"Bristol & District branch Pub Of The Year 2011 results: Winner Seven Stars, Redcliffe"
Big congrats to all @ Seven Stars!
20 Mar 2011 10:06
Still as good as ever and an ever changing range of ales all in great condition and at great prices. A proper pub that concentrates on what a pub should, beer!
9 Mar 2011 21:04
Wow, what a difference!
Gone are the bad old day's of Hidden brewery and now a vibrant ale house that offers all that should be great about a British pub. Eclectic range of ales and 2 real ciders on offer, beer in excellent condition on my visit and the 10% discount on all real ale for CAMRA members a lovely touch that for me was the cherry on top of the cake knowing I was saving 30p on each drink.
Keep this great work up, why can't all pubs be run as tightly as this ship? It's not rocket science after all, do your job and do it well and they will come as was proved by the crowds on my post lunch visit.

Wow! What a change for the good.
Bristol's smallest pub has finally come of age. Nice, eclectic range of beers on tap, great food at el cheapo prices and really friendly staff to boot. I've finally found nirvana in central Bristol. I apologise to the local competition, sorry but there is no better pub in this area right than The Bridge at present and I include the mighty Seven Stars in that. Well done Bridge Inn!
27 Feb 2011 23:31
Been going to The Sportsman for over 25 years now and it's still good. Beer & cider always in great nick. Not to everyone's taste with the big screen TV's and pool tables but put that aside if it's not your cup of tea and you will still enjoy it.
27 Feb 2011 23:26
Well now I've fallen out of love with the Bear due to inconsistent beer quality it's back to the Turf for me on a nice sunny Monday dinnertime.
Staff were great on my visit, nice chat with a few of the locals in the small front bar and a few pints of Summer Ale. Not "too many" tourists on a cold February Monday so that made it bliss!
27 Feb 2011 23:23
Sad to say the last few times I've visited the beer in general has been pretty sub par, flat & lifeless. One of my favourite Oxford pubs in the recent past but I've had to move on. 3.45 for a pint of Fullers ESB in poor condition is pushing it too much.
27 Feb 2011 23:20
Almost everything that can be said about The Star has already been said so I can only really add that I agree. Hilarious landlord and good staff too!
27 Feb 2011 23:12
Still as quirky, great beer, great characters and some great music played here too.
I still remember most fondly a visit last summer on a balmy dinnertime when a record deck was placed on the bar and plugged in, an LP placed on the turntable and the wonderful sounds of "Almost Cut My hair" by CSN&Y flowing through the speakers. You just don't EVER get that in today's plastic pubs and JDW's. Sublime! :-)
27 Feb 2011 23:07
For me the best pub in Watchet. I've always had a friendly welcome here, good service and the real ale and cider always in great nick and generally a really nice and relaxing pub. Never tried the food so cannot comment.
27 Feb 2011 20:11
Best pub I've visited in Minehead by far. Excellent and friendly service, all beers my party of 5 tried were in beautiful condition and the food we ate good value and a high standard. 9/10.
27 Feb 2011 20:00
The Duke of Wellington, Minehead
Worst JDW I know, an obnoxious manager, poor service, food not great and most of the time the majority of ales are not on. Add to that uncleared tables just left for ages and you will just wish you had gone elsewhere.
I've given this 3 separate chances now and it has let down every single time. We went to the Old Ship Aground in the harbour after the final fiasco here and were treated like kings, served superb food and some beautifully kept St Austell Tribute. Sorry JDW but you have lost another few customers thanks to this place!
27 Feb 2011 19:57
Great as it ever was, lovely drink outside on a summers day so relaxing too. Not very busy on visit in question so I do hope people are supporting this fine pub.
16 Aug 2010 16:49
Great single room pub, excellent range of ales and well priced too @ between 2.00 - 2.60. Beer tried was in superb condition and the barman friendly and good at his job. What more can a drinker ask for?
6 Aug 2010 23:08
+ Another vote to Mike Starr on pub crawl groups!
Good on Duncan! Soho as a whole is not what it used to be pub wise so good to see drinking groups barred from The Ship. Go get drunk and make a nuisance of yourselves at any of the other low class dumps in the area and leave this establishment for people who enjoy a good chat, great beer and cracking music without all the hassle & aggro a bunch of drunken tw@ts bring to a pub.
27 May 2010 13:58
@ pmeister
Paul, thank you very much for your explanation! Maybe I was a bit harsh too at the time and apologise if my comments came across that way. It's just that ESB is so hard to come by in this part of the country and when you enjoy it as much as I do it's great to be able to visit your pub to imbibe, I will say it is always served in superb condition too at the Cambridge so praise & due credit for that as it's not always that way elswhere.
27 May 2010 13:43
Can't add much more than Roodeye's review really, 10p CAMRA reduction is a nice touch. Locals seem to be pretty friendly as do staff & landlord and beer tried was in good condition.
It's great when pubs like this turnaround and easily the best pub in Thornbury by a mile and then some, actually the pub is located in Morton if being pedantic. Nice garden at rear too if we ever get a summer, well worth a try!
11 May 2010 05:20
The Filo (First In Last Out), Hastings
Glad to see nowt's changed since my last visit, well apart from the fact there was no Ginger Tom on which was a shame - boy is that a great beer! Still, the Gold I drank instead was just as good and went down a treat.
as per what brightonbrawler said, just wish I lived a lot nearer myself. A cracker of a pub and easily Hastings finest!
26 Apr 2010 15:54
The Salehurst Halt, Robertsbridge
Nice country pub, super Dark Star ales and some very friendly locals.
Perfect you might think - erm, no. The service, oh the service or the lack of it! Slow beyond any reason despite there being 3 or 4 staff behind the bar on my visit. Even the regulars were moaning about it so it was obviously not a one off and one local even commented on how the landlord got off on ignoring people waiting at the bar and serving them in *his* time scale as he perceived himself to be so important.
Pubs like this never cease to amaze me, don't drink their and the management will soon get the message and either change or die. Vote with your cash & feet!
26 Apr 2010 15:47
Car park full of Audi's and 4x4's as I drove in, I feared the worst and sadly as expected got it. Nice pub but highly pretentious, couldn't even get near the main bar to order a drink and the locals welded to it on their stools most defiantly where not going to allow you to get any nearer just looking nonchalantly down the end of their noses if they looked at all.
After waiting and trying to get served a quick conference between my wife and I and we both agreed they were not getting our money in the till as hard as it even would have been to get it there! Went to the Queens Head @ Ickelsham which was the total opposite. Avoid!
26 Apr 2010 15:42
Got to be honest, visited many times and found the staff very welcoming and cheery. The samples I was provided with of the different local ales being way beyond the call of duty and generous indeed.
Lovely country pub just down a small lane off the main Hastings-> Rye main road. Excellent selection of well served real ales and a very interesting food menu to boot. Probably the best pub in the area and well worth a visit.
26 Apr 2010 15:36
Nowhere near Rye as it is in Peasmarsh several miles away so how it came to be classified as a Rye pub is beyond me.
Beer was OK, steak night on a Tuesday @ 5.99 for an 8 o/z with all the trimmings was what brought me in here and it was very good indeed. Beer range dull + 3 a pint and cloudy even though it tasted OK. Evens.
26 Apr 2010 15:32
Getting a wee bit fed up with this pub and the management's poor attitude regarding the changing of ales when one runs out.
Several recent visits the ESB has either been off or finished on busy Friday & Saturday evenings and despite one promise of changing the barrel this has not happened even though I was assured there was another ready to tap. Now, if this had been on a quiet Monday then fair enough - they had no problems changing the Butcombe on my last visit when guess what? Yep, the ESB was off yet again despite the pump clip not being turned around to indicate it was yet again off. Pfffffffffffftttttttt, poor show and marked down accordingly!
26 Apr 2010 15:27
What on earth could I add to thereverend667's fine review of this pub? Nothing much really I'm afraid.
Took a 20 mile round trip from Rye to visit this fine pub and boy was it worth it. What a lovely lady Doris is, OK so her hearing aid batteries were playing up that night much to the locals pleasure, but what a character - thoroughly enjoyed listening to her tales of the past, what a pub, great beer/cider.
If you HATE Harvesters, pubs with kiddies running around everywhere, are sick of the majority of pubs that only care about diners, just don't get Wetherspoon's, wouldn't even wash your floors with UK brewed lager then I really feel this is probably your ideal pub. If in the area you must aim to visit this unique pub above any others on your list, it made my holiday it really did! 10/10 - One of England's finest and three cheers to Doris for keeping it that way!
26 Apr 2010 03:47
If I have one complaint about The Standard it is this - You have a job to get in as it's so packed, which tells it's own story. You can here the cheery atmosphere float down the pavements and it adds a warmness to your welcome here, a happy crowd in a happy pub.
Harveys was very good too, will be back.
26 Apr 2010 03:36
Have to agree with hfg, things have obviously changed here and for the better. Really enjoyed my visit, firstly the warm welcome I received followed then the excellent beer selection and choice of real cider and real perry.
Really nice ambience this place has and they manage to make both diners and drinkers welcome in equal measures which is good. The local Rother Valley Northiam IPA I had was in excellent condition and went down a treat. If visiting Rye right now I wouldn't look any further than here or the Standard for a drink, both by far the pubs at the top end of the scale for service and beer quality in Rye April 2010.
26 Apr 2010 03:33
How on earth does this pub survive with "Basil Fawlty" at the helm? The man is rude, ignorant & arrogant in equal amounts and to be frank even his gloated beer quality was not remotely in the same league as his personal opinion of it and by far the dearest beer I drank in the area in a week at 3.20 a pint.
I visited with an open mind but came away knowing all those poor BITE reviewers before me were yet again spot on with their views, which is sad for what is essentially a really nice pub apart from the numpty running it. Whilst there I personally viewed a most unpleasant and rude exchange from the landlord with a lady customer that even I found hard to digest. She had bought a round of drinks and immediately noticed that landlord Fawlty had short changed her by 1, she politely asked him if this was correct and his response was "Oh, so you want all your change do you?" ..... and then something along the lines of "Another customer who'd take the shirt off your back if they could!". He was playing to the gallery's of locals around the bar for cheap laughs but trying to make this lady look a fool - what a MORON!
Whilst this pub is no longer in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide I will still be penning a letter to the local branch chairman ensuring they are fully aware of the latest dealings here which they no doubt probably already are in fairness.
All I can say to anybody in the Rye area on a visit is AVOID, AVOID, AVOID !!! Far better pubs within a 2 minute walk such as the excellent Ship on the Quay or the Standard on The Mint where you will find better prices, better beer quality and a warm welcome.
26 Apr 2010 03:25
The William the Conqueror, Rye Harbour
Tatty but about to be decorated when I visited last week. Not a bad pub at all really in that friendly, down to earth tatty around the edges manner. Beer was good, usual dull, dull, dull SN range though and though I never ate the food coming out of the kitchen looked very good indeed.
Rye Harbour is a great little spot to sit and watch the sun go down (especially with the wildlife reserve right next to the harbour and the marvellous walks around the area) whilst enjoying a beer and this is the perfect spot to do it.
26 Apr 2010 03:10
Now taken over by Thatchers cider co and all the better for it so far. Nice range of beers on my visit including an unusual RCH special which I sadly cannot remember the name of. Full range of Thatchers cider on draught and in fine fettle too, but then it only has to travel a few hundred yards.
Landlady and staff very welcoming, ate there and the food was very reasonable and good honest pub grub. Well worth a visit after a cider buying trip @ Thatchers.
7 Apr 2010 09:48
I truly love this pub but of late the interior in places is looking a bit, shall we say .... tatty. Not tatty as in charm and ye olde inn but tatty as in .."Watch it, that wall might fall down if you press too hard!". Really is about time they spent some money on decoration/renovation - No changes, keep it the same/similar but look after the place a bit better is all I and my travelling companions ask. The loos? Erm, yes those too.
Still a great pub though, great beer, cider and simple well cooked home food.
7 Apr 2010 09:44
The White Horse, Parsons Green
The Kelham Island Captain (6% !!) I drank last weekend must be the finest beer I've drank in years and went down the throat like honey. Always spoiled by the choice here and considering the area the prices are not that bad really. Must try some of the imported lagers some day. My favourite "beer range" pub in the whole of England period!
If you are in London for goodness sake try it and don't be put off by it's location out of central London, it's only 3 stops from Earl's Court on the District line and well worth the short ride (pub just a minutes walk from the tube station) to beer heaven!
6 Apr 2010 17:53
Just a glorified restaurant and not the best prices for a Brains joint either, bit on the expensive side. My companion and I however were starving after a day out in the area and ordered a humble burger each and waited what seemed like forever for it
Anyway more importantly the beer, the Brains Bread of Heaven I tried was very bland indeed and rather ruined by kiddies running about the place. Never again!
6 Apr 2010 17:45
The White Hart, Littleton on Severn
Beer condition great here, beauty of a pint of Young's London Gold on my visit .....well OK several pints! At long last it's nice to see them finally taking care of the beer drinker as well as the diners. Good for them!
6 Apr 2010 17:38
FYI:- Now been removed from the CAMRA Good Beer Guide 2010 due to poor beer quality. tut, tut.
6 Apr 2010 17:31
Popped in on a busy Fri eve and far too many cloudy pints being drank that were most certainly *not* wheat beer! When I asked one of the bar staff why a certain beer was being served in that condition he said the landlord said it was supposed to be like that but couldn't remember why. Well I tasted it and it was well on the way to vinegar and shouldn't have been cloudy, shouldn't have been on and landlord obviously telling porkies. tut, tut.
This place promises so much but is still failing to deliver - Such a shame!
6 Apr 2010 17:25
Nice pub, again not been in for years but nothing much seemed to have changed. Well boring beer range including Butcombe & Gloom Bar {yawnnn} but at least they served a nice pint of Thatchers Trad @ 2.45 a pint.
As f_b_b said a great range of snacks including the all time classics of the snack world:- Bacon Fries, Cheese Moments & Scampi Fries! :-)
6 Apr 2010 17:19
Nice refurb, nice staff, superb range of real ales, real cider, imported German lager, wheat beer and the US Anchor on draught too! A bit pricey for beer @ 3.20 a pint for TT Landlord but it was sublime and one of the best pints of Landlord I've drank outside of Keighley.
Bad point? Shame there had to be one and it is chronic - The prices of food were ridiculous! Main courses seemed to be in the 10 - 14 range, I can eat @ Marco Pierre White's Chelsea restaurant for that sort of dosh and eat top end food - Have they hired Gordon Ramsay here in the kitchen or something? Havin' a laff and I hope they reconsider both the menu and the pricing of.
6 Apr 2010 17:14
Not been in for years for some strange reason. Nothing had changed though, well kept beer, well priced meals and still the same landlord. Well worth a visit if you are in the area and don't be put off because it's a Youngs pub as the the guest ale range is always interesting including the ever present Brains SA.
6 Apr 2010 17:04
The Black Horse, Clapton in Gordano
"Still the same, Some things never change" sang Bob Seger back in the 1970's and sadly in 2010 that can be said about very little (especially in the pub trade!) but thankfully that can still be said about The Black Horse. Nothing's changed, it's still the fantastic relaxed unpretentious country pub it's always been.
The picture of the Wurzels sat outside the pub and the one of the Steam Roller are still hung on the walls, Thatchers cider is still on sale and the beer, though the range is a bit dull, is always tip-top.
So if you like change, don't bother coming here - it's awful in that respect! :-)
25 Mar 2010 12:23
Agree with diafol totally, boy has The Windmill lost it's way over the past year!
Much better to drive down the road to the Black Horse @ Clapton these day's, not for your foodies granted but for character, ambience and drink it's easily the best pub in the area IMHO.
25 Mar 2010 12:16
New manager, Brains SA & RJ on tap as said. Why they don't sell the sublime, award winning Brains SA Gold in a Brains pub though is totally beyond me but seems very common in Brains pubs in general for some reason???
25 Mar 2010 12:12
Agree with Blackthorn's review, it does lack many elements despite so many positive points such as location, layout etc, etc.
They want it to be a restaurant and *not* a pub and that's where (IMHO) they are going wrong. It might be a GK pub but they can use the facility of a guest ale if they were so inclined so no excuses on their part. Such a shame because they are half way there but don't seem interested in making it a whole and the real deal it could and should be!
25 Mar 2010 12:08
Beer continues to be great here, not the most inspired of ranges granted but always great condition. I've never liked London Pride for years ever since Fullers changed the recipe (Fullers still deny it mind!) but after hearing one chap comment on it's condition tried it myself and it was sublime, not like the old days granted, but wonderful condition.
The food's supposed to be very good here too but can't comment as I rarely visit pubs for eating.
25 Mar 2010 12:03
Just love The Bell! Can't say I've experienced some of the staff problems etc reported here but then I only have ever visited on a dinner time so maybe that's why but from personal experience if members like an_ecunemical_matter say there's a problem then there most *defiantly is* I'd wager.
Can only comment on my numerous visits though and have always found the beer range great, quality great and some right characters to be met in surely what must be, well for me, Bath's finest pub.
25 Mar 2010 11:54
Packed with tourists in this tiny central boozer as usual on my visit but somehow just managed to get a seat.
The beer range on this visit was very poor & dull with not even the usual TT Landlord on?!? Settled for a pint of White Horse "Wayland Smithy" which I must say was in excellent condition. Nothing else there worth trying so left after just the one for the far better FFTMC up the road. I won't exactly be in a rush to visit here again, much, much better boozers all within walking distance.
25 Mar 2010 11:43
Well I managed to use a 50p off CAMRA voucher in here, about the best thing I can say about it really.
The beer range was dull, dull, dull and settled for a pint of (yawn!) Abbott Ale which was OK. The food we ordered (reason for coming here) was fairly poor, served on cold plates and the use of oven chips spotted a mile off - shame on JDW! A weekend in Oxford and easily the worst pub we visited by a long chalk, is it just me or are JDW pubs getting worse in general no matter where they are located?
25 Mar 2010 11:37
Brilliant! Took the Mrs to visit the infamous "Headington Shark" as an excuse to try this Fullers pub and so glad I did as was she.
Cracking pint of the oh so hard to find Chiswick bitter, landlord very friendly as were the locals. Bare floors, sensible seating and a great outside area for warmer weather or the lesser spotted smoker. Only wish I lived across the road and it was my local! Top marks on this one that's for sure.
25 Mar 2010 11:33
Far From the Madding Crowd, Oxford
Walked in and thought I was visiting a mini JD "Wether-Hanger" which I guess they can't do too much about, that's just the way the building is. However, the service received was fantastic as was beer advice. The beers I tried were all in sublime condition and the managers 2.10 pint most refreshing to see (and drink!) in an Oxford pub.
No wonder it's won so many awards, probably the best pub in Oxford right now despite it not having the olde world charm of some of it's competitors.
25 Mar 2010 11:28
Nice pub, great friendly service and the beer (though at West End prices!) was well kept/served. Food also seemed *very* expensive for what it was, no doubt after the tourist dollar there which is a shame.
25 Mar 2010 11:23
First visit here in eons and range & experience similar to downender really.
Tried the Anglo-Dutch brews which were OK, the ESB was alright, nothing more sadly and lacked it's usual zing and full flavour so either the lines needed cleaning or it had been hanging about which I doubt considering how busy the place was. All in all a nice visit and found the staff on evening pretty good and attentive too. Things that can be improved upon that's for sure but I think I'll be back again soon considering how varied the range of beer was this time.
22 Feb 2010 16:03
Hmm, usual uninspiring "WeatherHanger" with very little charm at all. Uninspired range of ales on evening I visited and empty plates of food just left on tables all over the place. Toilet check records indicating the bogs had not been checked for the past 12 hours fully backed up by the bad smells.
Reasonable pint of Cottage and the Abbot was just alright, what one has to go through to get rid of their 50p off a pint CAMRA JDW vouchers. {sigh}
10 Feb 2010 02:54
Still as good as ever, nothing's changed since winning CAMRA National Cider Pub 2009 at all which is nice.
Some nice guest ales of late too inc Wickwar Station Porter which was in perfect condition and oiled the innards nicely.
10 Feb 2010 02:47
Not visited for almost a year but still as good as ever and beer was spot on! Nice mixed crowd on the Friday eve I visited too. Just wish I lived closer.
19 Jan 2010 14:36
Robert Fitz Harding, Bedminster
Not been in for a while but boy has this place gone downhill fast! Beer range being the biggest "Bore Fest" in any JDW pub I've visited of late - uninspired, dull, boring! C'mon Manager, you can do far better than this - of 12 ish pumps most were duplicated and beer that can be had anywhere. Dull, dull, dull!
Don't even get me started on the service (Arrrggghhh!) offered (or rather not!) by the staff in question on the night I visited. My friend and I both had to wait ages, firstly for one young lady being diligent in filling the cooler full of beer bottles and ignoring all the waiting punters at the bar and the 2nd occasion just someone so untrained as to know when a barrel was empty despite her 350th pull on the hand pump and *NO* beer coming out - Err give up love, it be empty I tell ye! {sigh}
Rubbish !!!
11 Jan 2010 15:58
Great little pub! Excellent & attentive service which is so rare these days, beer in superb condition and a nice atmosphere. Not in these parts often but will def return when I am next here.
1 Jan 2010 19:27
The Horse and Groom, St Leonards on Sea
Went in here purely on it's 2010 GBG entry - what a mistake! (Biased voting for one's local by CAMRA members for the GBG? Surely not! pahhh!!!)
Beer quality was very poor and the atmosphere akin to a funeral parlour being run by Leonard Cohen. In fact if "Like a bird on a wire" had been playing it may have even cheered the place up! Far better pubs close by such as FILO for one.
25 Oct 2009 14:15
The Filo (First In Last Out), Hastings
Cracking little pub hidden well enough away from the maddening crowds. Ginger Tom was superb on my 2 visits and a really great atmosphere here.
25 Oct 2009 14:11
Nice pub, cracking location, great service but very average beer quality.
Tried both Spitfire and Taping the Admiral and both very ho hum with the Spitfire being very tired.
25 Oct 2009 14:09
Swan just awarded an entry in the 2010 Good Beer Guide and deservedly so from what I've seen so far.
4 Sep 2009 13:03
Nice country pub, 3 real ales on tap all served in good condition + Weston's Old Rosie Cider.
Only gripe is the price of beer here, 3.05 for 4% beers is well OTT.
1 Sep 2009 14:42
The Golden Heart, Nettleton Bottom
Both the last two reviewers are one post members and have a eerily similar patter ??? Make your own minds up! LOL
18 Aug 2009 21:22
Hopback Summer Lightning seems to be a permanent fixture at the bar these day's so well worth a visit if that wonderful brew is to your taste and when I tried it was in perfect condition. Cider list seems to be getting ever longer and more varied - if you count the sweet/medium/dry variations of each type on sale why it must be 25+ now on tap !!!
Also one thing I didn't comment on (and don't usually because pubs are for drinking mainly) is the food here, it's got better and better in recent months and is cheap in price no-nonsense pub grub that compliments a cider nicely. For me, one of the best pubs in Bristol and one that remains true to the traditions of the good old British boozer.
6 Aug 2009 19:02
Not been in for years but gave it a try after hearing good things. Very welcoming and good service with 5 beers on pump on my visit and the Exmoor Gold that I drank was tip top.
As the review below said it lacked character in the past but the sympathetic decoration of the pub seems to have addressed that negative factor and though not many in the atmosphere was good. well worth a look.
6 Aug 2009 18:52
Not been in for a few years so gave it a try again. Nice interior, typical country pub finishings and found 3 real ales on tap in Bath Ales Gem, Butcombe & London Pride + Butcombe Blonde pasteurised on keg which went down a treat on a wet & humid evening - Thatchers Trad real cider also on but look for the electric pump and not the traditional hand pump when at the bar.
On the negative side, it is rather food oriented with many tables being reserved for diners but the small & comfortable bar at the rear of the pub is great so long as there is room plus the welcoming site of a dartboard as well.
Well worth a look!
6 Aug 2009 18:48
Visited again on a Friday evening and all ales were on and in excellent condition especially the ESB which was sublime!
Bar staff very friendly and good at their jobs, very mixed clientle for a Friday eve and a nice atmosphere prevailed. This is fast becoming a firm favourite of mine especially as it's so close to the awful Victoria coach station and everything around that dump is bad so a visit here on the way to my coach makes the trip one whole lot sweeter.
12 Jul 2009 15:05
rainlight's succinct review below sums this pub up to a tee really so not much to add. The hot afternoon I visited was a bit disappointing as most of the ales were off but the Chiswick I drank was beautiful so nay bother at the end of the day. A lot of poncy places in the area so avoid them and visit a decent pub here, I've not found better around these parts.
Also very handy for Victoria coach station just down the road too.
4 Jul 2009 10:53
Yay!!!!!!!!
New bogs at last and well after the Easter date that the local Fullers rep promised me. Bliss, on the hot summers day I had to sit right next to the loos I couldn't smell a thing for the first time in decades.
ESB on top form as usual, staff friendly as ever. Is this really a central London boozer I ask? LOL
4 Jul 2009 10:49
Wow I'm in shock, somebody else who has visited the CH! :-)
Yes Andy it's still as good as ever as you say, one pub where changes don't happen very often because they are doing pretty much the right thing so no need. Though I'm still not sure about the colour scheme in the bar from a while back but after a few beers you don't notice. lol
4 Jul 2009 10:30
Still as good as ever, got there aprox 18:30 on a Monday evening and the gardens were packed already but still beautiful peace & tranquillity prevailed as usual. One of England's finest without any doubt!
4 Jul 2009 10:20
Review below said it all really, cracking location to while away a few hours with excellent conditioned beers & ciders. On the downside small car park - so get there early, no problems. :-)
4 Jul 2009 10:18
The Wild Goose, Combeinteignhead
Have to agree with Steve's review, pub great, beer range great, service great & friendly, location perfect - food overpriced and poor.
Tried 4 meals between myself & Mrs during our week's stay nearby and curry was tasteless with tough meat, pork & cider pot tough meat (Microwave, microwave, microwave!), fish & chips - lovely batter but seemed to have forgot to coat the advertised fillet of fish in it. Hey ho. {sigh}

The White Horse, Parsons Green
Agree with Green Onions re: the locals, but as long as you can dismiss that ...... though at times they really can be quite obnoxious especially if you are looking for a seat.
Always a great atmosphere on Chelsea home match days with a beer festival on my visit. Golden Pride on draught too as were some very strong Meantime brews but 10.5% is way too much to tempt on a hot Saturday dinnertime. Enjoyed a few other lighter brews though and beer condition was superb on all.
It was Chelsea v Fulham that day at Stamford Bridge but not a cross word in sight and a perfectly safe environment outside for families of any age or football club preference which is a nice sight to behold when you hear so much negative rubbish spouted off to the opposite of this.

The Prince Of Wales, Westbury on Trym
Packed on the Friday evening I visited, full of little kiddies with their parents too which I can't say I enjoyed in fact it more resembled a crche than a pub for me. Beer? Butcombe pub but only 2 of their ales on, the Butcombe bitter (IPA being the other) my part drank being very flat, dull & lifeless indeed .... couldn't wait to get out of the place and the hordes of empty glasses hanging around throughout the pub hardly helped it's appeal either sorry to say. Shame, I'd heard good thing and had not been here for a few years and left highly dismayed. On a positive note though, the Butcombe bitter we then drank at The Post Office Tavern up the road was spot on and much more like it as was the atmosphere there also.
11 May 2009 03:52
Went here twice in a week and great both times, as usual. Menu good, but wish they would bring the good old mixed grill back as that was sublime. Beer condition superb on ales tried, as usual and the landlord as friendly as ever (Has he got the deepest voice you've ever heard or what? Nice guy!) as were the other staff. Sadly very empty on both a Friday dinner & Saturday eve which I guess is a sign of the times and the fact that this country pub, as nice as it is, has no real passing trade cannot help. Worrying times for all the licensed trade at present - let's hope great hostelries such as the Neeld Arms march on through as they deserve to.
11 May 2009 03:45
Great pub still but beer quality very poor on my visit as were *real* pint measures too - Tut, tut! Worst pint of Brewers Gold I've drank in a long time and closely watched a disagreement between the two bar staff that were on as to whether there was a problem with the beer or not, put it this way they carried on serving it despite it's poor condition!
7 May 2009 00:08
The White Hart Inn, Margaretting Tye
As excellent as ever, first time I have visited since the refurb last November and it really is as impressive as ever now. Same landlord, same great quality ale & superb food.
Don't even think of passing on this one for another if ever in the area!
7 May 2009 00:05
Love the pub so sadly have to mark it down slightly after recent visits last week where beer quality was well below it's usual standard and was hazy & lifeless. Hopefully this was a one off.
7 May 2009 00:03
The Beaufort Arms, Hawkesbury Upton
Not been in for a while but after watching a day's racing at nearby Castle Combe this was the obvious port of call for a meal and good ale to round a perfect day off. The landlord here is a card and then some, cracking sense of humour! The locals are still as friendly as ever too and the food is still by far the best home cooked, spot on meals that anybody will not fail to enjoy and all at a good price too.
Only had one pint of Bristol beer factory Sunrise due to being the driver on the day so that made me very angry indeed because it was sublime and I could have stayed all evening drinking it but one must always remain sensible ...... I guess. (pffftttttt) 11/10 :- If possible that is!
19 Apr 2009 19:31
Wow, another BITE punter who actually drinks at the Miners! :-)
It is truly a great place to drink, eat and unwind and if you ever bump into one of the regulars ....let's say Sid (THE poet, well Sid thinks so! :-) ) for instance (LOL) - You will truly never, ever forget the Miners and always have fond memories of it. My only regret is that I live so far away (15 miles). I used to work around this way and would always visit the pub on the lunchtime ad I really, really miss that more than I can ever say. In fact I got so much joy from those lunchtime visits and the chats to the locals that I feel teary eyed just thinking back about those times.
19 Apr 2009 19:00
Still the same great pub & great atmosphere - still the same well kept beers + Thatchers & Taunton Trad. Does nobody else visit the Miners? Best pub in the area by a country mile!
2 Apr 2009 05:24
The Ring O Bells, Hinton Blewett
Not quite as good as in the old days pre Butcombe ownership when Johnny was the landlord but still rather good none the less. Seems a bit more food orientated these days with every table taken by diners even on a Monday evening. Usual Butcombe range of beers on tap with the Butcombe Gold and guest ale in Fullers London Pride that we tried in tip-top condition. Also Thatchers Cheddar Valley on draught for the real cider drinkers. It's a great summer pub with lovely relaxed outside seated areas upon the entrance to the pub and creates a very nice sun trap on balmy days should we ever see a summer this year. Good pub, great range of real ales + cider and well worth a visit for those looking for a great country pub just a little of the beaten track. 9/10.
31 Mar 2009 22:39
Very nice Brains pub only a few miles out of Bristol, superb & original interior inc an indoor overhead railway track and hats galore all over the ceiling - you name the hat and it's here! Also the front end of an old 2CV hanging on one wall ....oh and there's a GWR railway carriage in the garden that is a dining area and very nice garden area outside too. This is what pubs should be all about, originality. Brains Reverend James & Butcombe bitter on draught and both were in excellent form and excellent service with a smile including a warm welcome and goodbye from the lady behind the bar. Looked like a really nice & extensive menu too for the foodies. I'll be making sure I return here that's for sure. Well worth a visit, something here for all!
31 Mar 2009 22:33
Popped in for a couple of jars last week and was upset straight away, not by the pub, not by the beer, not by the excellent hosts or any of the punters. So what was wrong then? Finding out that the greatest Beer Emporium Bristol has probably ever seen has just been voted "runner up" by the Bristol CAMRA branch as pub of the year. As a CAMRA member myself of several decades I can only say the Bristol branch members who voted for the *restaurant* over at Mayshill as POTY winner are smoking some seriously strong weed that has distorted their brains usage beyond all reasonable normality!
If this is not the best *BEER* pub in the whole Bristol area by CAMRA's own critique of voting then there is no justice whatsoever - As a long standing member who knows what the judging critique *should be* I feel I can freely and justly state what I have done and frankly the above ridiculous decision to award a food pub (that I visit and like mind!) such a beer award shows I made the correct decision many years ago to not bother attending my local (and often biased to a farcical extent) CAMRA branch meetings.
Anyway rant over (LOL) and it's not important in the *real* world as anyone with more than 2 brain cells who likes good ale will decide for themselves after their very first visit to The Seven Stars that this is beer heaven. Where else in the whole county can you get to try the beers they serve here? Perfect condition time after time and at such reasonable prices. The Otley beers alone are worth a visit, Crouch Vale beers in the Bristol area?!? If you've never been here, you visit and you decide - I can guarantee that you will not be disappointed. The only other proper beer pub that ticks all the boxes anywhere near here is The Old Spot Inn @ Dursley (35+ miles away) and that's saying something - CAMRA national pub of the year a year back and on merit - Really, The Seven Stars is every bit it's equal in all respects. Match that *ANY* one single pub in the Bristol area because in the *real* world there is no other worthy winner.
30 Mar 2009 18:56
Things have really improved here of late. A decent range of well served local ales all in fine fettle, the Uley Pigs Ear being very good indeed. Also complimented by 3 "real" ciders in Thatchers Cheddar Valley & Black Rat and Weston's Old Rosie. Landlady very friendly and good at her job, locals also friendly too. Well worth a try if in the area, on the main road but a large car park at rear of pub.
30 Mar 2009 18:33
The Saracens Head Inn, Symonds Yat East
As good as this pub is, as much as I like it I have to mark this pub down purely on it's outrageous pricing structure. Visited this weekend gone and even weak beers are now over 3.00 in price, a packet of crisps is an insulting 1.20 !!! Whilst waiting at the bar one poor chap had to reach for his credit card to pay for a round of drinks for him and a few friends once told it was 19+ for his round. He asked why so dear and was more or less told it was his fault because they were drinking one of their most expensive lagers in Kronenbourg @ almost 3.50 a pint - this for a lousy Brit brewed fake French lager !!!
My single pint was as good as usual but needless to say I left after just the one, we are in recession yet some pubs continue to insult customers with their pricing. This should make any decent persons blood boil - don't stand for it! Just refuse to pay, walk out and give your custom to a public house that respects your custom by charging you, the customer who should be King after all, an *HONEST* price.
30 Mar 2009 18:29
Yet another visit this week and perfect yet again on every count, just the way it should be! Lovely pint of B&T SOS and MrsX enjoyed her Westons Old Rosie too, staff were excellent and very humorous which really does up the atmosphere and visit enjoyment factor. I always laugh to myself when I leave here and look at the pub sign stating "Greene King" and chuckle thinking this is one pub that even they've not managed to yet sc*ew up despite their record.
26 Mar 2009 15:37
My goodness there are some real numpties on this forum that take offence at other peoples own personal opinion at the drop of the hat .... for goodness sake get out a bit & get a life you people if you are going to get upset just because a member gives *your favourite* pub his/her own personal bad review. What part about BITE's own statement on every single pub page:- "please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously." don't you narrow minded lot understand ??? {sheesh!}
22 Mar 2009 21:02
Dear rotter,
Firstly thank you for your aggressive private message and even more so for your misguided interpretation of my last post. I merely questioned whether you had a vested interest in another Chepstow pub and not once did I say that you either were or were not the landlord of the Coach & Horses so PLEASE get your facts straight before posting headline raising lies and insinuations in future.
I just simply post reviews on what I see and absorb, I have *zero* affinities to any one single establishment and my views are mine only and without prejudice. If another BITE member takes offence of that then that really is quite sad and down to them at the end of the day .... nothing I can do or say that will change that sort of narrow minded viewpoint is there if we are being honest? BITE is a *great* pub guide at the end of the day so let's keep it that way by not getting silly just because one persons *personal* opinion differs from another members own personal viewpoint. Peace & Love! :-)
22 Mar 2009 20:33
Wow, my very first visit and maybe not exactly what I was expecting from the start but very enjoyable none the less ......
Multi roomed pub on different levels and as (expert!) reviewer Quinno rightly stated multi abounding in wood .... it's everywhere! :-) Went in on a very busy Friday night and although, which rather surprised me for a brewery outlet & real ale pub, the average age of the punters was early 20's the atmosphere was excellent and welcoming and even an old git like myself found most punters very polite & friendly which I must say was really nice. The beer was superb (and very cheap!) with "The Artist's Ale" being the standout brew for me by far but all the other beers enjoyed by my party were frankly just as good. So? Love it, love it, love it!!!
The chippy next door is also a welcome post pub situation especially with a bag of chips being a mere 1.10 - Well worth a visit to The Village Inn then !!! :-)
22 Mar 2009 20:07
Very few things remain unchanged in life these day's so thank goodness for The Crown because it never changes! The same old simple things done right year in, year out and a pub that proves the simple ethic that if you get the basics right all else will follow.
Good range of ales, kept & served well, friendly & welcoming service and excellent quality (simple!) home cooked food if required. Sure this pub's beautiful country setting helps, but frankly this pub (meaning the way it is managed & ran) would thrive in any location. Long may The Crown remain this way too!
19 Mar 2009 08:53
Robert Fitz Harding, Bedminster
Drink & service much better of late, nice to be able to spend my CAMRA JDW vouchers in here too and save some dosh. :-)
16 Mar 2009 16:42
Fantastic news for all Ship regulars who wear pegs on their noses when sitting near the loos!
After complaining to Fullers regarding the smell of the loos they have emailed me to inform me that both ladies & gents are getting a total refit around easter time and those bad smells will be a thing of the past ..... one hopes. Yay!
16 Mar 2009 16:38
The White Hart, Littleton on Severn
Been very good of late I must say with ever changing guest ale + the usual Youngs range. The Caledonian Duchers I had on my visit was sublime. Bar was full of drinkers too on a Friday night which was nice to see as (as is more common in this recession) the dinners were nowhere to be seen.
16 Mar 2009 16:35
What did I say?
Sign now up saying "Pub to Let", as it's a Wadworths managed pub they are in effect trying to palm it off. End of the day punters vote with their feet and have done here.
Good building, big car park, nice country location - *If the rent was reasonable* it would be a tremendous venture for someone with the intelligence to re-open it as a proper real ale pub with a good, free of ties range. Do this and it would blow every other country pub in the area for miles straight out of the water.
16 Mar 2009 16:08
The Golden Heart, Nettleton Bottom
Let's start on a positive note, the pub itself is beautiful and endearing and the pint of Festival Gold I drank was OKish. Right, that's the only positives I can mention from my visit - I regret going to this pub so much I am still seething.
I read Florie's earlier review and, foolishly, decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and visit with a colleague for an evening meal. I'm not usually bothered about food ratings on here as it is mainly a pub beer guide but this pub is an eatery and not a drinkers pub so it's fair game and here goes.
Firstly the menu & specials board offer very little that stands out - Other than the prices that is, they *most certainly* stood out! The battered cod I ordered cost a tenner and was the thinnest fillet of cod to grace a plate that I had seen for quite some time, the batter was soft, undercooked at far too low a frying heat (so simple to spot, such a shame the chef (?!?) let it leave his/her kitchen) and the fish itself utterly tasteless. As it was cooked so poorly the fish inside instead of being steamed was a greasy assault on the tongue having ingested so much cooking oil - I've had 49p packets of cheapo fish fingers from Aldi that tasted better than this joke and most certainly better cooked. My colleague had the "prize winning" lamb, the only prize it would have won was blandest piece of lamb of 2009 he said - devoid of any real test at all though he did comment the texture was fine .... marvellous value at almost 13 he did not think. Normally I never shy of complaining especially when receiving rubbish like this but after being up for a straight 20+ hours and on the road for far too long all I wanted to do was get out of this pretentious gourmet wannabe and head home pronto to sleep.
As Florrie rightly questioned, how on earth does this still remain in the GBG?!? They advertise their own food as being special, well sorry it's NOT and that really is something any decent owner should always avoid having such arrogance in claiming and leave to the visiting public to declare yay or nay. Michelin star? Wouldn't win a "Bald Remould" star especially at their prices. Pffttt
7 Mar 2009 20:16
The Railwaymans Arms, Bridgnorth
Wonderful well run pub on the platform of Bridgnorth station on the Severn Valley Railway. On my visit there were 2 real ciders from Thatchers and 6 real ales on pump and a wonderfully eclectic choice but had to go for the Bathams Best after hearing so much about it. More of a golden ale when compared to what one usually expects a Best bitter to be and all the better for being an original, sublime stuff in tip top condition and went down a treat!
The landlord & staff were very attentive and welcoming and the interior being railway themed (of course!) took you back many years and in my opinion all the better for it. Food consists of pork pie or pork pie with Stilton, proper pub grub at last instead of pretentiousness of fine dining! The pork & Stilton pie was sublime and at 1.30 the pub food bargain one would dream of, yes they *really* are that good. Pubs like this will always thrive because they do not pretend they are something they're not, they keep to basic common sense principles of excellent product in excellent condition and welcome their public one and all to the show. You would be a fool to miss this pub if in the area. Top marks!
7 Mar 2009 19:48
Now reverted back to it's previous name:- The Yew Tree Inn.
I've not visited though so no rating or opinion offered.
6 Mar 2009 05:32
Still good, great ESB, Pride & Discovery. But have to mark it down one purely on the landlord's stone faced, unwelcoming nature.
Come on, smile for us - make us all feel welcome! :-) (Bet you anything your trade goes up within a month if you do)
3 Mar 2009 05:51
Has been closed for some time now.
Sign up inviting new gullible rentee's to take over but with the prices some of these pubco's charge I wouldn't hold your breath. Shame, used to be a decent pub going back 20 years ago or so (Showing my age now! lol )
3 Mar 2009 05:45
Looks like it's closed again.
Passed by a few times in day & night over the last week or so and no signs of life. Maybe local Plod have had enough, I don't know.
3 Mar 2009 05:41
Food on my visit was excellent but It's the beer that should count on "Beer"ITE and half the pumps were off and the Box Steam Piston Broke that I drank was as Dandillus described his, dull & lifeless. Pub was pretty empty for the 2 hours I was there so that probably explains why, no turnover.
Couple running the pub were extremely good hosts and are to be commended but what good is that if the ale is naff? Also, that vile green and post office red colour scheme is I would wager a large stumbling block for punters wanting to be inside the pub. Plenty of potential here though so I really would hope to see this place improve in the future going by what I hear about the landlord.
2 Mar 2009 00:51
Beer range has changed in recent months and not for the better either, gone is RCH Pitchfork and far too many dull insipid types such as Butcombe, Courage Best (yawnnnnnnnnnn) now abound which is a great shame. On my Friday eve visit they did have Glastonbury Golden Chalice on tap but sadly it was flat, lifeless and very tired.
The food prices have also risen a bit steeply in places too and in the current financial climate maybe not a wise move and heard several punters complaining about it and deciding to not eat there and move on elsewhere after their drink. 9 for fish & (oven!) chips in a pub is a bit OTT to say the least.
2 Mar 2009 00:41
Have to say the ESB I drank in here last week was the finest drank in my entire life to the best of my memory. My friend who is not such a drinker as am I had to be dragged out by myself kicking and screaming and crying for more ESB! But hey, 4 pints on the afternoon is more than enough for even me. Always the best pub in Soho by a long chalk but sorry, even after visiting for over 25+ years I have to mark it down purely on the state of the Men's loo - stinks to high heaven as it always has done. Come on Fullers, send in Rentokill for goodness sake and end that pong once and for all time .....please!!!
2 Mar 2009 00:33
Usually "13" ciders on these day's a_e_m, they must have had a rush on that day. :-)
Far better of late, menu vastly improved too as well as the beer/cider range since Hugh was moved onwards from the helm here. Champion CAMRA Winter brew Wickwar Station Porter has been a constant regular of late too, yum-yum!
2 Mar 2009 00:26
Very nice couple of pints of Golden Hair on my recent visit which went down a treat. Very empty though for a Friday lunchtime compared to years gone by so whilst waiting for my friend to arrive took a glance at the menu looking for clues. Didn't have to look hard to find the reasons why, almost all meals here are now 9.95 plus!!! Are they having a laugh? We are in recession and they have the cheek to charge these prices for very ordinary pub food, it doesn't take the likes of Sir John Harvey-Jones (if he were still alive of course!) to pay a visit here to work out where the problems lie now does it? A poncy area of Bristol such as Clifton village for example might just get away with such prices but hey - This is Horfield common. I kept my money firmly in pocket needless to say. Pffffffftttt.
20 Feb 2009 07:51
Nice pub but .... sadly on the day of my visit the staff were deeply uninterested in serving and rather more intent on enjoying their ciggies outside. The pint of Deuchars I had was warm though just about within the criteria (otherwise) deeming it fit to be served though decent pubs certainly wouldn't even consider it - obviously just hanging around in the line for far too long. Heard so much about this place but my visit was a complete let down, visited the Ship in Wardour street around the corner and the afternoon got much better as did the beer. Maybe I just had an unlucky visit going by many comments. Ah well.
20 Feb 2009 07:43
Looks like it's closed down when I passed by in the dark on a Friday evening, can anyone else confirm this?
31 Jan 2009 04:34
The Moon and Sixpence, Tintern
Decent range of ales on at a fair price - The Wye Valley Bitter I sampled was superb, nice atmosphere in the pub on the evening visited and probably the best bet in the area right now.
31 Jan 2009 04:29
Oh look another "1 post" member sticking up for a pub. "The pub has never sold Bass..." No disrespect but utter poppycock my friend! I too live locally and have been visiting the pub for over 30 years back to the day's when Bet was landlady, in fact it's my fathers local who lives only 200 yards from the pub and I can assure you 101% that Bass has and was a regular beer at the White Hart for years along with the insipid Courage Best.
As I said in my recent review - it *is* a nice pub and always has been but it's the mega dull beer range that let's it down and always has. To be fair back in Bet's day it was a Courage tied house so she had no choice but in 2009 they do have choice and no excuses. Pubs serving such a dull beer range as they do are 10 a penny these days and customers will look further afield for something else that will tantalise their taste buds and you only have to drive less than 3 miles in almost any direction from this pub to find a better choice. Customer is king and they vote with their feet.
22 Jan 2009 10:44
Dead quiet on my recent visit and the beer range was hardly a joy either, Wadworths 6X or IPA in this day and age of choice will hardly pull the punters in. How or why would a pub of this size only have 2 real ales on tap beggars belief - I know it is a managed Wadworths pub but if they put the full range on and carried 1 or 2 guests this place would have much more appeal and might actually pull punters through the door on a regular basis.
The trouble with pubs like this though is that they have relied on the food trade for far too long and took it for granted whilst they let the wet side of the trade go to pot. Credit crunch arrives, oh look now the restaurant is empty as nobody has the spare cash to splash out. Drinks especially the beer, lager, cider are far too expensive and if they don't employ some common sense in their approach here will be yet another of the 5 pubs per day going to the wall I kid you not the writing is so clearly on the wall.
22 Jan 2009 10:32
Not really much to add to Blackthorn's review which pretty much sums this pub up nicely. Had dinner here yesterday and must say the food was of the highest quality, not that I judge pubs listed on this guide for food as it is "Beer" ITE after all but thought it worth a mention.
Beer range is great here, ever changing range of aprox 7 ales usually localish ones from nearby micos and on my visit included Cheddar Pot Holer and Bristol Beer Factory's award winning Milk stout which was sublime! One thing also to mention is that they still sell Thatchers trad cider on draught despite the 2009 GBG not mentioning this.
22 Jan 2009 10:06
As said, hidden off the back of the tiny High Street this is a hidden gem in very relaxed surroundings. Low ceilings and wooden beams dominate once inside with a lovely wood burning stove to warm the cockles. Youngs pub so their beers dominate of course with the usual range of Bitter, Special, Winter Warmer and Charlie Wells Bombardier on my visit which was in top nick. Well worth a try along with the ever excellent Plough just around the corner.
22 Jan 2009 10:00
Robert Fitz Harding, Bedminster
Yeah think you summed the service problem up a_e_m, there's one particular barmaid that has been there for some time and whenever she's on forget getting served in a hurry as a) She's so slow to serve and b) She spends half her time gassing to regulars & friends. Not very professional at all - Manager *please* take note as this has been going on for ages and it's just plain rude and poor customer service and even my sarky comments/hints about this to her waft straight over her head.
Must say though apart from all the points in a_e_m's review about the clientle the beer range and condition has been tip-top for some while here now which is nice to say about any JDW outlet. Shame it's 1/2 a mile round trip to the loos as well!
11 Jan 2009 19:23
The Black Horse, Clapton in Gordano
Wow .... at last!
Looks like they have now bowed to customer requests and are now doing a regular "guest ale", on my Friday evening visit it was Skinners Cornish Knocker and it was in supreme condition straight from the cask. Very refreshing to see this change and how nice to see a Cornish beer other than the insipid Sharps "Gloom" Bar in our county.
11 Jan 2009 19:09
Wonderful place! Only bar in Britain still that has only an "apple" licence I think, i.e. they cannot sell beers, spirits etc.
Never seems to change here which is just great, sit back with a pint of Cheddar Valley and enjoy a good chat ... just like it should be. Brilliant range of fruit wines on sale too as well as the cider & perry. If you are looking for a nice bottle of Magners over ice or one of those fancy "pear" ciders then don't even bother coming in here as you will be laughed out of Devon! :-)
23 Dec 2008 22:08
Nice pub, dull beer range & poor beer quality. Usual (for the area) mega dull range inc the likes of Bass, Butcombe etc. (yawwwwwwnnnnnnn)
Also very expensive too. Great setting in a small village next to church, nice stone walled lounge, great beer garden but oh so let down by the above. Far better when "Big Stan" was at the healm but they still had a boring beer selection back then to be fair.
18 Dec 2008 13:06
Agree with the review below re: charm/ambiance. But compared to so many other pubs in the locality I would say you get by far the best conditioned & served pint of Broadside or Adnams bitter here, the only other pub that competes for well kept Adnams would be The Station Arms in nearby Southminster which has to be by far the best beer pub in this part of Essex so it's high praise for the beer condition here to compare the two.

The White Hart, Littleton on Severn
OK so most people seem to feel that the food is for want of a better word .. rubbish. I go to pubs to drink myself and rarely eat at any of my locals but I must say that the food that comes out of the kitchen does not look that great to my eyes and the prices charged for such small portions of "outdated" (It's all mid 1980's menu fodder and nothing to shout about) cuisine are daylight robbery. However, let's try and say something nice about the pub .......
Back in the good old day's, when people mainly went to pubs to *drink*, this place was a corker and packed to the rafters because of that. Sure they still did food back then but the highlight was the Smiles Ales on tap .... oooh for a pint of good old Exhibition these days or a Bristol Stout. Ever since Smiles sold off their pubs/went bust and Youngs took over this place has been on the slide and beer quality very iffy indeed and the management concentrated so much on food forgot about the drinkers and frankly showed little respect to them and the many locals that frequented - drinkers sought pastures new and White Hart becomes overpriced, poncy country restaurant.
However in the last year the place has been tarted up a bit, seen new management and the beer quality has been very high overall throughout so BRAVO for that! So it's clearly not drink where this place is failing. No, as said by so many other reviewers it's the overpriced, outdated, iffy food that has taken this pub right off the map and these day's in Britain's hard times our country pubs out in the sticks rely so much on food income they cannot afford to slip up on such an important part of their business. If you look in the kitchen on a Friday night you will see it is chock ablock with staff and servers yet the pub itself barely a third full with a car park that you used to have a job getting into is these day's almost empty.
So they have the drink side right now but no drinkers, I bet they wished they had handled things with a bit more respect towards the locals/regulars a few years back now but it may just be too late. I still enjoy a pint here now & again but such a shame the bar is so empty.

The Queens Head, Stow on the Wold
Fantastic pub! Warm welcome from staff & locals, superb pint of Donnington SBA and just a lovely place to while away a winters afternoon, the interior of this place is just sublime, exactly what a stone built country pub should be like and totally unspoilt by anything modern thank goodness - even a piano. Easily the best pub in Stow and the cheapest & best ale too. Can't wait to revisit!
12 Dec 2008 13:13
Not the most informative review as the landlord was leaving on the day I visited with the new guy literally just taking over as I walked in.
Firstly it's in a fantastic location with sublime views across the forest of Dean, very nice beer garde at the rear too. They had Thwaites Best, Hobgoblin & Brains - The Reverend James on my brief visit with the Brains TRJ being the single best pint of said beer I have ever sampled so I was a happy bunny.

The Post Office Tavern, Bristol
Agree with TT about the inside needing a freshen up. Still a nice place for a drink with a mainly older crowd in on the night in question, service was excellent.
Went in on a Friday night for first time in ages, had a pint of beer from the newish brewery at Hambrook (Can't remember name sorry) and it was superb, real old style best bitter at it's very best and in great condition. Don't know if this is a permanent addition to the range but well worth a look in if it is as the rest are the usual easy to find dull beers ala Butcombe, Otter, yawn yawn ....
25 Nov 2008 15:32
OK, very quiet on the Friday night I visited but then I guess everyone must have been opposite in the Beaufort as that was packed to the rafters. Beer OK, only 2 real ales on in Uley bitter and 1 other that was so inspired a choice I forget ..... probably Butcombe or similar. Landlord very friendly and welcoming as were the locals that were in that night who all said goodbye to our crowd, so yeah well worth a look in but would be even better if they had some more inspired beer choices on tap.
10 Nov 2008 13:16
Now been turned into a 3.50 a meal carvery ...... heaven knows what the food's going to be like at that price, especially going by previous comments on poor quality by other members here.
Nah, don't think I'll be exactly in a rush to come here for a beer in a hurry anytime soon.
30 Oct 2008 11:19
Still as good as ever, enjoyed a couple of pints of Betty Stoggs here last week and another superb meal yet again. Staff very friendly as are the locals who make you very welcome indeed.
Like a lot of pubs in the area they seem to be quite empty at the moment due to financial climate & end of tourist season which is a big shame because they deserve better. Does not help with the pub being off the main road either I guess. But well worth a visit and 20 seconds off the A30, one of Cornwall's finest by a long way!
30 Oct 2008 11:04
Funny though rotter, everyone who has reviewed this pub seems to like it and I am a fairly frequent visitor myself and not once have I experienced such a situation as you describe .... and as I stated in my original review I am not even a fan of JDW pubs in general.
After reading all of your other pub reviews (all Chepstow public houses) one cannot help but wonder if you are the landlord of The Coach and Horses (The only one you praise and claim to spend every single day of your like in too.), Chepstow who, as are most other pubs in the town, taking a right old battering trade wise due to a JDW pub being on their doorstep serving great range at very keen prices.
I do apologise if you are not and your complaint genuine but sorry, I smell something fishy and of the dead trout variety here. :-)
30 Oct 2008 10:56
Where do I start? Well for one the prices I guess are the first thing you notice once inside the Seven Stars and look around the walls - 1.50 a pint on ALL Sharps beers all-day every Wednesday!!! 2 a pint on ALL real ales between 14:30-18:30 every day!!! How do they do it? Beer must be stale or out of condition at those prices, right? Wrong! Great range of beers and in tip-top condition on all ales I and my friend tried and the landlord still wouldn't serve a fresh barrel of Doom Bar because its was still just "not quite" ready despite being asked by several punters, quality control seems to be a key factor at the Seven Stars I noticed. Bravo!
1:00 PM arrived and all of a sudden the pub was packed out with office workers from nearby who obviously know value when they see it and know quality when they taste it. Young & old, male & female all seemed to be having a great time and frankly (IMHO) this is what makes a good pub a superb pub. Just visit say Champion CAMRA pub of the year The Old Spot @ Dursley and you will see exactly the same ethos regarding beer and exactly the same clientele mix and the same great atmosphere and hear the cash register go kerching, kerching non stop. It's a wining formula and I'm surprised that so many other pubs just don't get it and copy it. It's not like the Seven Stars is on a main road even to get noticed by passers by, it is hidden down an alleyway so if a pub in that location can do it then others can too.
Very friendly landlord, nothing too much trouble and as they don't do food they don't mind customers bringing in their own on a dinnertime either which is yet another addition to a winning formula and something I have advocated pubs that don't do food instigate for years. It's common sense and reasonable too.
Well I guess apart from all the above I liked the Seven Stars! :-) 10/10 - No brainer if you want the best central-ish pub in Bristol by a country mile. Keep up the good work guy's!
30 Oct 2008 10:39
Had visited before a few years back but the place has been under new ownership since and very well run indeed.
Beer was superb with 4 real ales on tap, the Brains SA Gold on my visit was excellent and the food looked very good indeed with punters raving about it once they had retired from their meal for a drink in the bar. Good friendly staff & locals.
25 Oct 2008 18:53
A bit dead all last week, couldn't understand why really because the beer was good (The Skinners Cornish Blonde being outstanding) and usually a well attended pub especially when you consider it is in a large village with no other real competition.
Many pubs in the area were the same last week on my Cornwall visit so maybe the current financial situation is biting deeper. Still a nice pub, friendly service and compared to the outrageous charges at the nearby Bowgey Inn the beer was well priced for the area.
25 Oct 2008 18:40
Not been in for a whole year but timed it right on a jaunt back from Cornwall to hit the car park at exactly 12:00. Oh bliss! The Bridge is a haven in a world that is ever changing with so many once great pubs going either downhill or worse still bust. Apart from a couple of licks of paint and a visit by Her Maj a few years back nothing changes here at all in the 20+ years that I have been visiting, in fact some of the conversations you can get involved in when seated inside the tiny bar are worth admission alone, never mind the fine ale & great dinnertime food. Yesterday's treat involved Nigel (The landlady's husband) being asked if he knew some old RAF boy who had just fitted an aero "Jet Engine" to his ageing Japanese saloon car .... Only at the Bridge! I could hardly drink my beer due to tears streaming down my face, the old boy telling the tale was a card and then some. Quality pub = Quality punters, fact!
Oh the beer, that was as good as ever of course. Yellowhammer went down a treat and just wished I could have tried the special 111 year anniversary ale that Branoc had specially brewed for the pub celebrating just that - 111 years in the same family. So to sum the Bridge up? Marvellous, just flippin' marvellous - and long may it NEVER change.
25 Oct 2008 18:34
Much better on my recent visit now Luke is the new manager. Beer quality was fine but very disappointed that despite there being an extensive, and decent, guest ale list on the chalk board every single one of them was unavailable. Not the biggest Hidden beer fan myself so was somewhat peeved to say the least, probably just one of those days though. Service & atmosphere beyond fault though - which is nice to say once again.
18 Oct 2008 12:50
Just been tarted up a bit inside and looks good. Beer and chat as good as ever though possible bad news I'm afraid, seems current management team Paul & Dee are soon leaving for pastures new to take helm at one of the small local Dawkins chain - I know not which one as of yet. Let's hope Bath Ales get it right this time with their replacements unlike when they left the Welly some years back.
15 Sep 2008 19:19
Now back in the 2009 Good Beer Guide and deservedly so.
Some interesting guest ales on of late too with the excellent Pilton Pop being on in my recent visit.
15 Sep 2008 19:07
Great pub and a Good Beer Guide regular for many years now, beautiful setting right by the canal (You can take your drinks up there should you wish btw) and Slimbridge WWT 1/2 a mile away. Also the pub has a small hotel & camping next to it as well.
Big refurb a year or so ago and done to a very high standard, mainly a food establishment but don't let that put you off as the beer is usually in superb condition. Usually 5/6 real ales on + Black Rat cider & either a guest cider or perry, Westons perry on draught on my recent visit which is very rare in this part of the country. If you are coming from the Bristol area it's a great combo going firstly to British pub of the year - The Old Spot Inn @ Dursley and then visiting this gem at 1/2 time before your journey back to the smoke - making sure that you havea designated driver of course because as hard as you try you will never taste all the great ales between these two pubs. :-)
6 Sep 2008 17:32
The Bowl Inn, Lower Almondsbury
Went in again for first time in over 18 months to give it another try. Two pints of 4.0 abv ale now = 6.30 !!!!!
3.15 a pint! And the beer was not even in great condition either, acceptable yes but *only just*. Credit crunch? I hope pubs like this go to the wall to be frank when they insult and rip off their clientele in such a manner especially as the going local rate being an already steep 2.70 in most other pubs on average.
6 Sep 2008 17:15
Brains brewery gastro pub on the A38 just outside of Thornbury. A decent range of brews inc usually Brains bitter, Reverand James + guest. Also Thatchers Cheddar Valley real cider on draught - don't let the electric pump fool you.
Nice garden areas at back, so long as there are not too many kiddies in the place it's an alright place for a decent drink. Food oriented of course if you just want to drink but if you don't visit until after 21:00 like myself then it's not too bad at all compared with most pubs in the area.
2 Sep 2008 15:24
Maybe it's a good thing you've not yet met the landlady Quinno, yet again an_ecunemical_matter hits the nail firmly on the head in his summing up. Even the "Mona Lisa" managed to raise a smile once when she blew off so surely this good lady could smile now and again. Sorry but it has to be said, very poor attitude she displays and lacks any charm or grace. What "decent" host would start stacking the stools/chairs on top of the tables a whole hour before closing time is even called? None I know that's for sure! As said, landlord seems fine but this lady has all the charm of a rattlesnake and it's little wonder that apart from weekends the Shakey is often very empty.
Apart from this .... Beer range is good and served in fine fettle. Outside area's very relaxing and most of the punters good people with a nice bit of music & live gigs. Gent's toilets are shameful though and stink and often this can waft through the whole pub putting one right off their ale and one also finds feet sticking to the carpet whilst walking. There are sadly too many things to dislike about this place that could so easily be corrected with a bit of cleaning, paint, charm & personality.
2 Sep 2008 15:11
Wonderful country village pub. Selection of ever changing local brews on tap and served in fine condition also the sublime Budvar Czech lager on draught. The food is all home cooked and of an excellent standard, the mixed grill consisting of the finest local produce being a standout. Landlord and staff are very friendly and provide a warm welcome.
Best pub in Wiltshire? For me it easily is and every person I have taken here agrees, even my wife loves it and she can't abide most pubs as a rule.
1 Sep 2008 16:14
Very sad to hear of the recent passing away of ex landlord & owner Ric Sainty, what a character he was.
Very jealous that Quinno found Sarah Hughes on sale his visit, not had it myself in years:-) Though the Oakham JHB on sale on my last visit was probably the single best pint of bitter I have drunk this whole year.
Dyson hand dryer? Personally it's one of the main reasons I visit, to quote Uncle Bryn from Gavin & Stacy - "It's fantastic!". No truly, it really is and well worth a visit to the freshly upgraded lavvies for. It's a 40 mile round trip for me to visit this pub but one that is always worth it and I always make sure I am not the driver.
26 Aug 2008 22:47
Great pub, narrow car park entrance so don't overdo it on the ale! Very friendly welcome, excellent condition ever changing real ales in supreme condition. On my visit were two ales I had not seen in a long while in Jennings Cocker Hoop & Wadworths Farmers Glory with the Jennings being superb. Right next to the canal with two very nice large rear garden areas. Can't wait to visit again!
26 Aug 2008 22:31
The Saracens Head Inn, Symonds Yat East
As said, a perfect location by the riverside. Both beer & food excellent with a good range of usually 5-6 real ales (including Theakstons Old Peculier & 2 Wye Valley brews) and a real cider on tap. I have never had a beer served in anything other than supreme condition here for the 20+ years I have been coming here - can't say fairer than that.
Lovely outside seating area at both pub (covered) & riverside levels both offering superb views of the Wye, the intruiging rope/boat crossing to Symonds Yat West and much more. Classic pub & location all in one and a no brainer to wile away a summer's afternoon at.
10 Aug 2008 21:52
The Plume of Feathers, Bristol
What a shame it has turned into such a dump, was great only just a few years ago when Mark & Cyril were running the place and the beer back then was superb but with good old Cyril behind the bar it would be.
BTW, does anybody know if Cyril is still running the Mayors Arms these day's? Not seen him for a few years now.
7 Aug 2008 08:50
Along with the Bridge Inn at Topsham one of the finest pubs in all of England! You will not find a better setting than this to relax and drink. Great conditioned beer range all served from the barrell plus a real cider too. Hopback Summer Lighting is to die for and the food at lunchtimes is superb. I took a friend here for the first time who is not easily impressed and even he said it was probably one of the best pubs that he had ever visited.
I just *love* the quiet areas in the garden too, badly haved children be warned! :-)
4 Aug 2008 12:40
Lovely pint of Brewers Gold in the garden on a summers day, perfect. Food looked good too, about the best pub in the area and such a wonderful setting too in Constable country.
4 Aug 2008 12:31
Much better in recent times! Still totally food orientated which is such a big shame because pubs of this size can always make room for a pure drinking area instead of people standing at the bar blocking service to all. Beer condition was very good with Abbott Ale going down a treat. Shame they no longer sell a real cider in such a country pub but at least it's way better a pub than it was say 2 years back.
31 Jul 2008 08:00
Now 3 regular *real* ciders in Thatchers:- Trad, Cheddar Valley & Black Rat + the usual changing guest cider. With Trad @ 2 a pint surely the best priced cider in the central Bristol area?
31 Jul 2008 07:55
Popped in a few times in the last few weeks on balmy summer day's, OK so it tipped down the first visit! As superb as ever, beer & cider in A1 condition and the excellent food & service ditto. A recent adittion has been Thatchers draught pear cider on keg, a big hit with the ladies the landlord told me. And after a tasting and although not a "real" product or indeed a proper perry surely far better than drinking that vile Magners mouthwash.
So unchanged at the Crown and may this always be the case when a pub is being run this well!
31 Jul 2008 07:51
Only pub I know of in the area that serves a decent pint of ESB. Worth going to just for that in my book.
Nice large garden at rear, all beer is well kept, staff very friendly and good at their jobs, menu a bit poncy and ott on price though. Oh for the old day's when one could (simply have the choice to..) buy a mere pork pie at lunchtime instead of feeling as though they have just been mugged after checking their wallet contents post pub visit after lunch.
7 Jul 2008 00:42
As a.e.m. rightly stated it is *much* better now the previous manager has left! Much, much better.
I've not enjoyed coming to the Welly since Paul & Dee left for the Hare on the Hill but now the pub seems to be back in safe hands once again with a team that know what they are doing. Beer was superb especially the Spa which was top notch.
20 Jun 2008 18:41
@ hogshead ~ The Cask Marque sign is upside down due to John's contempt for the way that the scheme is run. His explanation to me was that everybody knows "Egon Ronay" for instance and what it stands for but ask the average Joe in the street what "Cask Marque" is and stands for and hardly anybody knows apart from real ale aficionados of course. I understand his point.
Popped in a few weeks back for the first time in over a year and as great as ever and John was of course still there. retirement? pah. :-) Can't wait until next year's Essex jaunt to visit one of England's finest yet again. 10/10.
20 Jun 2008 18:32
The Station Arms, Southminster
{Rating Unchanged} ~ Still as good as ever and the locals and staff VERY friendly indeed. Beer spot on, Westons cider on draught too. Shame I have to wait another whole year before my next visit. Ah well, all good things come to those who wait.
20 Jun 2008 18:24
I am not generally a fan of Wetherspoon aircraft hangers and can usually find far better places to drink, however... I have paid 5 or 6 visits to The Bell now and must say it's one of the better branches of JDW by far. Beer quality has been spot on every single visit and the relaxing ambience enjoyable and very plush it is too. Not a single grumble either after my usual request for staff to remove the sparkler/creamer before pulling my pint either which is refreshing - Wish JDW would learn how to serve their ales properly though without the stupid piece of plastic. Though it is well known they buy "short date" draught ale so maybe this is their hidden reasoning behind that ploy?
I've not visited on an evening so can't comment on that aspect though, nice outside seating area too. I like it, I like it a lot even though it totally lacks any "olde world" charm and is all chrome, marble & wood. Well done so far JDW!
12 Jun 2008 12:24
Oh dear! A GBG stalwart since it's launch in the 1970's and one of the best pubs around has sadly now had to close it's doors for good mainly due to council red tape and propaganda. Mainly due to not being allowed to have their small "A Frame" sign on the main Tintern road advertising it's wherabouts, in fact after talking to ex-landlord Steve yesterday he even received a suspended 6 month prison sentance due to keeping the sign on the main road!
A very, very sad day indeed especially for the regulars however Steve has relocated 1/2 a mile away in The Anchor next to Tintern Abbey so at least that is of some comfort. The Post Office/shop also is sadly to close at the end of this month. It's enough to make you cry especially knowing that 4 pubs a week are now closing you would have thought that the local council would have protected this institution so shame on them!
26 May 2008 08:29
Why am I sorry? A = Because I really want to like the pub bearing in mind it's location etc as there are far too few decent pubs in the Lyme area worth a visit as it is so it's such a shame that the beer is so poor.
1 May 2008 10:26
Not been in for over 10 years but the Ship never seems to change, thank goodness! I first visited around 25 years back and I can't recall it looking much different back then inside, the loos are still as bad and small as many have commented already but that's about the only negative. Good old fashioned London boozer with the full Fullers draught ale range and probably the best and most eclectic CD collection anywhere. Very friendly service on my visit from the Aussie bar staff and reasonable beer prices too for the Soho area unlike some nearby neighbours.
So in all, a London pub as it used to be and still should be a million miles apart from nearby theme pubs and a good range of well kept Fullers ale. Who could ask for more?
1 May 2008 10:15
Well chopin I'm sorry to say that I have to agree with you on the beer condidtion, how this has been a GBG regular I shudder at the very thought! I have tried this pub on several occasions and the beer has been naff on each visit. They seem to be far more interested in getting meals out to tourists instead of being a public house that prides themselves on serving a decent pint. Avoid! Nags Head several hundred yards up the hill a far wiser choice.
18 Apr 2008 23:18
Best pub in Lyme bar none! Not saying much I know but it is truly a proper notch above all the others. Good seection of well kept real ales, friendly staff & locals. Well worth a visit if in the area, certainly non of the others are I'm sad to say.
18 Apr 2008 23:15
The White Hart Inn, Margaretting Tye
Wonderful multi-award winning country pub. Good selection of real ales all in superb condition plus good food at fairly reasonable prices. Can't ait until I'm passing through next month wehn it should be warm enough to sit outside and while away a few relaxing hours with a good brew. Bliss!
7 Apr 2008 04:22
"age yellowed" glasses ?!? Frankly never noticed this Pilkington, don't tell Mick or he will put the Cider up in price yet again! :-)
31 Mar 2008 21:09
Nice Fullers pub with the range generally in good condition apart from the ESB which all too often is badly conditioned, cloudy despite Fullers major efforts & changes in getting their premium brew out to their outlets in tip-top nick. Back in the day when I was in the trade I never had any problems keeping/serving ESB at all so I do wonder why so many pubs (Especially Fullers own pubs!) *still* have problems considering Fullers now cellar it longer before sending it out frankly making it childs play to keep/serve?!?
31 Mar 2008 21:02
Fake brass, nautical wall coverings and "olde world" prints abound here - fake pub in a box anyone? As said, now a Marstons Tavern and the bland, inspid (You really could be drinking anything sadly, do Martsons sample their own beer outside the Midlands?), bad travelling Pedigree on draught. However, although I prefer Spa as a rule, the Bath Ales Gem I switched to after the Pedi was served in excellent condition and really went down a treat. Nice seated outside area by the docks to escape that fake pub in a box interior I am glad to say and that in itself redeems this place scoring it a fair 6/10.
31 Mar 2008 20:55
Small. Very, very small - tiniest pub in the whole of Bristle in fact. Great little boozer, beer always in good nick here and food nice too. Probably the best pub in the area these day's and well worth a look should you be visiting central Bristle.
31 Mar 2008 20:44
"please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously."
Oh dear, some honest views by regular posters here seems to have upset a whole host of "1 Post" newbies who have never commented on *ANY* other public house on BITE. How strange? Who could *they* really be? lol A scripture from the good book back at ye Preacherman - "The taking of offense is what lies in the bosom of the stupid one". Ecclesiastes 7 v8. Amen. :-)
17 Mar 2008 11:54
The Victoria Inn, Westbury On Trym
Maybe not quite as good as it was pre Wadworths 20 years back when the beer range was superb including Adnams Broadside & Tanglefoot etc, etc but still not a bad place at all. Very welcoming staff, quick service and a pleasent atmosphere to enjoy a decent pint. Nice garden to the side too. Can be difficult to park close by at times.
6 Mar 2008 11:04
Oh my, not been in for years until this week but left before buying a drink. Let's just say you should maybe pump yourself up with song's such as "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting!" by Elton John or similar before you dare venture here. Young crowd, unwelcoming atmosphere, no thanks!
As TerryTibbs rightly stated, much better pubs in W-O-T village. In fact go less than 1/2 a mile in any direction from here and you will find fairly decent pubs in the Mouse, Victoria, P.O.T., White Horse or Price of Wales. Just don't go here and think all other pubs in the area are similar joints - they are not thankfully.
6 Mar 2008 10:59
OK so it is a bit of a tourist trap (who told them where it was?) and visiting on a Saturday dinnertime as I did yesterday is probably the worst time of the week in facing that aspect but that aside the Turf is still one of my very favorite pubs in England. I've met more real characters in this pub than probably any other I've been in and you always get a friendly welcome from the regulars and the service I've always found both friendly & efficient.
The beer I sampled was in superb condidtion yesterday, especially the Summertime Ale which was glorious. Also how many pubs do you know with an outside "no smoking" front garden too? Brilliant! GK have showed that they can run a pub properly by simply leaving it alone pretty much and allowing it to be what it always has been - A classic English ale house. Love it, despite yesterday's tourists with their multitude of cameras. :)
2 Mar 2008 11:56
Yes well done Steve, Belinda and of course Ric on National Pub of the Year!!!
I must admit I'm not so happy about the recent-ish policy on guest beers being loacal due to the carbon footprint situation but I do understand Steve's decision to go down this route even if it does mean you can't get to try beers from far a field anymore apart from at the regular beer festivals here. Other than this nothing much changes at the Old Spot just the same old simple things being done to perfection leading to a packed pub on a daily basis (Are not ALL the "great" pubs this way though?). Just wish it was nearer to home that's all.
29 Feb 2008 18:29
Robert Fitz Harding, Bedminster
Much better of late, apart from the old couple sat in the booth behind me effing and blinding at each other all night.... cheap booze/Weatherspoons & delinquent OAP's sadly seem to go hand in hand all over the country I'm afraid. {sigh}
Guest beer range far better, tried a pint of Archers Crystal Clear which would have been perfect if not served through the dreaded sparkler/creamer which any fool knows ruins a good pint and not how it should be served. Those niggles aside could not fault it and I've not enjoyed drinking in here for a few years so more than happy to see it returning gradually to somwhere near it's potential.
15 Feb 2008 16:28
Oh no! What has happened to this once wonderful pub? Sadly I have to agree with "a_e_m"'s review below.
I thought I was being served by Neanderthal Man to be honest on my recent visit. Music blasting out so loud it was impossible to hold a conversation.Well Hidden brewery, if this is the best you can offer after Ross & Karen's departure to pastures new you can stick your pub where the sun does not shine! I will not be back until you dismiss the fools who are ruining this once fine ale house.
7 Feb 2008 10:10
The Beaufort Arms, Hawkesbury Upton
Top, top pub! Landlord & locals very friendly indeed. A great range of ever changing real ales served in supreme condition and the wonderful Wickwar Screech real cider on draught too. This pub hits the mark on every count.
3 Feb 2008 12:51
Closed down as of 13/01/08. Looks like Mr Craze has gone bust sadly.
27 Jan 2008 14:02
Landlord/Brewer Steve has now left to enjoy retirement so sadly no more Eagles Bush beers being brewed on site by the looks of things. New couple running it don't seem to have much of a clue and the place has returend to the clicky locals joint it always was which is such a big shame as this was an oasis in the desert.
24 Jan 2008 00:00
The White Horse, Parsons Green
Great range of well kept real ales and imported lagers all very well priced for this area of London too. Nice covered, seated & heated outside area at the front to while away those balmy summer/winter hours. Food prices well OTT though. A very good outside BBQ on CFC home match days.
1 Jan 2008 19:11
Sadly like most pubs in the locality, bit of a dump and don't expect a decent pint. Again spoilt by a rough crowd just as the nearby Cross Hands also is.
1 Jan 2008 19:07
Maybe not as good as it was in years gone by but still one of the better city centre pubs in Bath. Good selection of well kept real ales and a good selection of lunchtime meals.
1 Jan 2008 18:49
The White Hart, Littleton on Severn
Vastly improved as of late. New manager, pub has been cleaned at long last and redecoration also. I had to send a beer back but the manager dealt with me and my complaint sorted out poilitely in a jiffy with no problems whatsoever. Exactly how it should be.
Still a Youngs (Read Charlie Wells!) pub and mainly food oriented of course but that aside well worth a visit still even for the drinker.
28 Dec 2007 21:32
@ Bob_Sherunkle
Can confirm that pub is now open all day and no longer closes @ 3:00 pm. HTH.
24 Oct 2007 09:41
Yes Lord.Lucan and if you check all these new reviews of the pub you strangely find that it's each persons *only* pub review on the whole site too! LOL
Jokers indeed, make up all the things you want about this place "1 posters" but facts remain facts - it truly is an awful pub!
15 Oct 2007 12:06
Nice place, nice location, great drinks. So what's wrong with it then?
Rip-off pricings is what! Better part of 3 a pint for most ciders when you can simply pop around the corner to the far superior Orchard and pay 1.85/2 for exactly the same pint of Thatchers/Hecks/Richs etc, etc. Food? I ordered a pie, a little pie at that only then to be told that each addition to said little pie would be a further 1. So yes would I like peas? 1 please. Gravy sir? 1 please. Mash sir? 1 please .... and so on. So a little plate of average pie, mash, gravy and peas being the better part of a tenner for a lunchtime's snack - Are they having a laugh or what? Forget trendy places like this there are far better cider outlets in the area with far more *real* character (Orchard - Hannover sq, Blue Flame - Nailsea) and people in attendance and where they don't take the mick over pricings and you won't need to take out a mortgage simply to pay for dinner and a pint!
20 Sep 2007 12:27
Not much I can add to "alehouses" review really other than the building is 2 old cottages knocked into 1 and the outside areas are very nice. Great range of gravity poured ales and Thatchers Trad cider on draught. Food is excellent and well priced. Thatchers cider co only 2 miles down the road at Sandford so a good excuse to drop in for a pint before buying a few gallons of cider. :-)

The Black Horse, Clapton in Gordano
Back in the Good Beer Guide for 2008 and deservedly so! Still as good as ever.
7 Sep 2007 13:52
This pub has been a Good Beer Guide stalwart for as long as I can remember, it has now been removed from the 2008 GBG which is to be publicly launched on 12/9/07. I have my copy in front of me and can confirm this.
Why?
Because of consistent poor beer quality over a period of almost 12 months is why as a number of people, myself included, have stated here. So don't shoot the messenger, maybe question the landlord Phil perhaps?
7 Sep 2007 13:48
Like you TWG I keep forgetting this hidden gem and every time I return I wonder why. Usually 3-4 ciders on draught in fact and now including one guest cider. Recent ciders have been Old Rosie, Hecks Kingston Black and champion cider of Britain 2007 Janet's Jungle Juice. And unlike the stupid Apple cider barge around the corner that caters for yuppies and twits @ almost 3 a pint all the ciders here are around the 2 ish mark - superb!
Beer is always in good condition too and the food is very cheap and very good, superb range of sandwiches too. I'm determined never to forget this pub again and as it's a nice sunny day today ... why not I ask myself.
8 Aug 2007 08:59
sniffer's review say's it all really. It's a great place in summer to while away the hours though sat outside looking at the muddy banks of the Severn.
Beer is always in tip top condition and a nice pint of Thatchers Trad real cider on tap too. It can get very crowded, you can get there at 12:00 on a dinnertime thinking you are early and guaranteed a seat only to be beaten by 2 coachloads of OAP's on a daytrip. {sigh}. Overall, nice pub, well manged and great range of drinks for all with wonderful views.

The Post Office Tavern, Bristol
Hahaha, loved that comment oldbore about the PoT's problem - so true! But maybe that's what add's to it's charm prehaps? No chance of getting knifed by some chav wearing a hoodie in here people. :-)
Been visiting the PoT @ WoT forover 20 years and though I probably prefer it in years gone by under previous regimes it still has many things going for it and the same thing it's always had really that makes it what it is. Good range of ales, very nice home made pizzas and a very nice calm atmosphere when compared to say rougher pubs a mere 1/4 of a mile away in WoT village. I have always liked this pub and happy to say that I still like it over 20+ years later in 2007 - all to rare to be able to say such things these day's.
10 Jun 2007 17:12
The Huntsman and Hounds, Althorne
Beers served in very poor condition through the dreaded sparklers here sadly, between them you could have been drinking anything they were that insipid. Bar staff not very attentive at all either unless you are a regular it seemed. One visit was more than enough to ensure we do not return. For much better food & a great pint of Adnams bitter or Broadside a visit to The Three Horsehoes on the other side of the village would be far wiser, 2 meals for only 10 there too and properly conditioned & served ales.
10 Jun 2007 16:39
The Station Arms, Southminster
What a great little pub this is! Went on holiday last week and visited the Station Arms on the first evening, needless to say the friendly reception from both landlord & locals, the superb ever changing range of tip-top quality beers ensured we came back every single night for the duration of our short break.
A proper pub indeed! With Crouch Vale Brewers Gold & Dark Star Hophead almost in permanent residence at the bar what excuse do you need to give this place a try? As Arnold said, "I shall be back!".
10 Jun 2007 16:34
A real gem, great selection of ales at reasonable prices for a city centre pub. The price of lunch? 1. Yes, large filled rolls of excellent quality for only 1. Can feel a bit morbid if you are the only one in their due to the dark wood finish etc but it's usually packed of an evening so no real need for Prozac. :)
1 Jun 2007 16:14
Nice pub, shame about the beer!
Far too many country pubs these day's get above themselves thinking they are something they most clearly are not i.e. A bistro. A dear bistro at that with expensive drinks too.
What about the word *PUB* don't these managers/landlords understand?
20 May 2007 11:54
As below, fake farmhouse "pub in a box" kit special that is very dull and very average in every way possible.
Much better *real* pubs in the area such as the Cross Hands in Alveston only 1/2 a mile away.
20 May 2007 11:40
Great community boozer that also welcomes strangers. Landlord John has been mine host for years and is everything a great host should be. Good selection of real ales with usually a Cottage brewery beer as guest + both Thatchers Traditonal & Cheddar Valley ciders on tap too.
The reasonably priced home cooked menu that John's wife produces is the best in the area and a seperate dining area from the main bar ensures that either does not impose on each other. Nice garden at the rear too to while away those summer day's. Best pub in the area by a long chalk and has been for many years but still a relative secret compared to some other brassier neigbhouring hostels. Give it a try!
20 May 2007 11:37
Good news DickStilton, the Bass is now back! Well it was on my recent visit anyway. As good as ever, don't think the menu has seen a price increase for a few years now which is great, best value range of ploughmans in the area by a mile. Not been in for ages, Geoff & Carol still licensees and everything remains the same as it ever was - superb.
15 May 2007 18:17
Yes, much better now the old misery guts has left! :-)
Only had a quick pint of 6X but the beer was spot on and service and atmosphere a vast improvement. At least there is now "1" decent pub in the area to visit ... at long last!
6 May 2007 18:37
I think so dagdog, was it just after the refurb when locals called it the "Dagmar" after the bar in EastEnders at the time? If not, it must have been a bit later and I'll get me coat. lol
8 Apr 2007 15:53
The Bowl Inn, Lower Almondsbury
Nice pub but boy do they know how to charge! Almost 3 for a pint of ale is called "mugging" someone. Little chance of getting a seat in the evenings either if you "only" want a drink as it's food, food, food. Shame, because it's not a bad pub apart from that.
2 Mar 2007 12:07
Yes iyers, has sadly gone right downhill since previous award winning team Paul & Dee left to takeover the Hare on the Hill.
Landlord is indeed an arrogant sort who certainly does not take the return of poorly kept ale very well from my experiences there. The once reasonably priced menu is now charging city centre prices for what is only after all pub grub with fancy names & twists. Paninis? Ciabattas? Come on they're just fancy rolls with a side order of chips so why charge such greedy amounts of money for them?
Such a shame considering how good it was for so many years. Gutted!
2 Mar 2007 12:02
Very expensive trendy type pub with lots of metal, metal and even more metal on view. My Brains SA Gold was superb I have to say despite it being chilled and being poured through a sparkler, you'd think an independant brewery like Brains would know better! 1.35 for a small coke is taking the wee-wee somewhat though.
Overall it's OKish though, well on a dinnertime anyway.
26 Feb 2007 16:34
Great little Hotwells Bath Ales boozer. Beer always top quality and good value pub grub too. Nice to see John Landsall as the permanent landlord these days too, great bloke who knows exactly how to run a friendly pub.
24 Feb 2007 16:58
Back to it's best after it's untimely clossure last year. Ross and Karen, though young, are clearly showing how a pub should be managed with a friendly welcome and goodbye for all, not just the regulars. Beer is top notch condition at all times and the food is nice good value pub grub. The previous regime was awful so it's nice to see such an institution being run so well. Keep up the good work!
24 Feb 2007 16:51
This is my new favorite hostel after my first ever visit. Landlord Roger Dors (A relative of the late famed actress Diana Dors no less) is a character and then some! He has been mine host for over 60 years now and his father was landlord before that. Set at a crossroads on a hill at the outskirts of Priddy this wonderful pub is a gem serving fine gravity ales from the likes of Blindman brewery, Butcombe and the like and the wonderful real cider of nearby neighbour Roger Wilkins.
ElBorracho's excellent review below is spot on and the kind of review I have been berated for on here in the past ... some don't seem to appreciate proper values these day's it seems, I guess cold Brit brewed lager and a night out with the kiddies is just their thing and not mine in a million years. This is no Beefeater with kids running around, they serve proper home cooked food from an excellent short menue and it is to die for! Try the faggotts & peas with crusty bread at a paltry 3.20 and you will be a fan for life I guarantee it. The friendly welcome I received from both host, staff and locals is one that still warms the heart even now and makes you realise how utterly useless and unfriendly the majority of pub landlords are these day's - I ask why they even bother as most don't even want to talk to their customers never mind befriend them. In my opinion this place is an institution and I can now understand why so many friends have told me to visit there whenever I had the chance. My only regret is that I took so long in making my first visit but now that I have I shall be back as quickly as I can find an excuse to travel back that way again.
Top notch 10/10!.
24 Feb 2007 16:39
The Check Inn, North Wroughton
Superb pub despite it's modern feel interior. Excellent range of well kept ales at realistic prices, also a great range of true continental lagers which are hard to come by. Staff are great & very welcoming too which is nice.
Food is excellent but sad to say well OTT price wise after a recent price increase. Their Brixham jumbo cod is awesome but at 10.50 they really are having a laugh. Such a shame considering their beer pricing policy that the food pricing policy goes totally the other way so I now only ever buy drink here and spend my 7 - 8 that I consider a reasonable ammount for a good pub meal elswhere.
12 Feb 2007 18:36
So pleased that you also enjoyed it TWG, but to be honest after reading & enjoying many of your reviews it does not surprise me in the least that you too loved it. Far from being a pontificator, you know a good pub when you see one.
I shall be back that way in june and I'm looking forward to even now, some of John's stories are both fascinating & hillarious. Anyone who visits, ask him why he has his "Cask Marque" award sign hanging upside down at the pub's entrance. I can vouch for the food TWG too, very good local produce at a fair price. Nothing fancy, wholesome pub food cooked properly as it should be.
As TWG rightly said, you will not want to leave!
8 Feb 2007 17:45
Yes anon, I now agree to exactly what you are saying - it really has gone downhill over the last year or so sadly. Reserved tables throughout the whole pub on a Friday evening = Go away drinkers we do not want you unless you are eating here! Stood up for over half an hour whilst I looked at two empty tables with reserved signs on them lay to waste. As you say, the beer quality was drab so I too switched to drinking Black Rat cider. Won't be getting my hard earned cash anytime soon that's for sure.
6 Feb 2007 15:41
The Anchor Inn, Oldbury on Severn
A classic in it's own right!
A bit too foody for my liking but that aside it's a great pub, beer is always excellent as is the food. Lovely gardens for summer drinking too. The only pub I know of in Gloucestershire that serves Theakstons Old Peculiar 365 days of the year too.
14 Nov 2006 11:57
The White Hart, Littleton on Severn
Was once a great pub back in the old Smiles days but now sadly a shadow of it's former glory since Youngs took it over a number of years ago and just yet another country restaraunt masqerading as a pub.
Usual, dull Youngs beers on tap and the odd guest beer. Don't think the place has been cleaned properly for years either, ingrained dirt & cobwebs almost everywhere you look.
Crying out for someone like Bath Ales or similar to takeover, one can only hope as this was once a glorious place.
14 Nov 2006 11:51
Relaxed, small pub outside the village of Berkley which has it's own brewery. Landlord/head brewer Steve brews a variety of beers with usually one of his own brews always on pump and the other 3 pumps consisting usually of local guest beers. Two excellect ciders from ever superb cider makers Gwatkin also on sale. Usually one hot dish on menu at dinnertimes, no food in evenings but filled rolls available at all times.
11 Nov 2006 14:25
Paid a recent visit to see if things had changed for the better re: Pricing structure. But alas no!
2.90 a pint for any beer over the strength 4.2 (2.75 for the weaker ones too!) is a right liberty! (No matter how nice the pub is or well the beer kept btw!)
How is it the weekend before my visit I am drinking in Parsons Green, London and paying 2.40 a pint in a very expensive London area yet have to pay 50p a pint more in my home town of Bristol? The pricing at the Port is BANG out of order and the sooner the Bristol CAMRA branch acknowledge this the better, I mean how expensive does a pint of beer have to be before it is excluded from The Good Beer guide on principle alone? Such a shame as it's such a nice pub.
29 Oct 2006 14:39
Superb community boozer!
Great staff, great beer & great, well priced food that doesn't get in the way of the drinking atmosphere.
Excellent (Free!) music on a Sunday evening too. Only downside is parking, arrrgghhhh!
15 Oct 2006 12:41
No lager? {snigger} - Nigel & Caroline would laugh at that one I'm sure.
If the only downside is no lager then that is a pub indeed. Draught Brit brewed lager masquerading as an Aussie/French/German brew is not something you will have *ever* found at the Bridge and praise be for that! :-)
15 Oct 2006 12:33
Great pub, well kep ales and excellent food to boot.
Very friendly & welcoming staff and only 2 miles from the Swan @ Little Totham too which should not be missed.
15 Oct 2006 12:22
CAMRA pub of Britain twice = Cannot go wrong!
My wife usually hates most pubs but loved it here, stayed in Essex for a week but despite the 30 mile round trip we ended up here most days. Why? Firstly the landlord John is a host of the very highest order and *all* of his staff are just as good, knowledgeable and welcoming so straight away you really want to be here. Secondly the pub itself & location are wonderful, low ceilings & large open fire. Thirdly but certainly not last on this list is the excellent collection of gravity served cask ales all in supreme condition. I tried Brewers Gold in many a pub that week but none made my eyes light up like that served here, it was awesome and the glass shone like a glass of great ale should!
John told me he is in the process of handing the pub over to his son after many years service but fear not because he is leaving this fantastic pub in safe hands. My only regret? I just wish with all my heart that the Swan was my local instead of all the dross around my area instead of it being a 400+ mile round trip. Go here when you can, you will *not* regret it but savour your memories for a long time after I assure you!
15 Oct 2006 12:19
Great pub, great beer, great food, great landlord.
So what possibly can be wrong then?
The price of beer! Way too expensive, nearly 3 a pint is taking the wee wee I'm afraid so stopped going there despite it being one of the best pubs in Bristol. Rip-Off Britain is bad enough as it is without beer prices on this scale, no matter how good the beer is!
12 Sep 2006 12:35
My second home of late (don't tell the wife mind!). Just like stepping back in time to an age where life was a lot simpler and stress had not even been invented yet. Can be difficult to find if you don't know the lanes but just ask anyone in the area where "West End" is rather than head into Nailsea itself.
Small room on left and small room & bar on right as you enter the pub. Charming barmaid who is a credit to the trade, friendly with everyone and not just the locals. Large garden at rear and seats outside front where you can while away the hours with a few pints and simply let all your pressures disolve into the ether.
Good range of gravity served ales usually inc London Pride, Butcombe, an RCH brew and regular guest ales (Taylor Landlord of late too!) also Sandford's finest Thatchers Traditional cider too. Wish I was there right now!
5 Sep 2006 20:19
Nice building - Useless pub or rather restaraunt.
Poor selection of ale (2 when I was there - 6X & IPA - how utterly imaginative!) and extortionate prices. Landlord is not exactly welcoming, in fact he's a misery and can barely be bothered to serve people from my watchings there.
Which is strange, because at their prices I would be sprinting behind the bar ala Linford Christie with a goofy grin on my face knowing my bank manager would be very happy with me.
Avoid!
20 Jun 2006 23:00
Dickens lives!
I think this is the place Charlie boy had in mind for a setting involving Bill Sykes, rough pub, rough crowd and awful quality beer - if you could call it that.
The regulars all have tatoos too, even some of the men! :-)
20 Jun 2006 22:53
New Inn, Mayshill, Frampton Cotterell
OK it's a bit more of a restraunt than a pub, sadly. Now that's the bad news over with. (Food looked great btw)
Good range of "well kept" local brews, relaxing and well upholstered drinking area which is seperate to the dining area and a very nicely mixed clientele creating a warm and hospitable atmosphere. Nice garden too! Shame the car park looks like Steptoe's back yard at Oil Drum Lane with all the old clapped out cars there but there we are.
Relaxing pub, even my wife loved it and she hates pubs full stop usually.
20 Jun 2006 22:50
Great building - Sadly a great building does *not* a good pub maketh!
I keep giving this place a chance but last week was the last chance, Uley "Pig's Ear" was rank and localish Uley brewery owner Chas would faint knowing a pub could be serving his prestine brew so badly. Whilst there I saw two other people return pints of Sharp's Special too, could not see through the glass it was so bad.
Expensive too- 2.40 for a pint of Black Rat cider when the local going rate averages aprox 1.80. Ouch!
Never again! Sadly not fit enough to tie the shoelaces of now sadly closed "Rose & Crown" in same village. Also full of Yate young kiddie "chavs" on the Friday night in question. Urrrrrgggghhhhhhh.
20 Jun 2006 22:44
Newly renovated with a light airy feel to the place that is very relaxing indeed. Sampled the Bath Ales "Wild Hare" and condition of the beer was supreme, had a fantastic lunch and came out with a smile on my face.
Oh yes, and the barmaid was excellent - friendly, helpful and enjoying her work. Sadly all too rare these day's.
Faultless - And I'm very hard to please. ;)
20 Jun 2006 22:38
An oasis in the desert!
In my opinion one of the finest pubs in the UK, beer range is always eclectic and superbly kept. Landlord Steve knows exactly what he is doing by simply getting the basics right all the time which encourages a very mixed age group and therefore a great atmosphere.
It is a sheer joy to simply walk through the door of this establishment wondering what goodies are on offer that day and knowing 101% that whatever the beer concerned that it will be in perfect condition every single time. 11/10 if only I could award it.
18 Jun 2006 15:37
A great little haven and a reminder of what a good pub should be like. Great food & beer always in superb condition, great outside areas where you can look across to Dundry and chill out on a warm day. A few pints of Thatchers and you are in heaven!
30 May 2006 21:14
The best pub in England! I have been visiting The Bridge for over 20 years now and apart from the odd lick of paint and an official vist from Her Majesty it has not changed one bit and long may it stay that way too! No mobile phones, no nasty draught lagers and only well prepared fresh local food and the finest of gravity served ales.
Trust me - it does NOT get any better than this anywhere! If you don't love The Bridge after visiting then you haven't got a pulse.
24 Apr 2006 18:41
As said, ruined! Used to be a great pub with many characters now just a sad, ikea wine bar with very steep prices and full of twonks!
9 Oct 2005 12:48
Great pub with very friendly & quirky locals and in these days pretty much a rarity - A landlord with a personality!
Beer range is mainly the Doghouse range + a special brew called Zelah Mist brewed for by the pub by Skinners.
Menu is extensive and the food superb. Not to be missed and expect a very warm welcome too.
21 Sep 2005 09:49
Great Hopback pub, watch you dont drink too much Summer Lightning though!
19 Sep 2005 14:19
Superb pub!
Does not matter whether you are young or old because if you enjoy well kept beers and great atmosphere then you are in for a treat, lunchtime food is also very good. Live blues (free entry) on a Sunday evening. A big shame that Bath Ales in their wisdom (!?!) to move the succesful licensees to another of their pubs though a month or so ago so just hope the very high standards remain the same.
19 Sep 2005 14:05
The Rose and Crown, Iron Acton
Was a great pub now sadly closed for good as of 11/04.
19 Sep 2005 14:00
The Black Horse, Clapton in Gordano
Cracking country inn that does everything right!
A fair range (a bit dull though) of real ales all served from the cask inc Courage Best, Butcombe & Spitfire. Thatchers real cider also sold.
Food served at dinnertimes only and very good it is too. Can get quite packed of an evening so get there early and join in the fun!
19 Sep 2005 13:59
Sadly this is now more of a carvery than a pub these days and much of the original interior caracter has sadly long since gone. Beer is usually fairly well kept but the trouble is if you are coming here just to drink you will feel like a fish out of water with virtually all tables set aside/booked for dining.
Food not too great either (much better off eating at the Fox - Old Down 1/2 a mile away). All in all a great looking country inn that really has lost it's way over the last few years which is very sad.
19 Sep 2005 13:48
Great low celling country pub that's hard to find unless you are local so just ask. Well kept but rather boring range of real ales usually including Bass, Moles Best, Doom Bar, IPA. Moles Black Rat real cider also on tap.
Great food at a fair price and a nice sized garden at the rear. Overall you can't go wrong but such a shame about the beer range when you could be drinking something that would make your eyes light up instead!
19 Sep 2005 13:43
The Orchard Inn, Bristol
@mark555
End of the day Mark this does happen in all pubs, unless it is tasted each day by staff. It's happened to me a couple of times but don't just drink it, take it back and politely tell them it's turned. They will be more than happy to change it for another cider and take the bad one off.
Done this several times myself here and never, ever had a problem .... funnily enough it usually seems to be Rich's Dry which is my usual favourite but I do notice when I buy it myself direct from Rich's, Ben Crossman, Roger Wilkins it never seems to keep as long as Thatchers so just one of those things with cider unfortunately. Hey-Ho. :-)
