In response to "chubtank"s comments above. Firstly, he WAS served alcohol for HIS consumption, once it became apparent from the celebrations that he was celebrating his 18th, (albeit that he could produce no identification!!). As licensee I gave him the benefit-of-the-doubt.
The "stollen" pint in question was in fact purchased under false pretences, and it was then supplied (out of view of the bar!!! deceitfully?) to a young lady who had already conceded, to my staff that she was younger than the birthday boy, at a tender 17 years old!! No doubt in his youthful innocence he was unaware that he had indeed broken the law and had caused my staff to break the law without their knowledge. I plead guilty to "stealing" the pint whilst I personally collected glasses from the separate room where the music was being performed.
Please note chubtank, that Kingston-upon-Thames's licensing office directs ALL license holders that if a customer attempting to purchase alcohol appears to be under 21, we MUST ask for proof of ID to assert that the customer is over 18! Hopefully this clarifies the situation.
May I suggest that anybody fortunate enough to appear to be under 18yrs old, in this day & age should carry ID if you expect to be served the "Demon Drink".
On a positive note, I'm delighted chubtank enjoyed our twice monthly (2nd & last Friday of the month) Open Mic Night and hope in the years to come, when he is a little older and a little wiser, he shall give this pub another go. If he still looks under 21 HE WILL BE ASKED FOR IDENTIFICATION!!
