The Old Hall Inn, Hope

What a difference a year makes. I was passing last weekend. A real landlord who means business and there are expansion plans afoot. Friendly, very hard working staff (the bartenders words) and spotlessley clean. The Pub food is excellent thanks to a hard working french chef and their seems to be a few locals creeping back into a new snug area. A real pleasure to see such a turnaround.

The Castle Hotel, Hope Valley

Typical chain pub in a guaranteed busy location. "Not particularly interested, just hand over your money and bugger off". High staff turnover and shortages because of (apparently) poor management. The food is camouflaged "Pub plastic", microwavable and overpriced.
Castleton is a "honeytrap" village in the Peak district and usually full of tourists who will eat and drink anything to keep the kids quiet. Complacency rules in this particular pub. Plenty of chips and fizzy pop if you can find a bartender.

What a change
A Year ago this pub was well run with plenty of friendly staff, clean rooms and landlady /chef who dished up good home made food. The landlord was a lazy but friendly scot. Now there are managers - Absolutely no interest in the pub itself. The staff have long-gone, dirty tables - waiting times for verrrry average food - No locals (I'm told this is a bad sign in the Hope Valley). To Bad

The Cheshire Cheese Inn, Hope

I heard that the previous landlord retired and sold his pub to one of the "plastic pub companies" thereby changing the pub from old fashioned family run to managers.
You can tell the rough date by the the change of reviews.

In the evening theres an older gentlemen who sits in his own chair at the end of the bar who will gladly talk to you and can translate phrases like "excuse me I'd like to get to the bar" for the lound mouthed geriatric clique who inhabit the very small and lovely old bar.

The food is notable for absolutly nothing.

I still like the place though, It's not the pubs fault !
