I really like this pub but it does get daft busy in the summer. Visited yesterday - lovely food, nice waitresses, real fire, a gale outside & sweet sweet mulled wine. Must be one of London's best. Let's hope it doesn't change.

The Melton hosted the final of the Sainsbury's Beer Competition last week. The beers all had to be produced specially for the competition (I believe) and the winner, Dr Okells IPA, from Okell's Brewery in the Isle of Man is our current guest ale. Not sure how much of this you'll find on handpull around town so it's worth popping in for a pint while it's available.

The Melton Mowbray has currently got Fullers Vintage Ale (2008 vintage) on cask. It's limited edition beer as it's usually only bottle-conditioned and is pretty special. 8.5% ABV and 3.75 a pint so it's expensive but a real rare treat. Get down and try some.

This week coming (22nd-26th Oct) The Melton Mowbray is having a mini cask ale festival starting with Fullers London Porter, Mr Harry and Vintage Ale (8.5% - normally only for the export market) and Castle Rock Nottingham Gold. Later in the week, therell be Tom Woods Hop & Glory and Wychwood Hobgoblin as well as the usual complete Fullers range.
The Cellar Bar is open every evening for this week, as two of the much needed handpumps are down there, and provides more of an ale supping sanctuary away from the hubbub of the City
I got the name from a hairdryer...

This must be Islington's best kept secret. The Crown is my favourite lunchtime haunt - 5 minute walk from the office on Upper Street, the place virtually to yourself, real fire, fantastic ales (best Pride in north London) and amazing food. It's a little pricey as it's a 'gastro' but all the food is homemade - if you get there early enough it smells like a bakery as they do their own bread of a morning. Lush.

The Junction Tavern, Kentish Town
I really like this pub/tardis. Great food and great ales. Why do so many ale drinkers on this site disparage great gastropubs? Don't they realise how much good this type of pub has done for the ale industry, promoting British produce, local sourcing and traditional food & drink. Or is it a case of snobbery?
