The John Logie Baird, Hastings

A truly saturnine barn of a place. Lighting seems to evoke atmosphere of a living room in the 1980s. The bar staff mostly children, do not seem at all interested in serving and so, I agree it is impossible to be served with a degree of order or urgency. The seating seems arranged in rows, as if all waiting to reel off into a ditch. Not a happy soul here. Most seem to be aggressive and/or neurotic drunks. Ale served chilled.
Weherspoons can be full of character, this one is by far one of the blandest I've bn too... If not THE blandest.

Grace's, Penge

This isn't closed. What the hell are all these preceding idiots. Currys are very very good. Beer very acceptable. Nothing wrong with this place.

The Albert Tavern, South Norwood

Not bad - been through a number of owners over the years. Current staff know their stuff, food good. Lived here for years, and it's the best it's ever been.

The Anchor, Hastings

Why 'sadly'? If the been is well kept, SN beer can beer magnificent. But it has to be well kept. This place keeps it well (but not magnificently). The best thing about this pub is its atmosphere, and good staff (for George Street) who remembered me from a while ago... and then, when I came in a couple of days later with my family, remembered by family, but mostly the food. The food is over-priced, but it is superlative. Have the fish platter (which they do in season). Yes, at £15 it is steep, but well... WELL... worth it.

The Stag, Hastings

Not quite sure how this can be 'ungentrified' in the area... but I kind of know what they mean. Is a SN pub (and, contrary to others, I am a fan of their beers). When I first visited this in 2013 it was run by a lovely person who gave me a tour. Since then, I have visited and the new owners tried to give me a tour (but knew nothing about the place... not that I asked, but they seemed to want to find out and, for some reason (I suppose being surrounded with such history) were quite apologetic for not knowing... not that I cared). Beer was still well kept. Garden is great. One of the best functional boozers in Hastings.

White Hart, Guestling

Don't have the ale which is so cold you could end up being taken to A&E with your tongue stuck to the glass. (Possibly have the Whitstable Bay in a bottle). Don't speak to the staff who are very sweet, but, being about 18, more interested in arranging their social life (can't blame them... probably v poorly paid job, and although they're v nice people, and place is family friendly, they were... well... you know).
Enjoy views though, and have jolly good nosh up for not much money. Good setting, just unknowledgeable. Deserves a 6 then.

The Two Sawyers, Pett

Really very well kept ale (if a trifle cold). Functional, but knowledgeable and friendly bar-staff. Welcoming to a stranger. But something lacked, in terms of atmosphere. Surprising for such a bucolic location.

The Filo (First In Last Out), Hastings

I had high hopes. Yes, range of ales is good, however they were very badly kept (I tried three). Cannot make up my mind if interior irks because they couldn't be bothered to spend money on an update since 1972, or if they have spent a lot of money on the 'retro' look. Either would be slovenly and unimaginative. Never mind. Many better pubs in the locale to decide from.

The Oval Tavern, Croydon

Oh yeah, and my oldest kid enjoys the 'Storytime' with Jenny, on a Saturday (will soon bring my youngest when old enough). Now, he used to go to this in previous venue, but here it is a lot more intimate. Best of all, though, his meal was absolutely fantastic (Esther cooks I think)and v healthy. And, last Saturday, I had a meal too. It was not only worth it (very cheap (4 pints, two soft drinks, two meals = £25 - that ain't bad at all) and there was an awful lot) but utterly delicious, (i.e. made with good ingredients)... You simply don't expect this from a back-street boozer.

The Oval Tavern, Croydon

This has become, since Esther's taking over, and the addition of all of her Green Dragon Contacts, including Kev (bar person), brilliant, vibrant, buzzing... Love it now. Good choice of ale (one criticism is that could do with more lower gravity beers, and more pumps). Esther told me this afternoon that she has 'loads of beers' - and I riposted with 'but only four pumps'... I kind of meant it though.

Visit this place, it is so full of feeling and atmosphere....
