Barge and Bottle, Sleaford

Busy and mostly lager drinkers which I think goes a long way to explaining previous comments. My other half said his pint of ale was awful. Food ok in a mass catering sort of way. Not expensive though and location is pleasant.

The Surprise, Stockwell

Change of management again this spring and they are now taking plastic again, which may or may not be a good thing for my budget. And the beer has really improved. I actually have the odd pint of Youngs Ordinary now, instead if sticking to boring but safe lager all the time. It's still my local, still bloody expensive for the location.

But even in this grotty so-called summer, the location by the park is good and it's mostly friendly. There are a few rather eccentric new 'regulars though and I for one will be happy never to hear Don McLean ever again off that jukebox.

Photo om this site is very out of date.

The Barley Mow, Southsea

Wish this was my local. Cosy yet spacious, lots of stuff on the walls to look at, comfy seats, very friendly bar staff and locals and excellent range of beers.

Separate games room and garden too, but what really impressed me was that you could buy eggs!

Royal Oak, Salisbury

This is my mate in Salisbury's local but it's taken me several years of intermittent visits to get there. We went on Sunday night over the Jubilee weekend. It was busy at 9pm as the quiz was on. We were too late to join in, but would like to to go back and have a crack at it - proper old fashioned pub quiz! The landlady runs it and she's great.

Atmosphere excellent, beer good, though as previously noted a little pricey for suburban location. The food looked good and quizzers were fed excellent sausages (they let us have some even though we weren't competing). View from back balcony to Old Sarum is fantastic.

The New Inn, Salisbury

Atmospheric old pub in centre of town. Have been three times in the last year when visiting friends and beer has been consistently good. Have some excellent Badger when last there at Jubilee weekend.

Staff young and generally friendly and helpful, but my opinion marred by by slightly distressing incident on last visit when woman who appeared to be the landlady/owner was giving young duty manager grief over non appearance of other staff. Sure, it's an important issue to resolve, but not loudly over the bar when people (i.e me and my partner) are waiting to be served. The young DM was clearly embarassed when Madam finally stalked off.

We found 3 new pubs (one a day) in Salibury over the long weekend and now have a range of other places to go to on our next visit and maybe we will at that. This landlady really needs to think about the impression she's creating to the public.

I would give it 7 but marked down on her behaviour alone.

The Old Mill, Salisbury

Beautiful setting in the water meadows, a good stopping off point if you do a circular walk, as we did. The tables at the front overlooking the millpond were all full and it was hot (June 2nd), so we say out the back in a lovely little garden right by the water. Good place for twitchers to sit!
Decent enough pint, didn't sample the food though.

The Wyndham Arms, Salisbury

The home of Hopback. Surprisingly low key, very much a locals pub but friendly enough and blissfully unmessed around with by designers. I visited with local friends over the Jubilee weekend. The Hopback Taiphoon is a fantastic beer and kept em going on the 40 minute walk back across Salisbury. Lovely to see families playing board game sin the other room (we sat in the snug).

The Dolphin Inn, Hastings

I was there the day after I visited the the nearby Stag, at the end of May. Lovely pint of Dark Star IPA after an invigorating walk in the country park at the top of the cliff. Whitebait and chips ok, not special, but generous portiosn and service was excellent - very friendly.

The Stag, Hastings

Lovely little pub, friendly welcome and excellent beer. Mummified cats a little startling at first. My local friend tells me they do good food and music nights, but sadly we weren't in town for long enough to sample. I have every plan to go back.

The Surprise, Stockwell

Lovely location, friendly, and the dog, Toffee, is still there and now on a diet.

The Evening Star, Brighton

We visited for the first time this week and will definitely be back. Hophead is a fragrant golden joy to drink on a warm spring day. Staff and punters friendly, and the loos were the best seen in Brighton pubs this weekend. How do we find a London pub that stocks Dark Star beer?
