The Central Hotel, Gateshead

Good range of well kept beers suiting all tastes and all served in best condition. For those wanting food there's a comprehensive menu of wholesome food. There were four of us and we all had something different. Not one complaint, and the fat chips were excellent.

Upstairs is a venue for live music which appears to be very popular. All in all a very good pub which I'll return to when next in the area.

The Antelope, Surbiton

Under new management - now a free house with a large selection of constantly changing real ales - ten, plus five ciders and various bottled beers .......... beer selection and condition were very good . The food looked pretty good too. Well worth a visit if you happen to be in the area as it certainly beats all the other local hostelries and there's some good ones!

Thomas Rigby's, Liverpool

Decent selection of ales in good condition. Lively atmosphere and bar staff were quick off the mark and knowledgeable. I'll be happy to return next time I'm in Liverpool.

The Ship and Mitre, Liverpool

Well impressed - not only 13 beers on hand pump but amazing selection of bottled beers and whiskies. Bar staff were very attentive and serving individuals in turn - obviously they've either brought in new staff or retrained the old. Oh! And the beers sampled were in excellent condition - especially Corby Noir ...... good selection of beers and a fair number of local ales.

The Y Giler Arms, Pentrefoelas

Passing through again and stopped over for the B & B. Pleased to say all was well yet again. Both Mild and Bitter were in excellent condition, staff were very friendly and the menu was varied and good - the Green Thai Curry complemented the beer really well. Certainly intend to return next year.

The Sussex Arms, Twickenham

Marvellous establishment - 14 real ales all in excellent condition and soon as one ran out a new ale was quickly put on. Five or six draft ciders too. Fortunately there's a massive beer garden which accommodates children. Allegedly the food was good. Oh! And the bar staff are very friendly and quite happy for you to sample before buying - excellent background music on throughout the night. If you're in Twickenham then worth while visiting.

The Beerhouse, Bury St Edmunds

Turned up at the Beer House in order to get the train - didn't have enough ime to do it justice as they had a beer festival on!! Range of beers was awesome, though I understand when no festival on their selection is good anyway. Everything I sampled was in excellent condition, well served by knowledgeable staff. Good thing was, there were plenty of people drinking who not participating in the festival, so I'm presuming it's a "good" pub. Will have to revisit when it hasn't got a festival on to see for myself.

The Nutshell, Bury St Edmunds

What can you say? It's tiny and typical GK beers - then again it's so unique a stay in Bury wouldn't be complete without dropping in and checking it out. I'll be back .....

Kitty O'Hanlans, Plymouth

Walked passed on a Thursday night and it was heaving with live music going on - sadly, didn't pop in. Went back the next night, busy with a great atmosphere and music to suit all tastes - the Jail Ale was on and very well kept, though most people were drinking Guinness! Sky Sports News showing discretely in the corner too.Despite being busy there was hardly any waiting for drinks - and the barmaids remembered the order!! Landlord very friendly and welcoming. Returned Saturday morning for the England rugby game and a traditional Irish breakfast and the Jail ale was just as good. Quite happy to recommend this pub to anyone visiting Plymouth - I'll certainly head back there next time I visit.

A special thanks to the Landlord to introducing me to the music of Mad Dog MCrea too - just a pity I didn't go in on the Thursday when they were actually playing live ......

The Y Giler Arms, Pentrefoelas

Very friendly host and staff serving Bathams Best and Mild which were both very well looked after. Great place to stop off on route to or from Holyhead for a pleasant drink and good pub food. You can't go wrong with the cheeseboard and a decent wine from a good selection for a pub.

Three bars to choose from, public, games (with a quality juke box) and lounge with a separate dining area if required - then again if the weather is good the outside area has great views in a tranquil surrounding just off the A5, but you wouldn't know it!

Second time we've stopped off here and never been disappointed - even had live music you could sing along to! Definitely be back next time we're passing through.

The Compton Arms, Islington

The landlord appears to take great pride in displaying his tea mug with the slogan "grumpy old man". I can verify that the cap fits him - even his staff looked askance at him as went out of his way to turn perfectly reasonable punters away. He obviously believes that operating in the style of Basil Fawlty will make his fortune, unfortunately I doubt whether he disclosed this part of his business plan to his financial backers.

So, no longer will I make this venue a meeting place before attending the Union Chapel or a televised football match after work! But if you are attracted to the idea of being abused by someone who doesn't understand the concept of customer service, then this is the place for you!
