Wash and Tope Hotel, Hunstanton

A bit sad this one. We visited last week so out of season, so very quiet. The locals in the bar were friendly and the staff very good, limited ales. Menu looked good with plenty of fish, and the place is dog friendly. Other reviews highlighted the slots and curry nights advertised, but it's difficult not to compromise and try and get money in in current circumstances. The people in there are trying.

The King's Arms, Blakeney

This is a smashing pub. Interesting linked rooms, gravity dispense, Pedigree, An Adnams beer and Bishops Finger were on. Don't be put off by the menu outside the pub, that's the all-day stuff, go in and look at the many specials. We chose the battered plaice fillets and they were excellent, good thick fillets in a thin tasty batter. Dog friendly and a great relaxed locals atmosphere.

Ship Inn, Brancaster

I think this should have a fresh start from a rating point of view. I visited here when the legendary old licensee was on hand and it was grim. Re-visited last week and yes it is expensive and competes with the other Gastro Pubs in the area for the big buck punters, BUT the food is excellent, the renovations amazing (but Gasto Pub-ish), and the owners wife brews beer off-site that I thought was excellent. Sea food in particular was very good. Staff are uniformed but very pleasant and helpful. The place is dog friendly. A huge improvement; I think it's better to get investment into pubs and have some compromises from my ideal than to have the old licensee who would have eventually gone out of business with the building going to residential as so many have in the area.

The Jolly Sailors, Brancaster Staithe

Visited in May 2009 - really pleasant. Their own brews plus Wherry Ales. Spoke to a few locals when we were in, and the craic is good. Food really good including their own pizzas. Dogs welcome.

The Black Lion, Thirsk

This used to be a pub that stayed closed unless there was a race on at the local course, when it miraculously opened. It was taken over and for a short time and served decent food. It's now overpriced for the food and when I went in to sample the beer was made to feel unwelcome. It's more of a bistro that serves (average) food.

Brigantes Bar and Brasserie, York

We planned a few drinks on a Friday afternoon in York and used this site to suss out old favourites and some new pubs. Started in Brigantes, but this was a mistake as we never got any further. Very pleasant although as someone else commented it's not a trad pub. Part of the small Market Town Taverns Group we had unknowingly visited a couple of their other pubs (in Northallerton and Wetherby) and had a good result there too. The food is good, the beer excellent including Daleside Blonde and a good Addlestones cider. Definitely a favourite.

Mr Foley's Cask Ale House, Leeds

I'm a big fan of the York Brewery beers and the pub had a good well kept range when we visited. Leeds is not the best for getting good beers but I'd definitely go back to this one. To be honest I don't care about food and stuff, I like to drink good beer and talk rubbish, so I was well at home.

The Angel Inn, Leeds

It's worth seeking this out. It is a quirky wee place. A little odd, but very pleasant when we were in. The Old Brewery Bitter was �1.43 a pint. I can see why it might not suit everyone but I like it!!

The Midnight Bell, Leeds

I stumbled across this place by mistake. It is a little posey, but they had an excellent mild on the night I visited, and the beer does seem very well looked after. I'd go back.

The Grove Inn, Holbeck

The Grove is one of the few good reasons for visiting Leeds for a beer. Never less than really a well kept selection. Pleasant staff. I used to work in the area 35 years ago and although there is very little left with a range of ugly generic buildings, coming upon the Grove always makes me smile-it's a real Doctor Who moment.

Templar Hotel, Leeds

I was last in the Templar twenty-five years ago, but revisited last Friday. The Tetleys is just perfect; it's increasingly difficult to get a good pint, but this was spot on. The only less than perfect comment I would make is that the language in the place can get a little "salty", Not somewhere to take anyone that's not broadminded.

The Crown and Anchor, Sowerby

This is an opportunity missed. Very good beer, decent food. Unless you are on first name terms with the landlady I always find it hard to get served in here, the staff always seem disinterested. Its a bit cliquey and although they have spent a lot of money improving the place, the language customer-side of the bar is pretty awful (I know I sound like a granny but when every other word is a REAL sweary one it does grate eventually). Sad really.

Ship Inn, Brancaster

I recently holdayed in Brancaster, a really nice place. The Ship has had an external makeover and looks better than the photo on the site. Sadly the negative comments made by the other visitors are all true. The landlord is rude, the pipes hadn't been cleaned so a definite fustiness to the beer, poor atmosphere, when we were in a couple of people had food at an adjoining table. The lady had a steak and requested a shaper knife-I took that to be a hint re the tenderness of the food but the landlord just sighed and rolled his eyes. In the next village (Brancaster Staithe) there are two really good pubs, the jolly sailors and the White Horse. It is 1.5 miles of a walk but well worth the effort.
