The Pen and Wig, Cardiff

Used to be a fantastic pub, the Sunday roasts were worth walking a fair way in the rain for! Sadly, has gone the way of many of the formerly independent pubs, and the food now has a distinctly 'microwave' feel to it.

The ales are the major disappointment here, the London Pride and Old Speckled hen used to be really well-kept and made this pub one of the few reliable places to visit on any day. Now, despite there being four hand-pumps, you'd be lucky to find more than one or two ales on. Unfortunately it seems these days as if packing the place full to bursting on the weekend and getting rid of as much poor-quality ale is the order of the day.

A real shame...

The Mochyn Du, Cardiff

One of the better pubs in Cardiff, reliably well-kept ales and decent food. Cosy interior and a great location: near Bute Park, the Cayo and Sophia Gardens. The Brains ales in particular are well-looked after.

The Goat Major, Cardiff

Decent Brains beer here, the SA Gold is particularly good. Food is alright, fairly typical. One of the better pubs in Cardiff, certainly in the City Centre.

The Beverley, Cardiff

Not a bad place, has regular live music events and has a nice seating area for the Summer (or the Winter, if you are brave). Food is only average, and the beer is reliable if a little predictable. Would be nice to see a few guest ales, and to respond to one of the posters re: Brains SA, why would you want to get exactly the same ale in EVERY pub in Cardiff? I dance with delight if I see no Brains beers available!

The Cayo Arms Hotel, Cardiff

This used to be a fantastic Tomos Watkins pub, really well kept ales and a 'go-to place' a few years ago. Moved back to Cardiff last year and although it is still (arguably) the best pub in Cardiff, this gem has lost a little lustre.

Bought by Marstons and although it does have a good selection of ales, they don't have the 'must-try' factor that ales served here used to. Food has also gone from very good to average (again, Marstons and their "glossy menu" antics). Still, has a couple of Tomos Watkins beers and is FANTASTIC for match days.
