The "arl of Esse" as the sign proudly boasts on the outside is a curious thing. Seems to go through landlords like they're going out of fashion which inevitably causes fluctuations in the quality of the beer. Still, the majority of the regulars seem to have been drinking in there non-stop for the last 10 years so it can't be doing them much harm. Apart from the red faces, hairy cheeks and visible heart palpitations, obviously...
A big pub that's rarely busy, says it all really. Pool tables and a jukebox the only real incentives to go in.

Steve, why didn't you call the police yourself?
Over-priced it is not, especially if you're in there on a Thursday night.

Comfortable and airy, great for a relaxing drink with mates or girlfriend. Bar staff are generally very good and the beer is excellent.

Grotty pub with absolutely no character at all, makes you feel dirty just walking through the door. Cheap beer is about all it has going for it but this obviously contributes to the sort of people that go in there.

A place for the pre-Romford crowd to perfect their posing, this pub is usually frequented by people more interested in looking good than actually enjoying themselves. Some decent music at times but certainly not a drinkers choice.

Best pub in Hornchurch by quite a way. A recent refurb has affected the character only slightly but it remains essentially the same. Good beer, reasonably priced, good atmosphere and some cracking live bands at no extra cost.

Exremely pricey for what is basically an old man's pub. The beer's not great but the bar staff are generally quick and helpful.

What a bunch of girls. A decent pint of Fosters or John Smiths, 2 all day every day, and clientele nowhere near as rough as has been indicated below. Massive screen and numerous tellys for sports and a generally decent boozer. Bar staff aren't particularly clued up though.

Was in here last night (Sunday) for the first time in about 10 years and amazingly the pub is even better than I remember it. The low ceilings and oak beams give it real character and with the two bars and bar staff who know how to treat customers, the place has a genuine atmosphere. A surprisingly great experience.
