Very good pub! Real ales were terrific, friendly barstaff (knowledgable for young 'uns!) and a 'proper pub' feel to it. Prices a bit on the high side, but well worth it.

Nice place, didn't have any food but the beer was decent and the interior suitably 'seasidey'. Small but perfectly formed!

A bit of a strange, old-fashioned pub but none the worse for it. Sign said 'under new management', and it shows: clean interior, some quirky touches in the furnishings and a comfortable, warm feeling to the place. Good jukebox kept at a nice low level, five handpulls (only three on though, but the beer was excellent. Friendly barstaff, even made a coffee for one of our party who was done with alcohol for the day.

Come a long way since it was The Black Swan, but not a good way. Are these a Whitley lot? Pint was average, pub was okay for a chain pub.

The Queens Head Hotel, Alnwick
Spotless clean but not much in the way of real ale, had to leave as television was blaring an 80s music channel.

Two handpulls on, only tried one and the beer was not well kept. Seemed more set-up for food so only stayed for the one. About average?

Good, good pub. Very well-kept real ales (I counted six handpulls but only three on), draught Hoegaarden, a whole raft of bottled Belgian beers and more single malts than you could wish for. The interior was a bit out-dated and 'club'-like, but still once you find this pub you might not want to leave. Also very knowleadgble barstaff, very enthusiastic about what they're selling and more than willing to chat. Nice little outside area to one side as well.

Old-fashioned, a bit grungy and not afraid to be uncool - so my kind of place! Good beer, free coffee refills, impromptu live music sessions, a nice little upstairs venue. I would say something like 'could do with a lick of paint', but too many pubs in Newcastle have ruined themselves in the past few years by doing just that. Stay as you are, Cumberland Arms!

Great pub, decent beer, good free jukebox and a great outside venue for live music (the arch of the Glasshouse Bridge really does the acoustics justice). Often busy but for good reason!

This was crowded and not much in the way of 'proper' beer, but I couldn't help but like this place. It was trendy without want to be 'lux', quirky and with a decent outside area. Ordered a cocktail, enjoyed the environs and moved along - was well worth the stop.

A lovely atmosphere, bohemian crowd and good beer. Have had food here a couple of times and it has been a bit variable in quality, but is cheap and decent on the whole. The Cluny seems to have had a lot of thought put in to the running of it, with a dedication to doing things properly (the off-sales concept for real ales is particularly good). Also possibly the best live music venue in town!

The Best pub in Newcastle? If you like good real ale and a quirky/interesting place to drink it then this has to be in with a shout. Long 'magazine'-style pub, well done out and very well kept, good local real ales and an old-fashioned record player on the bar with some decent music on rotation. Unusual, atmospheric, different and not had the heart & soul torn out of it like so many others in town. A treasure!

Tilleys Bar, Newcastle
Excellent selection of real ales and other , good interior (a bit dark for people who need glasses though), barstaff who really know their stuff and attracts a fairly relaxed, friendly crowd. Unless they have a DJ in, the music and atmosphere are great.
