The Blue Posts, Soho

On the surface it has a nice 'boozer' feel to it, but with only two ales on tap and a preponderance of bland lager-type choices I find myself a tad disappointed. One to pass by - Soho has better to offer than this.

The Blackfriar, Blackfriars

Went on a Sunday when it was quiet and enjoyed the Timothy Taylor. A proud part of our pub heritage thankfully preserved, and delightfully out of place with it's concrete surroundings. A good range of European as well as home grown beers.

The Jolly Gardeners, Vauxhall

The range of German beer is wide and well kept. A little gem of a pub! No Augustiner though (A personal fave!) No German beer enthusiast should pass through this part of town without dropping in. Will definetely be back.

Edwards Bar, Hammersmith

Went here spontaneously one Saturday night recently. A disappointingly pedestrian range of beers but quick service, surprisingly good mix of music and an friendly atmosphere with not too much overcrowding. - we were intending to just pass through but ended up staying the whole night. A bolder range of beer and this pub could be really good!

The Druids Arms, Maidstone

In a good location for people watching and lacking in pretence. A few to many mass produced lagers for my tastes, nevertheless a good atmos, and you could do a lot worse in Maidstone town centre. A tweak in the quanity and quality of ales on offer and this could be an excellent little boozer...

Ye Olde Swiss Cottage, Swiss Cottage

Samuel Smiths pubs are usually pretty good, Ye Olde Swiss Cottage, however is something of an enigma. Resoundingly 'local', it is dimly lit and the overpowering stench of cheap tobacco throughout gives it a decidedly unfriendly buzz. Maybe it's because of its isolated location in the middle of two main roads or its comparative distance from the hub of activity that is the O2 centre, but it feels out of touch and looks poorly maintained. Great potential, but needs a lot of TLC.

The Slug and Lettuce, Soho

How this bland chain pub manages to be full night after night is beyond me. Inadequate numbers of bar staff and an thoroughly indifferent attitude to beercraft mean a long wait followed by a dissapointing pint is guaranteed for all. It saddens me to think that all the money the slugs' unfortunate punters cough up day after day clearly goes to line the pockets of a careless and grasping strata of middle managers rather than on delivering a good service and providing value for money. How people are happy to settle for this dire excuse of a pub is utterly beyond me. Frankly I fear for our heritage.

The Nellie Dean of Soho, Soho

Unpretentious pubs are an increasing rarity in the W1 area, so it's good to see this friendly Soho boozer still going strong. A welcoming atmosphere, tons of character and well kept Deuchars makes the Nellie THE pub of choice in the Wardour st/Dean st vicinity. Good people watching in the summer.

The Viaduct, Hanwell

A solid Fullers pub. Friendly staff, welcoming atmosphere, good food and well kept ale. Lets see more pubs of this calibre in the Hanwell area!

The White Horse, Bearsted Green

Sterile, souless and uninviting. Unwelcoming bar staff, an unremarkable selection of beers and a stuffy, overpriced menu. This is a prime example of what a village pub should NOT be. Oh, and watch your head if you are anywhere near 6ft tall; the profusion of wooden timber ceiling beams (a lackluster attempt at 'olde worlde' charm) are dangerously low hanging and very painful! What a disgrace. The sooner we see the back of snobby, unsympathetic chain pubs such as this the better. Avoid.
