Popped in of an afternoon so can't speak for evenings, pub was empty but ale was fine.

Now a Wetherspoons caled The Boot. Excellent and cheap ales, about 8.
There are 2 Wetherspoons in Burnley, this being the quieter and better one for me, the other is more of a town centre music bar.

A great traditional pub, 2 ales both excellent, well worth a visit.

I've previously visited the Barearts gallery/beer shop on a trip which can be organised for a party of 12 or more which was an excellent experience, very good food is served; ciabatta, cheese, sausage and a menu of 6 different ales presented and explained by the owner.
This recent visit however was on a Saturday afternoon which maybe was why the atmosphere wasn't as good as I remember, the staff are very friendly and the bottle conditioned ale is very good. My wife has an issue with the one joint toilet, not ideal for ladies.
The group experience I would definately do again and give 8 maybe 9 out of 10 and possibly try an evening visit.

Ale was fine but for a Saturday afternoon the annoying dance type music made this a short visit. Would possibly re-visit depending on the music.

Called in to escape the cold on our walk back to town on Saturday afternoon about 5pm. The loud dance music forced us to drink a quick half outside in the cold so it's difficult to rate the ale but personally wouldn't recommend this pub.

This pub is more of an eatery than an ale house. The decor is new and very nice.
It's a Free House with 4 real ales which were drinkable but far from perfect.
The food wasn't brilliant either, an allegedly spicy bean burger which wasn't spicy at all with under-cooked chips, my lasagne was excellent but the garlic bread was hardly toasted and the tomato with the side salad was green. Doesn't seem worth it when there's a Wetherspoons a few minutes walk away.
A little more attention to detail would make this a good pub.

We called in on our walk back to town from the Masons Arms on Saturday afternoon and ended up staying for a couple of hours.
The pub itself is recently re-furbished and very nice, the bar part of the pub is still traditional whilst the other room is very modern with comfy sofas.
The locals were very friendly and entertaining particularly the on-going argument over which parts of the pub are Lancashire and which are Yorkshire.
The landlord was also a very nice chap who keeps 3 ales extremely well, JW Lees, Leeds pale and Hydes.
The Woodpecker is definately on our list of locals especially as it's only 3 quid return on the bus from Burnley.

Me and my wife called on a Saturday afternoon which was quite busy, the pub itself is recently refurbished and very nice and cosy with 2 coal fires going, as already mentioned it is dog friendly but the other room is presumably not for dogs but for people who may not be dog friendly.
We tried all 5 ales which were all very well kept and all from local breweries.
Definately worth the just under a mile walk from town and a better walk along the canal towpath.

Under new ownership who seem to be doing good food, was very busy on a Sunday afternoon.
Ale was wonderful, tried a Thwaites Wainright, a Bombardier, a Copper Dragon and a Moorhouses Pride of Pendle, all were excellent.

A wonderful old style country pub, good ale, friendly staff, open fires.
Excellent walking in the area too.

Contrary to my last post, which was honest about my visit on that occasion, I have been twice since, the first being a wedding where lots of ale was drunk, the IPA was very good as well as a couple of others which were just fine, chap behind the bar who served me was knowledgeable. Not the cheapest drinking in town but it is a town center pub and a nice old building at that.

The building is amazing, like a 50s hotel but in very good condition.
Went in a couple of times this weekend, beer fine, Theakstons and Copper Dragon, it seemed to cost more on the Monday as it had a couple of days before so that's not ideal.

Nice local pub, always has 2 well kept ales which change, last visit was Green King's IPA and Wychwood's Hobgoglin, both of which are kept perfectly.

Been closed down for over a year, being made into a car parts shop.

The Roggerham Gate Inn, Briercliffe
Called in for a quick beer in the middle of a walk on a Saturday afternoon.
The beer was excellent, a Some Like it Blonde and particularly the Moorhouses Roggerham which is brewed specially for them.
food is very reasonably priced, will try that on the next visit.

This pub has had a chequered history of late but the current temporary landlord, tipped to take the place on keeps excellent ale. They had an ale festival recently with over 10 ales at once all of which were excellent. The table full of Camra guys ended up singing so the ale must have been ok.

Very dissapointing, from the outside it looks like a traditional pub but inside has been re-furbished all trendy, had a good pint of guiness but that's only because there was no ale, hence the nil points.
Lots of youngsters, this was a Saturday afternoon.

Fine ale, can't speak for the food as I've lost interest since they stopped doing proper home-made bar snacks, it's gone a bit posher, the actual bar is still traditional and there's an evening mid-week when the ale is cheaper.
16 Jun 2011 13:29
My wife and I went in, sampled every ale which were all excellent and ate some very reasonably priced good food, service was fine too.
Will definately visit often.

Micro-brewery on site, excellent beers great little pub.
16 Jun 2011 13:21
Unfortunately large pub, coach-house style which makes it seem on the empty side, never had a bad ale there. Worth a visit.
16 Jun 2011 13:20
tried 2 ales, both barely drinkeable, food is the over-priced pub chain type stuff. Not worth a visit in my opinion.
16 Jun 2011 13:18
A constantly changing selection of locally brewed and excellently served ales, if you drink enough you even get a certificate, or is that certificated.
What the DJ on Saturday nights doesn't know about music isn't worth knowing.
Quite a few descent single malts too.
Well worth a visit.
16 Jun 2011 13:11
Probably the finest collection of beers, ales in the area, excellent ale, never had a bad one. Obviously busy on match days.
Proper bar staff.
16 Jun 2011 13:08
The Craven Heifer Inn, Rawtenstall
The landlord is a proper barman who keeps 5 pumps of perfectly served Moorhouses and a very clean and organised bar. A fine selection of single malts too.
16 Jun 2011 13:04
The Ashworth Arms, Rawtenstall
Needs a good clean, beer not remarkable, I see no reason to back there unless major cleaning and beer keeping is improved, especially as there are excellent ale pubs within walking distance either side of it.
16 Jun 2011 13:01
The Masons Arms, Todmorden
Our second visit, afternoon again, this time we ate and the food was excellent, all of the salads are locally grown and home-made pie was amazing.
The ale was perfect.
