Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, Fleet Street

A pub that, if anything, overplays its history (the Dr Johnson connection is tenuous at best) - but hey, the current building dates back to 1667 so there's plenty of history to play with! Be warned that this is no bright, modern or open-plan pub the dark wooden interior is a maze of narrow corridors and staircases, leading to numerous bars and dining rooms. Fairly cold inside, so nice to visit in the summer. Sam Smith's beer is the order of the day here, meaning that by Central London standards this is home to that rare creature, a reasonably priced pint.

The Lamb and Flag, Covent Garden

Small, unspoilt old-fashioned boozer in a part of London renowned for theme-pubs. Very crowded, turn up late in the evening and you'll have to fight your way to the bar before drinking outside in the street. Ales served are usually kept well.

The Blackfriar, Blackfriars

I like this pub - the interior, a real work of art, must make it truly unique and it's worth going into the place just to take a look! Amazing now to think that so-called 'modernisers' once wanted to demolish it. Can get crowded inside (being a thin, wedge-shaped building, it's not exactly spacious). Cask ales, including TT's Landlord last time I visited. Decent enough food.

The Old White Lion, East Finchley

Convenient location for commuters, wide beer selection - including Fuller's ESB and TT's Landlord when I last dropped by - spacious but comfy atmosphere, nice food (though not as good as the food served in the nearby Bald Faced Stag). Staff seemed friendly enough. It can be very crowded at times but in mitigation that's probably inevitable given its location on the high street and next door to the Tube station.

The Bald Faced Stag, East Finchley

A very 'modern' pub which is squarely aimed at the under 40s. Very friendly staff. Good atmosphere - no loud music or loud telly. Good selection of beer - there are usually at least two cask ales, which are well looked-after and often rotated (as is the wine list). Heated beer garden. Food is of good quality, the people who've posted negative comments about it ought to look around and see how it's priced in other pubs in North London!

The Flask, Highgate

An excellent old-fashioned pub that has apparently recently been taken over by Fuller's and is none the worse for that. The outdoor seating area is perfect in the summer. Guest beer when I visited was Castle Rock's Preservation Ale, the first time I have seen a CR beer in a pub this far south! Food is good and reasonably priced.

The Angel, Highgate

Nice pub. Good beers and good service. Wednesday quiz night is fun.

The Flask, Highgate

A charming pub that would not look out of place in a village! Good beer garden. Shame about the very long queues at the bar though.

The Smugglers, Pett Level

Nice atmosphere, friendly service. A good pint of Harveys to be had here.

The Bartons Arms, Aston

Stunning interior. Good ales. One to visit if you're going to a game at Villa Park.

The Change of Hart, Edgware

A 'locals' pub, can be a bit rowdy if there's a match on (big screens!). The best pub in Edgware, although this says more about the dire state of the others.

The Mill, Mill Hill

Chain pub, but better than most of that ilk. Staff are friendly, beer is OK and the quiz nights are fantastic!!

The Three Hammers, Mill Hill

How can I say this without sounding like an old man? The 'soul' of this pub disappeared when Ember Inns took over the place and gutted it. A 'chain' pub.

The Lincolnshire Poacher, Nottingham

Excellent. Wide selection of quality real ales, great food, friendly staff. The best pub in Nottingham.

The Rising Sun, Mill Hill

A decent, old-fashioned (in a good way!) pub. Cask ales, nice food.

The Railway Tavern, Mill Hill

It's a good, local pub - and that's not a common thing in North London these days.
Generally, it's got an informal, friendly atmosphere, and the landlord looks after his cask ales well. Which is much more than can be said for most pubs in this area.
Nice cheap pub grub as well.
