Clarendon Arms, Cambridge

I'd given this pub a wide berth since the long standing landlord Barry left a couple of years ago, but now on a second change of regime I found myself back. Although the real community spirit seemed diluted, old regulars are coming back. Greedy King beers are what you get, but they are well kept and the guest list is expanding. Food looks good (but didn't eat), and bar staff smile nicely - necessary given the prices. This one's on the up...

The Alexandra Arms, Cambridge

New guys in charge now, and a really friendly atmosphere. Food looks good, especially the steak pie with home-made (really!) puff pastry - respect! Good Sunday quiz, but still anchored to the Greedey King guest beer list - pity given the choice nearby

The Grapes, Limehouse

Have failed to have lunch here twice on weekdays as it was full, but took the wife on a Saturday and can now understand why I was unlucky before. Beautiful mussels for a fiver in posh Narrow St - with spring themed beer - we'll be back. Proper pub feel, but a shame these days to close in the afternoon. Didn't like the look of the fish and chips, though. We should all support pubs like this lest they be distant memories...
