19:03
I haven't experienced any pub atmosphere in here, it seems like a restaurant and only a restaurant. They generally have 3 ales, but too often they seem bland. A real pity as this should be a great village local.
9 Jan 2008 18:45
I went to watch football in here the other day and a staffer told me the don't have Sky anymore.
9 Jan 2008 18:32
In the warmer weather the beer garden is well worth a visit. The trick is to get a seat as high as possible in on the terraces, to give a view over the hedge.
6 Dec 2007 19:08
I tried this place again, on someone else's suggestion, and I've upped my rating slightly. The beer was better, the atmosphere a little more lively, and some normal human beings were having drinks friendly conversations. The place did have that big screen with dreadful music videos. If the landlords read this, don't think that means get better music videos. It means stop feeling obligated to have something on the TV all the time and focus on being a friendly local where people talk to each other.
6 Dec 2007 18:58
With all the great reviews I was a little bit disappointed. The ales selection seemed a bit mundane and as alehouses puts it: the carpet seemed to deaden any rogue pub atmosphere. All in all, a nice place to stop for a meal after the nightmares of Clark's Village
6 Dec 2007 18:50
The Harvest Moon, North Newton
I've been walking in that area a couple times since then and the ale hasn't been very good. I've met some nice people in there. The place isn't going to win any beauty awards, but my previous visits were enjoyable.
12 Nov 2007 19:46
Greyhound Inn, Staple Fitzpaine
This pub seems to do a strong restaurant business, but I'm not sure why. The food was good, but not great. I much preferred the bar and the ale.
12 Nov 2007 19:40
The Lamb and Flag, Blagdon Hill
Decent beer selection, friendly attentive staff, nice bar for hanging about, all adds up to a pub worth stopping at.
12 Nov 2007 19:34
The Brewers Arms, South Petherton
This a well named pub with a decent beer selection that must rotate, as there is a chalk board showing the status of various ales on tap, those that are settling, and the scheduled deliveries.
1 Nov 2007 10:49
Certainly a bar, not a pub. I had a pilsener but did try checking out the wine list but failed to see why it calls itself a "wine bar"
Staff seemed nice enough.
1 Nov 2007 10:47
If this pub had some real ales, more than Bass, it would be a great little stop.
1 Nov 2007 10:40
My original postive experience has been replace by some less than positive ones regarding the clientele.
1 Nov 2007 10:29
We ate here the other night and the food was pretty good. The ales were Badger and Fursty Ferret. The building itself could be an old country pub, but as previous writer mentioned it completely surrounded by the modern shops, superstores, and car parks of the shopping center by the motorway junction
31 Oct 2007 16:40
This is a very large pub with a food orentation. There is smallish area by the bar that seems a little cozier than the sprawling restaurant. Otter seems the ale of choice. The wines are on tap. It seems like it must be to big to be a local, but at closing time on a recent weeknight there were several tables of drinkers, encompassing all generations, and everyone seemed freindly enough. There was only one lone drinker at the bar, I didn't notice any barstools.
31 Oct 2007 15:35
I liked the dog that greeted me, and the staff seemed eager enough to pour me a pint on a busy darts night. The fellow next to me at the bar might of been drunk, or he might just be a natural drooler. The rest of the crowd was busy playing darts, or in deep thought at the bar.
31 Oct 2007 15:29
The Victory Inn, Allerford Crossing
The Allerford Inn is open. The refurbishment was almost total. It reminds a lot of some bars in town, rather than a country pub.
23 Aug 2007 18:51
Worth visting for the decor. When I was they had the Porter on tap, making it well worth the trouble.
26 Jun 2007 17:59
I was walking past and decided any pub name Bishop's Finger was worth a visit. Not bad if you happen to be going by, but don't make effor to seek it out.
26 Jun 2007 17:56
I had good service, I enjoyed the selection of cask ales, and appreciated the low beamed ceilings, wood floors, etc. I agree with the previous comments about the food being good, but overpriced. It is certainly worth checking out for a drink or two.
26 Jun 2007 11:18
I stopped in here early one evening. The service was fine and the refurbishment is nice enough. They have cask ales, but they are seemingly kept at room temperature and as it was hot day day the beer was unpleasantly warm. Of the 4 other people at the bar, 3 of them couldn't make sentences without using f***ing in every phrase.
26 Jun 2007 11:08
Once you are inside a Wetherspoons they are all the same, this one is no exception.
20 Jun 2007 12:19
A nice pub with a good selection of ales, friendly staff and clientele.
20 Jun 2007 12:18
The Half Moon Inn, Stoke St Mary
I had an afternoon pint here the other day. Large traiditional pub with a large garden and couple of ales.
19 Jun 2007 12:01
I wouldn't call this a terrible pub, but I wouldn't send anybody there either. It was listed in the Good Pub Guide (wrongly in my opinion) but has since dropped out.
14 Jun 2007 18:09
The Rising Sun Inn, West Bagborough
This pub changed hands in April. The new landlord seems welcoming, and so do the locals. It is well worth walking down off the hill for. (it's only halfway down)
28 Apr 2007 11:08
The Harvest Moon, North Newton
I've stopped in here twice now. Wednesday lunch and they had live music! The landlady is very welcoming and it is great stop for the canal.
28 Apr 2007 11:04
Not in Dulverton, but right at the Tarr Steps.
Well worth investigating if out walking in that part of the Exmoor. They open early-ish for coffe or tea's etc. In good weather the garden is very nice with a view of the glen.
11 Apr 2007 19:48
The Victory Inn, Allerford Crossing
This pub is temporarily closed.
It will open in Summer 2007 after undergoing a 250,000 refurbishment and be re-named the "Allerford Inn" According to the anserwing machine.
29 Mar 2007 12:01
Is it a bar or a pub? How do you draw the distinction? Is it a matter of decor? Clientele? Drinks selection? I don't know I could write the rules. But that doesn't stop me from declaring this one more of bar than a pub.
If you want to have a drink in Taunton this is certainly one of the better spots. This would be a fine bar/pub anywhere. However, being in Taunton that means it floats to the top.
We've had lunch here several times. The food is always good, but make sure you get some fries as they are the best in Taunton. They could pass for fries in Flanders.
28 Mar 2007 21:37
I was back again this winter after walking on Exmoor. This place is really worth seeking out. We finally tried some food at lunchtime and it was very good.
28 Mar 2007 10:16
We stop in here every few months a we really should visit more often. Had good beer and a good time on each visit.
28 Mar 2007 10:09
Certainly the best of the Porlock pubs. I think the area around the bar can compete with anything. The rest of the pub sprawls a bit gives those parts a "big pub" feel, but the garden seems very inviting. The people running the place are friendly and welcoming.
8 Mar 2007 12:39
The Rising Sun Inn, West Bagborough
Friendly staff, good food and good beer. It is a shame this place suffered a fire. The rebuild is well done, but it will take ages to look worn enough to think you're in country pub.
There's no car park by the pub, nor in the rest of the vilage as near as I could tell. This is a great pub to visit on foot if you are prowling about the Quantocks.
8 Mar 2007 12:12
Camra seems to reward pubs with at least 4 real ales available and this pub fits that bill. It also had a toasty fire going and a charming landlady. Give it a try.

Unfortunately the 4 very positive reviews on Jan 25-26 seem a bit suspicious. Two by anon, and the other two by registered users that have never before posted a review, nor ever posted another, two months later. It looks like the landlord called his friends, or employees, and had them put up good reviews. The result is that the pub comes off looking bad.

The Three Horseshoes, Wiveliscombe
We had dinner and even had an extra drink at this pub. We enjoyed the food, the drink, the landlord, and the atmosphere.
20 Feb 2007 16:45
I havent' tried the food, but I would like to spend some more time here by the fire.
20 Feb 2007 16:43
We had lunch here sometime ago and it was delicious and in a great setting. I have no idea what the evenings are like.

The Farmers Arms, Combe Florey
We had an enjoyable lunch here last November, served by a friendly woman that I believe was the land lady.
20 Feb 2007 16:39
The codgers and landlord are friendly and welcoming at this local boozer.
4 Jan 2007 15:12
On a weekday afternoon this was the warm happening heart of Wivvy. Just down the street from the cold empty Hart.
4 Jan 2007 15:04
The times I've been they've had 4 barrels behind the bar and Otter on the handpump. Since they make no effort cool the barrels, these might be better in the cooler months.
Large pub, large screen for Ford Football Sunday.

The Rose and Crown, Huish Episcopi
A very pleasant and friendly local. A place that seems to have long heeded the advice of "Keep it Simple" and don't forget to try the local cider.

A brand new pub near the Crown & Sceptre. The exterior holds some promise. The name "Cricketers" and the prints of Victorian cricketers on the walls seem a bit at odds with the rest of the interiour decor, possibly described as Frank Lloyd Wright meets National Health Service lounge. What look is this place going for? It just doesn't work visually. However, everything is shiny and new and that has to count for something.
3 pumps for ales: Courage, Duechars, and one to be named later. The wine was adequate, and the rest of bar selection seemed standard.
The staff was efficient and friendly.
The large FLW menu on the wall offered panini's, sandwiches, coffees, cream teas, and hinted at tapas.

A friendly enough country pub. It's near a cider farm, but I saw Blackthorne's on tap. I asked if that was the only cider they had. She offered me a local "bit of rough" from a jug. It was worth asking for, but I was happy to get some local rough stuff I forgot to notice what ales were on the pumps. We got seats by the very hot woodstove. I thought it too warm but my companion wanted to be toasty so was quite happy. Large carpark across the road. The have a passenger van with the the pub logo. Perhaps they meet the steam train in Washford? I should have asked?

Very good food, clearly a pub and not a restaurant. We came for lunch, though busy but we got a table by the fire. The Notley Burger was hearty and even the onion tart and salad was filling enough on a winters day. If you just want drinks, no problem either. I'm adding it to my countryside walking rotation.

This is the pub in Dunster where you to drink when you find out your missus is sleeping with your best friend.
26 Dec 2006 21:26
This is the pub in Dunster you go to drink with your friend.
26 Dec 2006 21:26
This is the pub in Dunster where you take your mother on Mothering Sunday.
26 Dec 2006 21:25
A typical Wetherspoons, and for those that don't know what a typical Wetherspoons means it means drink somewhere else. If you must go, go at 10am on a weekday because you can get a drink fairly quickly.
26 Dec 2006 21:12
I went in for a quiet pint one Saturday afternoon.
The service was friendly and the pub has a pleasing interiour and seating area. The one draw back was 4 teenage boys watching horse racing and their phones were constantly beeping as they were texting. Placing bets? Anyway, they also controlled the remote making me think they had the fool blessings of the landlord.
20 Dec 2006 16:32
We had dinner on a weekday. I found the food very good: salmon tartare starter, goose on a bed of celeriac.
They had 4 barrels of real ale behind the bar and the service was friendly. It did seem tending more towards restaurant, but they did have barstools at the bar and an area that seemed more for drinking than dining so I would still stop in for a drinks only evening.
13 Dec 2006 11:43
According to drinkers at other pubs this place was a proper country boozer until refurbed with an emphasis on food and the local regulars now drinking at the Lamb and Flag in Blagdon Hill. Nonetheless I had an enjoyable pint there one afternoon. However, it did seem like a restaurant emphasis and not a place for dogs, farmers, and muddy boots. Pity.
10 Dec 2006 14:49
I went in one Saturday afternoon and they were pretty busy in the food area and the cosy bar area. Warm fires, friendly service, and lots of people talking about horses. Worth a visit.

The Naval and Military, Taunton
It was broad daylight, around noon on a Saturday, with lots of people shopping on the streets. I figured I may as well risk it so I ran in, got a half of cider and sat with my back against the wall while I looked at the patrons. With the exception of the young girl sitting at the bar (landlords's daughter?) the rest of clientele seemed to be old, bitter, drunk, and foul mouthed.
The place was dilapidated enough that it was beginning to develop a certain charm. I hope they never change it so I can make it an annual event.

The Crown and Sceptre, Taunton
This might be the best football watching pub in Taunton. They get Sky games as well as Prem Plus. They had two real ales whenever I pop in: 6X and Young's. The guy behind the bar on game day is fast and friendly, but on a busy game day he could use another hand to get the beer out. I did eat a burger and chips there and should not have bothered.

The White Horse Inn, Stogumber
Seems cozy and friendly enough and I enjoyed the beer. I haven't tried the food.
28 Oct 2006 10:49
I had a jamaican goat curry for lunch, and washed it down with several delicious ales. This pub is heaven. I'll have to come back some evening and try the other home-made curries.
28 Oct 2006 10:41
If driving there, I suggest approaching this pub from the south and not the west, as the southern road has more wide spots.
14 Sep 2006 17:51
I haven't had the food yet, but the two times I've been in there I didn't sense any kind of atmosphere. I know this pub is highly rated in the good beer guide, but I just don't see it.
29 May 2006 14:41
A remarkable setting at the very base of a Quantock. A small bar, with the emphasis on food. A bit steep but well worth it.
27 Apr 2006 14:01
The best pub in Taunton? It's is certainly the most traditional pub in town.
27 Apr 2006 13:47
Friendly staff, low ceilings, tasty food and a nice country pub atmosphere. We had lunch there last week and were impressed. I will have to check it out some evening. Avoid the beer called "Ditchwater"
11 Apr 2006 18:49
A very friendly atmosphere at this village pub. Fine selection of cask ales.
2 Apr 2006 14:54
When you walk in, the right half of the pub has an inviting sunken seating area, completely at odds with the left half - over lit, red concrere floor.
27 Mar 2006 12:16
2nd best pub in Watchet. Perhaps a bit short in the selection of cask ales, but lots of friendly regulars in old pub.
27 Mar 2006 11:42
The Holman Clavel Inn, Culmhead
We came for lunch and were tempted to spend the entire afternoon just hanging about by the fire. The previous comments say it all. I will return.
25 Mar 2006 17:50
I've been to this pub twice this winter, once on a weekday afternoon and once on a Saturday afternoon. Both times I received a very friendly greeting from the staff. The weekday visit was very quiet and the few regular locals there made me feel welcome. Saturday afternoon vist was much busier with many small parties having a very sociable time. The "muddy boot" crowd and the "riding crops" all seemed to be mingling amiably. The place is exactly what I expect in country pub. Maybe I'm one of the "vorreigners" to be avoided, I don't know.
25 Mar 2006 11:15
The Cross Keys, Norton Fitzwarren
It's very pleasant inside with two fire places, low ceilings and traditional pub furnishings. This pub does a lot of business being on a busy road, the A358, and puts the emphasis on food. The staff is friendly but not chatty as they are always busy serving customers. It doesn't have a local feel to it, but it is still more personable than many roadside pubs.
The menu is varied and interesting, if a bit expensive. You will find traditional pub food as well as something different.
The cask ale selection is always changing so this pub is always worth a stop to see what is available.

Staplegrove Inn, Taunton
I was hoping one of the more regular reviewers would have verified the change.
