Miserable satff, tired decor and the management need to know when to place an order. An appaling example of a chain pub.
The only redeeming feature is the cheap prices.

The Chicago Rock Cafe, Maidstone
For some reason I often end up here at the end of the night when I'm drunk.
The music is unashamedly cheesy, the staff all appear to have a sense of humour bypass, if you drink anything from the tap be then on your own head be it. The male clientele consist mainly of those who can't get in elsewhere and the female guests consist of those who can't pull elsewhere.
Despite all of the above the atmosphere is one of fun and very unpretentious. That's probably why I keep going back there!

The Old House at Home, Maidstone
This is a traditional family run free-house in the centre of a busy town, an almost unheard of commodity these days. However it is also a whole lot more.
It is a pub that caters to everyone, 4 TV screens showing sport, 2 fruit machines, a dartboard and a pool table, regular live music and karaoke on Saturday nights, great food (I've seen many a hardened man fall short of completing a Sunday lunch), friendly service and, most importantly good beer.
Jim and Karen, the owners, are both real characters and this influence rubs off well on their bar staff, all of whom are efficent, offer service with a smile and are up for a chat.
The other factor in The Old House's favour is how remarkably trouble free it is, again something quite rare by Maidstone standards. In the years I've been a regular there I've never seen a punch thrown.
All in all a good all round boozer and well worth checking out if you're over 21 and not wearing a vest or baseball cap!

Society Rooms, Maidstone
A typical Wetherspoons pub, large, cheap, soulless and sterile. Also the last two times I've eaten there the food has not been good. It will do but it's not great.
