The Racehorse Inn, Taunton

Spent many years living (and drinking) in Taunton and would agree that this is the only real pub in the town to get a real pint of ale. One of the few remaining traditional pubs in the town that has avoided being refurbished with television screens, halogen lighting and cheap gassy beer. Hope it never changes.

The White Horse Inn, Stogumber

Have only been here once but found it to be a lovely little village pub. Good ales and a relaxed atmosphere, will be going back soon to try the food as some of the plates coming out looked good value. As previously said parking is a bit difficult.

The Naval and Military, Taunton

What a hole, obviously aren't making enough profit to buy a tin of paint. Went in there once as part of a pub crawl as was glad to be in the company of some Scottish steel fixers. Have driven past this place at lunchtime before and seen fighting outside. When you're inside you see why - the place is full of alkies who wait outside every morning for it to open. Carpet is so full of grime that you have to keep moving to prevent getting stuck to it. Bring the bulldozers in, until then cross the road to walk past.

The Half Moon Inn, Stoke St Mary

Large family run pub serving good ale (London Pride, Butcombe)and generous portions of very reasonably priced food. Friendly service and good family pub atmosphere. Exposed beams and warmly decorated. Large beer garden for those summer afternoons, and open fires for those winter evenings.

The Queens Arms, Pitminster

Nice country pub in a quite little village at the base of the Blackdowns. Doesn't seem to draw the regular crowds that it once did. However the quieter atmosphere and the combination of friendly staff and good food means that it is often used for occasion meals for large groups. Still keep a few ales but not 7 as they did a few years back. New decor has lightened the place up but taken away a lot of that traditional pub feel.

The Holman Clavel Inn, Culmhead

Good local pub situated on the Blackdown Hills, serving good food and beer. Good atmosphere any time of the day. In the middle of nowhere so take the wife to drive you home - you may have to disguise your ploy by taking her there for a meal (suggest it for your birthday so that she pays)!!

The Fitzhead Inn, Fitzhead

Another nice country pub with new covered patio area outside. The "miserable git" has now been replaced! Book early if you want a meal as it is only a small pub with few tables. Well kept local ales (cotleigh).

The Rising Sun Inn, West Bagborough

Come on YoYo where's your review?
After being totally gutted by a fire it's nice to see the revival of this country pub. Despite the new refurbishment efforts have been made to make the interior look old - flagstone floor, exposed beams, and old furniture. No beer garden but the well kept range of ale which can be enjoyed out the front of the pub on the benches! Food was superb, recommend the Lamb.

The Blue Ball Inn, Triscombe

The pub has been moved from the house into a converted barn so don't expect a "traditional" pub. However the barn is warmly decorated and serves good food and well kept ale. The large terraced beer garden with fine views is an ideal place to try out the lunchtime menu. Not so much a drinking mans pub, as a place for enjoying a quite meal with family or friends.

The Carew Arms, Crowcombe

Go for a walk on the Quantock hills, find your way to the picturesque village of Crowcombe, walk into the 400 year old country pub on the original flagstone floor (complete with dog and dirty boots) and sit next to the inglenook with a pint - bliss. If you want a cheap mass produced plate of re-heated fish and chips then stay in the local towns. If you don't mind paying a bit more for a large helping of homecooked fresh food then you won't go far wrong at the Carew. Country folk and those "vorreigners" who want to "live the country life" will all be welcomed.
