A perfectly good boozer with a not-too-exciting atmosphere, fit for the over 50s but not exclusviely so. Only one good ale on the night I was there, Doombar - was in good shape. So while one good beer does not make a real ale pub I was pleased that BeerinTheEvening steered me in the right direction for animate chat with old mates with proper beer.

But did you know that the name is an anagram of One Bad Goth Den, now thats a bit unfair I know. .....

The Metal Bridge Inn, Blackford
From memory, the mix of guinness and pickled eggs was very welcome.

Another change of management, if its known to one or two locals as the Dreadfern, thats a shame.

I used to like this pub when it was known as the Board, at that time swearing in moderation was allowed (see next comment from anon) and the barstools would then be used as missiles occasionally. Getting old is of course not avoidable. Social exclusion of foul mouthed oiks is not universal just yet, thankfully, after all they (we?!) probaly provide a lot of the services you use. PS its a pub.

November 2007 this pub was closed for business, the local MP was keen to get it re-opened in part as a working museum to the State Management Scheme (see wikipedia).

The Bank of Friendship, Highbury
This find boozer has lost some of its charm recently following the 2007 change of management. The friendly service which was a mark of its former charm has gone.

The Sir Alexander Fleming, Paddington
Normally, a useless bar, with disinteresed useless staff

The Fettler and Firkin, Paddington
Frequently serving undrinkable bitter, served by staff with no interest or clue on how to serve beer, no sign the owner gives a Sh++
Deservedly mostly half empty - a waste of a good site crying out to be run by a professional

Just as good as ever, and new management have avoided unnecessesary renovation, brewery geting a bit greedy but lets hope they let this bit of real pub gets left alone a lot longer.

Formerly a fabbie free rock/blues/punk/most stuff venue shoulder to shoulder, free entry late bar, real ale.
Sadly that was in the past, now it is a shell of its former self, with no ale no bands.

Strange reliance on low waged staff given its pretence at 'britness' with handlebar club (men with proposterous whiskas) and Charles & Di memorobilia.
Nice to be a republican and a boozer like this.

Cheap lager in a soulless cellar. Yankee trogladites may enjoy this, but not me.

The Mad Bishop and Bear, Paddington
Real ale selection is OK but staff are only passing through, beer not in particularly good condition, and atmosphere is certainly not a pub but a tarted up waiting room.
Try Sussex or for a real treat - the Mitre

A refuge from the naf corporate pubs in the station.
Youngs beer OK and a good mix of clientelle - not too shouty
15 Nov 2005 20:29
This is the place to meet the overbeered lager brigade - ere we go. not for me but if you want to shout at the goalie in unison and spill out into the street looking cloned and bleery beery.
Old cogers should wear earplugs

Still a good boozer this side of the tracks, nice beer and not too crowded / noisy mostly
15 Nov 2005 20:09
Thinks its classy - it is in fact pricey and the seating is half way between tea room and boozer - not good for either. Beer there can be good which is its salvation, but try the Tap & Spile too
9 Oct 2005 12:29
One of the worse Weatherspoons - seating not available at the times I go out - if they were open till 1am I would go, but they aren't. Usual closing time indignity applies, spray bottles in yer face.

Can be ok, can be loud or mildly rowdy. It has a nice layout and you can get a reasonable ale there.
Like all of UK - if major sports on TV it may be OTT
9 Oct 2005 12:13
Clearly you either like the mix or hate it - if you like it you like shouting, stick floors, crowded lavvies, tv in your face, get pissed quick deals and empty wallet syndrome, then its for you. I just don't get the bit where THEY look you over to see if you are suitable to enter!
So I go when desparate, and only when out after hours with clutch of grumpy or destitute ol codgers.
I'm Donald Trump and you score zero.

Fails to live up to the promise that the exterior suggests - at best its a hybrid of a bar and a classy boozer - so laminate floor, mostly lager and a bit of real ale. Muzic dominates the ambience. Better nip over to the Jolly Brewer eh?

If you like dark drab (the Victorian colour) and lots of Victorian pub feeling - then this is a gem.
Cask Beer was good if not exquisite, and I had a nice first visit.
Non smoking seating is hard chairs in dinign area.
All over its good and lets hope it stays as it is.

Trad with good reviews brings the problem of an enthousiast's hot spot with more spread than lean among the clientelle, and an unnatural preponderence of visitors and beeries.
All pubs should manage to keep two ales in good condition, here they do rather better.
Chat is skewed toward beer topics which makes it no substitute for a luvvie pub.
Easy and smokey, beerie and drab, I am one of the displaced from the closeby Rosemary Branch, which has had a daft change around and naff seating.

Nice atmosphere and a friendly crowd, with live music some friday evenings.

The Vine Inn, Lincoln
This pub is now reinvented as a minor real ale destination a free house after extensive refurbishment.
