Windmill Inn, Weald

Police attend pub after poppies row
Associated Press:31st Oct 2009
"A row has erupted in a village over claims a pub landlady refused to sell poppies from a tray on her bar ahead of Remembrance Day. A staff member at The Windmill in the Weald, near Sevenoaks, Kent claimed the pub had received "threatening" phone calls in the wake of the saga and alerted police. Weald parish councillor David Marchant, who went into the pub to hand out the poppy tray while delivering them round the village, told the Sevenoaks Chronicle: "I went into The Windmill and the lady was not at all keen to have them. A lot of the village are upset." Publican and mother-of-two Bernice Walsh gave a different version of events and told the newspaper: "Well, I said they could put the poppies on the bar, and then he took them away."
A Kent Police spokeswoman said: "Officers attended today following a call from a member of the public at the premises reporting nuisance phone calls." Both Mr Marchant and Ms Walsh declined to comment. In a separate incident earlier this week, a Royal British Legion poster in Gillingham, Kent, urging the public to support this year's Poppy Appeal was defaced to attack former prime minister Tony Blair. "

I understand that this Publican comes from Mayo on the West Coast of the Irish Republic. A country that stood back and did nothing between 1939-1945 to stop the many evils of Hitler and his vile allies. A country that saw nothing wrong when Hitler committed suicide, in seeing it's President trot around to the German Embassy to sign the book of condolence. A people that backed murdering terrorists on streets of Britain's cities killing ordinary men, women, childen and British peace keeping soldiers. I would suggest that the good people of Kent respond in that time honoured and democratic way to such an insult by Boycotting this pub and it's brewery. And for that matter, any other pub or bar in Britain that has such like Publicans and staff who wish to insult the brave of this country's past and present fighting forces.

The Britannia, Borough

How very sad to hear that Punch have sold for 400,000 the freehold of this lovely Britannia pub in Kipling Street at The Borough.
The new developer owner plans to redevelop the pub creating. "residential and investment opportunities". Like we really need more flats here?
The Britannia is a charming old, renovated hidden pub gem in dear old South London; just behind Mr Guy's wonderful hospital, that still feels like a proper London pub. Very good service, friendly, welcoming staff. and excellent ales. However, most of all over 100 whiskies are on offer too. Yet for how long now?

Another knock out blow to the British pub culture and loss to the Borough/Bermondsey history scene. Rush on down there and enjoy it as whilst you still can. And spit another curse towards Punch and it's soon forth coming financial collapse for doing so.

The Windmill Tavern, Waterloo

Close old chap;nextdoor in fact. It's now the wonderful Chinese resturant and well worth using;clean, very good food, cheap and lovely girl waitressess. And a very better bet for eating than the in-house Thai food at the Windmill it self; twice I've tried it and sat counting the sparingly offerings upon my plate. Certainly a skinny Budda bar catering manager.
No sir, enjoy the Windmill by all means; very good atmosphere, friendly staff, excellent sport tv screen coverage and well maintained beer, but slip next door for your food. And return later to enjoy the drink again.

The White Hart, Kennington

Good for food, watching television on the big screen, comfortable chairs and Lager. Only problem is the Bitter! Badly served and poorly kept; best pop around, as has been said before, to the Prince of Wales around the corner.

Well served Ale in clean glasses in a sunny well run English pub. Happiness!

The Hand In Hand, Wimbledon Common

Another country seat of pleasurable pub drinking so close to central London and a few doors away from the Crooked Billet. A treat well worth travelling to in all seasons.

The Golden Eagle, Bond Street

A treasure of a beer house! Clean, friendly, quiet and set on a sunny corner. A true find, so close between Marylebone High Street and Oxford Street. Whisper it not to the massess men. Far too good a pub to share with the common herd.

The Toucan, Soho

They sell overpriced Guinness in plastic! Charmless, dark excuse of a bar, not worth a first, let alone second glance;walk on by. Jollier and more friendly bars with interesting people nearby.

The Dover Castle, Marylebone

Chaps & Chapessess! This place is wonderful and a real find, hidden a short trot between Great Portland Street/Oxford Circus/Marylebone High Street. Whisper it amongst we drinkers true; far too good to ruin by allowing the massess in. Enjoy!

The Jerusalem Tavern, Clerkenwell

Plastic glasses;enough said. They don't need my hard earned either.

The Speaker, Westminster

Wonderful bar for the lone drinker to sit, listen or read and enjoy a pint or two. Must agree;it's one of the best pubs in London

The Jolly Gardeners, Vauxhall

No wre800, that isn't London, it's the Lambeth Walk. And despite the various German beers and food, all very expensive for what they are, this is a charmless pub in a charmless area, run by a charmless people, who have problems serving people.

The Ram, Kingston Upon Thames

I found myself visiting Kingston on Thursday and thought that I'd try The Ram seeing that the Griffin has now gone further along the road! It's a Spirit group pub of some possibly history considering its position close to the centre of Kingston and the Thames. On offer were a good selection of Ales; Doombar, Youngs, Green King IPA, London Pride, Nethergate and Bath Hare. I tried a pint each of the latter two. It should have been okay, but for the taste of dirty pipes. Pressing a button, doesn't clean the pipes and ensure good tasting beer. You have to attend to the main job in hand in a Pub and clean and pull through the pipes properly. Is the area Manager from Spirit a beer drinker? Silly question? I don't know in this day and age.
The pub it self was clean within reason; however the tiled area in front of the bar looked as though it hasn't been mopped recently. The toilets were clean, but here was another pub with no hot water to wash your hands. Soap alone doesn't clean germs, you need hot water too. The pub is a dark and dreary place, but it does have an area that streatches down to the River. However, this too is charmless considering it's positioning near the Thames. Can't Spirit group landscape the area? You have a brand new, world class theatre, The Rose, just along the way; why not spend a bit of money making this place pleasant. The drinkers of Kingston upon Thames deserve better. I certainly will look for a better pub on my next visit to the town.
