The Great Northern Railway Tavern, Hornsey

I have to agree with the previous couple of posters. The new owners have done a fantastic job restoring this beautiful pub, and the service is good, but the pub is really let down by the choice of beer on offer; neither Pride nor Greene King IPA are especially exciting offerings, and they don't stock a wheat beer, which seems a bit of an oversight.

This is a far nicer building than the Compasses, and yet we always end up across the street on account of the real ales on offer. We've popped our heads in a couple of times since our first visit, but sacked it off when we've seen the (lack of) ales on offer. Shame.

The Queens Head, St Pancras

Friendly staff, a good selection of beers and ciders at decent prices, and even though its not the biggest pub in the world, I always seem to get a table. Much less intense/busy than most pubs in the area, and a top spot for a midweek drink. Cracking Pork pies too.

The Southampton Arms, Gospel Oak

We were wandering past yesterday, and decided to pop in for a quick pint. Had several one-for-the-roads, and eventually left five hours later; its that sort of place. Pretty much my idea of a perfect pub; friendly and welcoming bar staff who were happy to let us sample the excellent beers (and even the wine), busy but not rammed, Neil Young on the record player, and possibly the finest Scotch egg that Ive ever eaten. We liked it a lot.

Lowlander, Covent Garden

We were in the Lowlander the other night, and I remembered why I hadnt gone back after my first visit; its ridiculously expensive. It worked out at something like 5.40 for a pint of average wheat beer, which is just criminal. Im happy/stupid enough to pay 4 4.50 for a pint, elsewhere, but 5.40 is just taking a liberty. And once you add on the 12.5% service charge for the waitress to fetch the beer from all of two feet away, youre looking at 6 for a pint of Grolsch Wiezen. If you try and order your own drinks, youre ignored until the point that you give up, and rely on the waitress service. Its a nice-enough place to have a beer, but its not 6-a-pint nice.

The Wellington Inn, Hull

We visited this pub before and after our recent game at Hull. A straightforward ten minute walk from the station, its easy to find and worth seeking-out.

Very friendly staff and punters, a great selection of beers, and whilst theres no food served by the pub, theyre more than happy to let you bring food into the pub; theres a sandwich shop round the corner that knocks-out cracking roast beef/pork baps. Very nice. The pub itself isnt anything spectacular to look at, but its a comfortable spot, they have a beer garden and its also within walking distance of the ground; just follow the crowds.

No hint of trouble at all as home and away fans mixed very happily, and Id definitely recommend this as a great little find if youre going up to Hull for the football.
