The Morpeth Arms, Pimlico

It was better pre-makeover (inevitably) but it's still not bad. Handy for the Tate. I once got serenaded here by a 70-something former set-designer wearing a fetching neckerchief who worked through most of Doris Day's back catalogue. I can see that's not everyone's cup of tea.

The Speaker, Westminster

Easily the best pub around Westminster/Victoria. They care about the beer. Cosy, friendly, welcoming. My only gripe is that it often seems to be closed at the weekend.

The Seven Stars, Chancery Lane

Baffling recent comments on here. A rare pub with genuine charm, lovely bar staff, very well-kept decent beer and a landlady who is as hospitable to regulars as she is formidable to any random punters behaving badly. Given the location it does attract lawyers - but nowhere's perfect.

The Albert, St James's

Bland and touristy, but I did once see three very merry Chelsea Pensioners fall off their bar stools, one after another, toppling like a set of red dominos. They were laughing so much they couldn't get up for some time. Maybe they'd just been told the price of the beer.

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

Love this place. I don't understand how some people on here seem more concerned with the state of the carpet, the toilets, the fact that they'd like the pub moved three inches to the left or whatever, and overlook the fact that it's always got a great range of beer on, the people who work here are friendly and know what they're talking about, you get to hear Holly Roberts, Jamie and Sally etc, play sh*t-hot music, the customers are an interesting, diverse bucnh and - well I could go on...
It just does exactly what I want a pub to do.
