The Ram, Tidworth

Well observed Tuna.
Three 'One-hit Rolands' all in a row.

27 Feb 2014 11:12

The Kicking Donkey, Brokerswood

Very much closed and boarded up on Sunday 24th November. No notice or indication anywhere of who, what, why, and how etc., etc.
Fingers crossed that this once great destination pub will soon re-open under a new guise.

The Live and Let Live, Guildford

Bravo Slerpist. Hugely entertaining. Four identical posts. Anyone would think that you've been drinking old son.

23 Aug 2013 13:58

The Magpie and Crown, Brentford

Many congratulations.

15 Aug 2013 09:52

The Hope, Carshalton

Just a small piece of constructive crticism for the attention of Uncle Slerpy.
There is no letter 'z' in the word REALISE.

31 Jan 2013 15:33

Trafalgar Tavern, Greenwich

Great post Dolphox, especially the first bit about Sue being INARTICULTE.

9 Aug 2012 09:10

The George, Croydon

Dare I say that I think that the Slerper has become quite entertaining albeit bordering on the manic. Long may the disinformation continue.
Yours,

An underage CHAV !

Red Bar and Lounge, Dorking

I counted 5 Slerpers.
Which one of the five is your favourite ?

22 Mar 2012 11:50

The Plough, Effingham

Slerper,
Have you apologised to Dementer yet as instructed to do so the other day, or are you just going to gloss over your frequent shortcomings, inaccuracies, and abuse and pretend it didn't happen ?

22 Mar 2012 11:33

The Plough, Effingham

My Dad is bigger than both your Dads.

16 Mar 2012 09:28

Black Cock Inn, Blythe Bridge

Perhaps the Gaypostman should make this his new destination pub instead of The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton ! A shame it's not in Welwyn, Herts.

15 Mar 2012 11:35

The Rowbarge Hotel, St Johns

I visited The Rowbarge yesterday evening for the first time since it opened it's doors again following the recent repairations. For all intents and purposes it looks much the same as it ever did both inside and out. Close inspection however will confirm otherwise. Much has changed following the fire but the footprint and overall layout remains roughly the same.
Spitfire and London Pride were still there, a pint of the latter costing me 3.40. A few familiar local faces were evident too and as I left at about 8.00pm the place was starting to come alive. Not sure if a telly is in situ (never used to be) so perhaps the place was filling up with people who didn't want to witness the greatest football team in the history of the universe beat Napoli !!
The car park is still a complete dog's breakfast though ! First impressions score it seven .

15 Mar 2012 11:18

Red Bar and Lounge, Dorking

That's a bit rich Slerpers me old son.
Re-read your 14:39 post very slowly and carefully and then apologise to Dementers.

12 Mar 2012 15:31

The Gribble Inn, Oving

The what beer ?

28 Feb 2012 15:51

The Fox Inn, Bisley

Huge 'Property For Sale' sign now features in the car park.
A strange turn of events must have occured with this place over the last 12 months or so.

28 Feb 2012 13:20

The Foley Arms, Claygate

A classic Youngs boozer that is about to close !
Friday 27th January 2012 will see the Foley call last orders for the final time. Tragic.
It will allegedly be redeveloped into an hotel with a licensed bar open to non-residents.

25 Jan 2012 11:05

The Manor Arms, Streatham

Why is this and only half a dozen other pubs on a continuous loop under the BITE heading of 'Random pub of the day' ???
Will the BITE admin. dept. please do something about it . . . NOW !

18 Jan 2012 14:15

The Crown Inn, Knaphill

Had a stonking good laugh in The Crown last night. Bolted about 6 pints (on a school night !) of the Black Sheep which, by pint no. 4, one could tell was on it's way. I was one of several customers who eventually saw it off for it to only to be replaced by a tub of Piddle (4.1%) fresh out of Dorset.
This outlet seems to be heading in the right direction since the grand re-opening back in February last year. Though not especially busy last night, I have witnessed it much busier in recent months as I have passed by with the dog. Perhaps the regulars had been tipped off that I was approaching on foot without the dog !
It is currently promoting an up-coming Valentines night extravaganza and urges early bookings. Have a perusal of The Crowns web-site where I'm sure there must be greater detail.
** If The ladhimself reads this - I'd be happy to buy him a pint of Piddle should he ever find himself in leafy Surrey **

13 Jan 2012 13:24

The Wall Tavern, Whitstable

I would imagine that the poor Lad is gutted.

5 Jan 2012 13:53

The Plough, Coldharbour

Back in 1997 there were two very good reasons for visiting this pub.
She no longer works there sadly.

5 Jan 2012 12:18

Red Lion, Lacock

Plenty of folk sat outside of this place on Sunday just gone. The end of November and a good Al Fresco vibe.
We arrived there all of a fluster at noon - me and Doris Mitchell - having not booked for lunch. I posed the question about availablilty of space for two for lunch and was rewarded by a very courteous lady who accomodated us both nicely. It was, afterall, Doris's special birthday treat. I negotiated three of the four Wadworth offerings whilst Doris caressed a goldfish bowl full of maison rougio. It's beginning to hurt these days - handing over between 6 and 10 for two drinks each time one pays a visit to the bar. It won't stop us though will it ?
The beers were all served acceptably and the lunch itself was delightful - (though Doris did insist on a starter which irked me somewhat). As a previous contributor suggested, the portions could have been a little more generous.
We then hot-footed it home stopping off for a cleansing ale on the way at The Pig & Whistle, Melksham. Happy Birthday Doris.

The Star Inn, Woking

I stupidly dropped by here last evening after running the gauntlet of Woking's Peacock Centre. Upon entering there were just two characters sat at the bar. I soon realised that they were both a couple of meat-heads. They would have made greater sense if they had attempted sign language instead of trying to speak.
I opted for a pint of Black Sheep. The pleasant enough fellow tending bar then experienced the spluttering cough from the pump which signalled the end of the line for that particular barrel. Obviously I then opted for the only other alternative - Doom Bar. Instead of selecting a clean glass y'man hovered the glass full of foam and detritis from the failed attempt at Black Sheep under the pump. I said nowt. 3 later my pint was presented before me albeit with an extremely deep and frothy head. I calculated that what I had there was about 30 pence worth of foam. I said nowt.
Meanwhile along the bar to my right the two bozos had become both animated and loud whilst someone they knew was attempting a telephone conversation with his finger in his ear on the landline behind the bar. The F word happened along with the C word courtesey of the brothers GRIM without any response whatsoever from the (acting ?) management who, like me, could not have failed to hear. The person making the call was not amused when he finished and pointed out his displeasure to the two remedials (whom he clearly knew).
Memo to the Management : You need to reprimand idiots who make the prospect of a quick, quiet pint an unpleasant experience for normal people like me. You will see from my two previous posts that I have been associated with this pub on and off for nigh on 32 years now. It's a pity, but along with a low rating I also send out a strong and clear message that, for now at least, you can shove your dreadful pub squarely up your arse.

25 Nov 2011 11:26

The Bear, Melksham

Soon to be a Spoons.

11 Nov 2011 16:19

The Seaview, East Preston

Had occasion to attend a wake here earlier this week. At least 5 million people rammed into what is quite a small hostelry. They did us proud, very proud indeed. Because I was in charge of the car keys I only had a half of IPA and as IPA goes it was . . . well, a half of IPA.
The buffet laid on by the pub was very well presented indeed. Do you know what ? We were even treated to Spam fritters ! Spam fritters just like the spam fritters served up at school all those years ago. Delicious. That taste took me back. It is doubtful that I will ever return to The Seaview and even if I do I bet they won't be serving Spam fitters. Spam fritters in the evening dot com, now there's an idea . . .

Sinclairs Oyster Bar, Manchester

1.97 a pint ?
I'm beginning to think that it is not as grim up north as us soft southern shandy-drinking, ballet dancing basstads are lead to believe !
1.97 a pint indeed.
I'm on the next stagecoach north !

The Nell Gwynne, Covent Garden

I'm a neutral !
I have never visited The Nell Gwynne nor am I very likely to given that I'm a carrot-crunching big-eared in-bred living way out west with only a lame mule for transport.
I have read and re-read the last few posts and felt compelled to show support for the standpoint and equally fair comments displayed by the manager - nellgwynne - as far as the little dispute herein is concerned. As he says, why should he not be allowed to defend an 'attack'.

Q: If the mule makes a miraculous recovery and I one day make myself known to you, can I have a free pint please ?

19 Aug 2011 15:45

The Goldsworth Arms, Woking

More 'Shit Hole' than 'Watering Hole'.

3 Jun 2011 12:06

The Fox Inn, Bisley

I noticed three or four weeks ago that The Fox was not only closed but thoroughly boarded up - doors, windows etc. It looked terminal.
Imagine my surprise last night (02.06.2011) when I witnessed a full car park and customers spilling out onto the patio ! There was music and possibly a BBQ on the go. I was walking the dog without so much as a penny in my pocket otherwise I would have steered the dog pubward for a gander. I will get myself along there in the next week or two and report back with the low-down.

3 Jun 2011 11:55

The Royal Oak, Pirbright

Rambling pub with very capable staff. The trouble is (was) that the place was under-staffed. On a sunny Saturday in mid-March you would not expect to wait forever for your food -excellent though it was when it eventually arrived. If I were a landlord I would aim to anticipate a rush and perhaps have one or two members of off duty staff on standby at the end of the phone. It must be a difficult thing to 'odds', but a little forethought might help ease the situation that we found ourselves in.
One table of 4/5 left immediately when told that food would be 45 to 60 minutes. Wouldn't you ? The garden was heaving too which compounded the situation two-fold. You have to feel sorry for young (student ?) bar persons under pressure through no fault of their own.
As I said, an excellent pub staffed by great people. The icing on the cake for me was three very well kept pints of Hog's Back T.E.A.

29 Mar 2011 14:39

The Pig and Whistle, Melksham

Frequently alternates it's guest beers. Currently serving Bombardier and a very good pint of draught Bass - which clearly travels well.
Shame about the thumping great scroll-down TV projector screen. It's an old argument, but pubs used to be about beer, bar billiards, arrows, and above all conversation. If people coming into the trade were a little more aware of what many punters would really prefer - life would be perfect !

2 Mar 2010 16:19

Broads Haven Tavern, Potter Heigham

Yes. This is one 10 minute walk that you will never regret. Leaving the Broadshaven Tavern behind, steer your way past Lathams, heading north and you will soon encounter The Falgate (Arms ?)

20 Jan 2010 14:18

The Queens Head, Devizes

I very nearly had an orgasm in this pub, the beer was so good !

11 Dec 2009 15:36

The Crown Inn, Ludgershall

There is only one way to settle this (albeit very long running) dispute. As Harry Hill would say, "FIGHT "!
I have occasion to pass through Ludgershall two or three times a week on my commute to and from home.
In the coming weeks I shall sample both boozers and report back to this site for a completetly unbiased appraisal of each establishment. I suspect this won't happen until the new year. Adios.

11 Dec 2009 15:34

The British Lion, Devizes

Dived into The British Lion recently whilst Christmas shopping. Realised at that moment that no more shopping would be possible !
A great place. I can only echo or ditto all that has been written before my humble contribution.
Do you suppose that one day all boozers will go full circle and be back to the excellent standard experienced in The British Lion ?
The barmaid wasn't naked so I can only award it 9 out of 10.

9 Dec 2009 13:53

Bell Inn, Lacock

Having just moved to the area recently I eventually got around to visiting this establishment yesterday - 25.10.2009. It was about 4.00pm and the place looked and felt as though it had enjoyed a good lunchtime sesh with a few stragglers still kicking about. My initial impression is that The Bell, like so many boozers these days, has an emphasis on food. Forgive me if I am wrong. The menu looked great. Why shouldn't the emphasis be on food ? Given the choice of feeding a party of six or concentrating your efforts on making sure the old saddo at the bar (me) gets what he's after you too would entertain and cater for the majority. That said, the pumps boasted a real cider, Palmers Best Bitter, Bath Ale Best, a deliciously dark looking Porter (you wouldn't want to find a light Porter I suppose) and one other which for the life of me I can't remember. Needless to say I will be returning and will report back to this site accordingly. I was there for 30 minutes only but have no hesitation in awarding my experience 8 out of 10. Thanks to The Bell Inn - see you again soon.

26 Oct 2009 16:01

New Inn, Horning

Have been visiting the broads annually since 1987 with this year being no exception. For the first time in the last 22 years we visited The New Inn (on September 8th - possibly at the same time as SWRIGHT below) and I can only echo SWRIGHTs comments by offering this establishment the almighty thumbs up. Much investment has taken place (apparently) by Gus the new man at the helm. Both beer (Woodfordes Wherry) and food (Cromer crab sarnie) were of the highest standard. To round things off nicely we spotted an otter as we left by boat !
Keep up the grand work Gus - that's what I say.

17 Sep 2009 16:17

The Notter Bridge Inn, Saltash

Had occasion to be staying nearby recently for three nights. Used this establishment on all three evenings. Why try elsewhere when the initial experience is above average ? Extensive menu, Courage Best (which clearly travels well) and upon discovering that they did not sell cigarette papers was duly rewarded with a brand new pack of Rizzlas direct from the bottom of the barmaid's handbag. Apparently under new management The Notter bridge Inn will be re-visited when I am next in that neck of the woods. My colleague and I referred to it as the Notter Pub which gave rise to hilarious conversations akin to Abbot & Costello's 'Who's on first base' sketch. Oh how we both laughed. A good job, well done to all of those concerned especially Mr Chef and the lady with the fag papers. Many thanks.

5 May 2009 14:31

The Star Inn, Woking

Visited these premises again during the Christmas break and can confirm that it has gone to hell in a hand-cart.
Stinkingly bad pint and not another soul in evidence. It is closing for a fortnight early-on this year for a full re-furb. This will be it's umpteenth re-furb in the last 20 years or so. Upon re-opening the emphasis is going to be on food (apparently). If you ask me (and you don't) greater emphasis is required on concentrating on producing a decent pint. If I had wanted vinegar I would have gone to Sainsburys.

7 Jan 2009 14:46

The Star Inn, Woking

I began my drinking career in this fine establishment in about 1980 - back in those heady days when Mr Smith was at the helm (abley assisted by Mr C). Since then I've certainly witnessed some ups and downs, though thankfully more 'ups' than 'downs'.
For many years The Star used to field a very strong team in the annual Woking Bikeathon and as such raised an awful lot of money for The Leukaemia Research Fund.
Today Mick and Barbara are re-establishing this premise back to (hopefully) what it used to be. YES - real ale. YES - fine fayre. YES - ambient and stimulating surroundings.
Will up-date with more info after my next visit.
