My there's been some nonsense posted recently about this pub. I've been drinking (and since the revamp eating) here for many years and I can say it consistently delivers.
My view of recent posters complaints:
Overpriced drinks - all the pubs round here are expensive, the Regent compares well. if you drink Premium beers or wines, its going to cost.
Overpriced food - 10 for 2 courses on a Monday - pared down menu but it includes steak, burger etc.
Overlong menu - my criticism is that they don't change the menu enough.
Food quality - nothing on the menu is advertised as organic, free range etc. If you want to know which farm your beef came from either buy it yourself or eat a top restaurant, this is a pub. The chefs are good, but it does get very busy at times - would you complain if Ramsay swore at you?
Service charge - is discretional but as this includes all drinks and food brought to your table - it can get very busy at the bar, what's 10%?
I could go on but why bother. The Regent is a great neighbourhood pub (there's lots of us regulars) in a nice location, with decent beer and it does food. Judge it on more that 1 visit, you may revise your opinion.

In light of my previous comments re The Florence and its policy of only selling premium brands at premium prices and 5% alcohol content, I was always cheered when visiting this pub as it had Carling on draft. Alas no more, on Saturday I was informed that they didn't do Carling (or Stella) anymore as it didn't fit with their customer profile!! However Becks Vier was available (only 4%) at a 20p hike from Carling. What is going on in Herne Hill? Judging by the emptyness of the Commercial, clearly lots of people don't fit their customer profile. You cannot get a pint of ordinary cider (Strongbow etc) for love nor money (admittedly I haven't visited the Half Moon), it's all Magners etc. The Commercial is still a decent pub but surely there is sufficient demand for pubs to be different?

As a Regent regular and customer of the old Ganleys I was eager to see what had been done. Its much smarter inside now with an extended outside area which will appeal to people with kids as its secure and away from the road. The new menu reads well and is competitively priced. The lagers (ok its early days) seem to be all premium and 5% or over which may limit it appeal as I would prefer something lower (you cant drink many pints @ 5%). Wine - red, white and rose is on tap (not quite like the old Stowells range but still a bit offputting, although I haven't tried it). The biggest minus for me though is that all the screens have gone meaning that there is nowhere left in Herne Hill to watch football. Note its all non-smoking, hurrah. Finally the staff seem helpful and friendly, not sure about getting the change on a silver tray though!

The Prince Regent, Herne Hill
Sorry Fred, the Lord Regent moniker is just because I'm a long standing regular. I find it hard to believe however that all 12 of you had a rubbish meal. It's constantly fully booked, so why would people keep eating there if it wasn't good?
Lots of kids is annoying though.
