The County and Station, Matlock
I don't see why this pub is listed with all the other pubs in Bath, Somerset, when it is miles away in Derbyshire.

I was a regular user of this pub until it became a bit shabby and run down. (See my previous review dated August 2008)
Haven't bothered with it again until this week, and was pleasantly surprised. It's been tidied up considerably and the decor has improved.
The beer was good, as always, and very reasonably priced for the centre of Bath. A bowl of pork crackling for 1.50 was well worth it.

This pub closed two or three weeks ago - a notice at the front informs that they have ceased trading. However, I saw workmen entering one morning last week, so it may re-open after refurbishment.

I have used this pub on a few occasions - nice and clean - good beer, BUT recently my wife arranged to meet our son and go there for a drink. The one barman was on the phone when they arrived. My wife took a seat and our son stood at the bar waiting to be served - and waited, and waited. The barman did not acknowledge him at all, not a "Sorry to keep you". or "Be right with you". He just carried on talking and pacing up and down whilst our son waited at the bar. After a few minutes they got fed up with it and walked out. So that is three customers who won't be returning.

This is an excellent and very well run pub. The smoking ban has assisted in making it a pleasant place to drink, and it has been tidied up considerably since it was Hatchetts. The only bad point about it has been the horrible toilets (male - I don't know about the female) but the male toilets are in the middle of a very nice refurbishment which will leave nothing to criticise. On my last visit on a cold day the pub was pleasantly warm with a good selection of beers - I had Journey's End from the Downton Brewery in Salisbury - very good. And the big bonus for this pub is that dogs are not permitted inside - quite rightly where food and drink is being served.

The comment from Hodge1 dated 16 Sep 2008 is misleading as he is obviously referring to the nearby Raven and not the Salamander.

I used this pub at least once a week for ages, but stopped after a couple of poor bar meals and because they seemed to be reluctant to put the heating on when it was cold. I got used to drinking elsewhere, but returned to give it another try recently. Good points are the excellent beer and the very reasonable prices. Unfortunately it has become a bit shabby inside and could do with smartening up. Of the six lamps above the bar two were not working. The white ceiling is stained yellow and needs repainting. There is a blackboard hanging inside the front window, and an advertising banner hanging outside the window, and the consequent loss of light makes the inside look gloomy.
I believe there has been a change of manager since I had my poor bar meals, so the food may have improved. If you're not bothered about the rather shabby surroundings but just want some good beer then this is recommended.
