not quite the local it was, could be a lot worse, but could be a lot better. Food improved, bar staff average to good, manager(ess?) very good, but still not the bastion of happy sunbury drinking it was.

Oh dear!
Is it possible for the (previously) effervescent life and spirit to be vapourised out of a pub SO quickly?
In the case of the lovely Magpie in Sunbury on Thames, I think so!
Three weeks ago ago, this surely ranked among the friendliest, warmest pub in Sunbury.
Granted, the new-ish decour hasn't changed. The river hasn't moved, and, surprisingly, not ALL the regulars have upped-pints since the departure of the very friendly, hospitable managers (Mark, Mandy?). But it 'aint the same.
Since the all too premature deperature of the LOVELY, hospitable couple whom previously ran the place it's become a veritably hollow shell of it's former self. No disrespect to the current temporary manager, who seems like a very friendly fellow, or his bar staff who, once in a while, look pleased to serve you.
However, the general vibe around the place isn't what it was. For this would-be Magpie regular, it's time to look elsewhere.

Mark and his wife have done such a great job making this one of the best pubs in the area. They will be sorely missed. I think I speak on behalf of many punters.

The Flower Pot Hotel, Sunbury on Thames
Although I don't reside in Sunbury I used to enjoy visiting the Flower Pot when i'm with my Sunbury friends given that the Magpie up the road isn't quite what it was. If you want a (very) quiet drink, this is your place. However, seems not to be the friendliest of places of late. Can't put my finger on the vibe. Good selection of beers. Food and hospitality is good, so I'm told; still, there's something missing. Maybe us oldies remember when landlords and landladies made you feel welcome, perhaps im just behind the times. not a bad pub, but certainly consistently under-performing in terms of "atmosphere". and it's very, very quiet.
IMHO. I'm sure others will disagree.
